Stupid one shot that does not pertain to the au at all. Thanks to @daylightisminetoconsume 's latest chapter of their amazing fic 31 Days in the dark lands, I've been thinking about Stricklander, Barbara, and Gunmar. I won't explain the thought pipeline exactly but know it resulted in stricklakemar. (Art at the end)
The changeling looked up from his hands and over his shoulder at the low rumble of his name. Gunmar's lone eye peered at him. Only the gumm-gumm king could manage to look unimpressed and concerned all at once.
"I thought you were asleep," Stricklander frowned.
"I was," Gunmar hummed, "your anxiety woke me."
Stricklander's frown deepened, a prickle of unease flaring up; an old reaction to having his emotions sniffed out by a troll.
"Relax," Gunmar rumbled, lingering on the word invitingly, as if to appeal Strickler into following the soft command.
"I am relaxed," he huffed, looking down to where Barbara was curled up into his side. "I was merely thinking."
Gunmar was quick to call his bluff. "Your thoughts are loud, Stricklander. You're working yourself up," he noted. His gaze followed Strickler's and lingered for a moment.
Strickler sighed and leaned his head against Gunmar's flank, staring up at the ceiling for a long while. So much has happened over the years, he can't help but feel like it would all fall apart, as so many things in his life did. The way he saw it, his worry was completely warranted. He was waiting for the day this dream would shatter, the day Barbara would realize all the reasons she should hate him and Gunmar would toss him aside.
The troll in question growled lowly, pulling Stricklander out of his train of thought and making Barbara stir.
"What will put your mind at ease" Gunmar asked in exasperation, curling closer around the two to huff at Strickler more directly.
"Don't wake her," Strickler huffed right back, deflecting.
That lone eye rolled. "You will do that yourself if you continue wallowing. Barbara may not have my nose, but her intuition serves her, even in sleep."
He was right, of course, but that was besides the point.
Gunmar spoke again before he could say as much, "You are safe, your human is safe. There is not a threat to be had, and the trollhunters are with Aarghaumont and his mate. What is there to fret over?"
Strickler sighed and shook his head, "First of all, I've told you time and again not to call Barbara 'my human'. The way you say it feels as though I own her, and I don't."
"She is yours nonetheless, similarly to how you are mine. I don't seek to take your autonomy, just as you do not seek to take hers."
"We're in a relationship, shouldn't we each belong to each other then?" He said with an eye roll.
"Should we, or do we?" Gunmar drawled.
Strickler paused, furrowing his brows. "...Why don't we?"
"Barbara and I do not share the same care for each other as we do for you," Gunmar began, straight to the point. "I respect her... I'm fond of her, even, but there would be nothing between us besides that if not for you. We belong to you, but not each other. She shares my sentiments."
"Oh, yes, that makes me feel so much better! The basis of my most loving relationship is their affection for me," Stricklander growled.
"You say that like it's a bad thing. Barbara and I don't have to be in love with each other to love you."
Stricklander opened his mouth to speak but then closed it again with a sharp click, turning to blink at Gunmar.
It was Gunmar's turn to roll his eye. "The most clever changeling I have ever met, and yet you can be so moronic."
He was cut off by a sleepy sounding, "Walt...?"
He shot Gunmar a scowl. The ex warlord didn't look even the slightest bit apologetic. "It seems our mate is determined to circle himself into an anxious fit," he reported.
"I am not having a fit. I am reflecting!"
"Spiraling," Barbara corrected, right already and she didn't even know what was going on.
"I do not appreciate being ganged up on," the changeling grumbled, even as the tightness in his chest unraveled. The knot that had been forming over the past for days had loosened at what Gunmar had said, but the easy banter easily detangled it completely.
Barbara smiled and lifted her head to look up at him, "Then stop making us gang up on you."
Gunmar chuckled at that and shifted on the giant 12 foot family sized mattress Stricklander spent an entire month trying to acquire.(Finding a bed large enough to fit a 10 ton troll was no easy feat, though a worthwhile one) Strickler squawked as he and Barbara were pulled into his lap and Gunmar rested his jaw atop Strickler's head.
Barbara hummed happily, completely unbothered, and pressed her head under his own jaw.
Trapped between two of the people he'd come to love most in this world. He didn't know what to do with himself-not that he could do much anyway-so he resorted to pouting.
"Sleep," Gunmar instructed, his voice vibrating through the two of them this close.
Well... who was Stricklander to argue?
