rewatching trollhunters
The villains/antagonists in trollhunters represent the different ways depression manifests when your a teen. Like almost every single villain. Even in filler.
Strickler? Feeling hopeless in school, like you can never meet your goals and how easy it can be to slip into a fixed mindset. You never feel like your doing enough in school despite trying you best your mind always finds something to feel inadequate in.
Angor Rot? The feeling of emptiness that many often describe as the focal point of depression. Theres an inescapable darkness that looms in the shadows and seems to hollow you out from the inside.
Nomura? Feeling like you’re too small or weak to handle the real world, feeling like a little gynt who has no shot at actually making it.
Gunmar? The helpless and looking threat of suicidal ideation. People think depression makes you crave death and want to die, but you’re terrified of it, you desperately want to live, to survive. But you don’t know how, you’re drowning in darkness and you don’t know what lies ahead. Gunmar is the feeling like death is the only path for you. (The decimar blade makes this even more clear with how it controls people, convincing them that Gunmar’s way is the only way.)
Fuck it even the FUCKING GNOMES represent how even the little slights of the world can feel like an insistent and constant force, piling up until you’re overwhelmed.
Changelings can represent how you feel like the people around you are lying to you, trying to be nice and kind while secretly hating you and waiting to drop you at a moments notice.
Bular is very much like gunmar in his representation but Bular is the feeling of how things would better if you died, the people around you would be better, how now matter what you do you’ll never be enough. He’s the more pressing threat of death. He’s the aggressive death, while Gunmar is more calm, passive, convincing.
I see your "troll Jim looks like Blinky" and I raise you: troll Jim with Blinky's colors, Aaarrrgghh's fur, and Draal's horns and crystals
