I feel the need to emphasize, how deep Apollo's betrayel of Commodus went.

On the surface, they dated, Apollo left without a word and then later killed him. However.

Apollo and Commodus were romantically involved while Commodus was an impressionable teenager. Apollo completely indulged and supported his character, giving Commodus no reason to doubt their relationship or himself. Then Commodus father dies. Apollo offers him the unrestricted support of a deity. Not just the "I will support you" of a partner, "You will always have my blessings". Then he leaves, either on the same day or shortly after.

Commodus did not have a good relationship with Marcus Aurelius, but that's just nasty.

Commodus asked Apollo for advice, he was 18, Apollo was an immense source of validation to him. While I personally don't see a major issue in the technical age gap, based on how the gods are rather disconnected from human age implications, Apollo asolutely was in a power position. He had immense influence on a young mortal teen he did not seem aware of and did not use responsibly. He was not obligated to fix anyone, but he would have owed Commodus honesty.

Then years of silence, Commodus survives several assassination attempts with the firm believe that a literal god is on his side. Apollo comes back into Commodus' life as Narcissus and quickly becomes his most trusted person AGAIN! He's his wrestling coach, they engage in potentially deadly, close-quarter activity together, Narcissus frequently bathes the emperor. This is a "king tells his barber his most guarded secrets, because that person has a knife at his throat every day" situation.

And after another assassination attempt from two close figures in Commodus' life (his lover and his chamberlain) just failed, Narcissus reveals he was Apollo all along, he snuck back into Commodus life, he didn't disclose his identity, now he kills him.

Apollo did not just leave Commodus and then begrudgingly ended his reign after their relationship was long over. He repeatedly made it a point to become the very closest person in his life, the one he trusts the most, bathed him in a false sense of safety and promises, and then, also repeatedly, betrays that trust in the most brutal way imaginable.

Copollo Hot take/Headcanon

Commodus didn't actually care about Apollo's past lovers.

A general assumption seems to be, that he was this super jealous, possessive lover, who would feel surges of insignificance and hurt pride, when reminded that Apollo had other lovers before him (and potentially after him in the present).

I can see why, but it doesn't fit my personal image of both his character and the nature of their relationship from Commodus perspective. I believe his pride and the sense of superiority he drew specifically from their entanglement, was not of the nature of wanting to be the only one in Apollo's life ever, or completely possess him – I think it was much more understanding of the nature of a god.

I see Commodus as believing, he is capable of understanding the way an immortal, devine being loves, because he sees himself as very close to that nature and therefore would completely go along with the idea of not being "the only".

Of course not. Apollo is a god, why should he be expected to only ever give his favour to ONE mortal in a sea of mortals to choose from and over a time period of literal millenia? Emperors are much the same. I think Commodus would revel exactly in this perceived understanding, like an inside joke he shares with a god. He isn't jealous, of course he isn't jealous, he GETS it, unlike the small-minded lowlifes beneath both him and Apollo, who would resume to such ridiculous, archaic emotions and hence assume them of others.

But he isn't like them. He is Not Like The Other Girls! Because he was chosen by a god, who only ever shines his light on a few selected special people. He seems to be a very present focussed person, judging by his craving for short-term satisfaction over meticulous planning and his disdain for considering consequenses. Who cares if there were others, because Apollo is with him RIGHT NOW and that means he is the only one in the whole world at that moment, who gets this sort of attention. Like a child with a special toy. Doesn't matter if another kid used to play with it yesterday, because he has it now and gets to rub it under your nose.

Which is why the betrayel hurts even more, because that's not another kid using the toy the next day, that's like an adult taking it away from him and boy if you ever took away anything from a child – if you know you know.

I do think his perspective on this might have changed afterwards, but more from a feeling of being replaced or discarded easily, rather than simply jealousy.

Nr. 1 - Justforkix (Asterix and the Vikings 2006 film adaptation)

Ok where do I start with that guy? Perhaps with the fact that he is essentially a pathetic blond guy. Maybe THE most pathetic blond guy - the plot of the film is literally, that he is kidnapped by the vikings, because they believe as the "Champion of fear" he'll be able to teach them how to fly. Also he's the stereotype of a wimpy, arrogant teenager.

He is suave, vain, trendy, considered attractive and carries a sense of self-importance. He is alienated by the rural living situation of the Gauls' village and constantly whines about it - their music is boring, their food way below his health and ethical standarts and their dance moves not up to date. He declares himself a vegetarian and a pacefist as well as being a party-person - total GenZ carricature. He's also not a morning person, but that at least correlates with mortal Apollo/Lester in TOA

My guy arrives in a sports chariot! (in the comic it's specifically from Mediolanum - Milan)

Total party guy

During the village's welcome feast, he storms the stage, summons background disco music out of nowhere and teaches the entire village trendy, lutecian dance moves. Iconic

He generally has a tendency to start dance parties whereever he goes, including the viking village where he is held prisoner

Horatio Felonious Ignacious Crustaceous...

Disney's The Little Mermaid 1989 (and related media)

Sebastian the crab - court musician and composer, runner of illegal underground music clubs, the king's personal advisor, as well as Ariel's confidant and guardian. I think his character generally resonates with the mythological figure of Apollo, being both a party-loving musician and a serious professional. His role at court demands him to be strict and dignified, while his role as an artist makes him fun and outgoing.

The Musician

Sebastian's most prominent role is that of the official court musician and composer at king Triton's court. It's how he is introduced to the audience in on of the film's very first scenes and it keeps on playing an important role throughout the film.

He is shown to take his craft very seriously, as well as being passionate about it and taking great joy and pride in it. Just look at how he goes from immensely dignified and serious, when he prepares to conduct the orchestra, to absolute joy!

This guy lives music.

In fact he studied it, according to a line in the TV series' episode Tale of Two Crabs. He also voices his disdain for Ariel for rarely showing up at rehearsal, even though he praises her voice. He reckognises talent, but has no respect for her slacking off.

Just look at his face here. I know this guy would be one hell of a strict music teacher (he actually reminds me of my own music teacher)

The significance of his role as court musician is elevated by the fact, that the merfolk in The Little Mermaid is very musical by nature. This was confirmed by the crab himself in musical number Under the Sea, where all the sea creatures are said and shown to be musically talented and joyful and also further established in later additions to the Little Mermaid canon like the TV Series and the 2008 Prequel film Ariel's Beginning. There, after king Triton banned all music following his wife's death, Sebastian leads an underground music club called The Catfish Club Band, while on surface acting like a strict enforcer of the King's rules. So he's actually a good actor as well.

He's also a total stage baby!

Music is his number one talent and strategy. His job? Music Need to convince someone in an argument? Music That darn boy just won't kiss the girl? You guessed it

So it's clear Sebastian's a very talented and passionate musician, he brings music into everything and it's his main way of dealing with problems, like when he has the entire group of sea creatures, that happen to be present, break into a song explaining why Ariel should forget about the human world. Literally the entire point of Under the Sea is: "Sea has dope music, everyone can sing and dance and you don't have to work and can jam all day - stay here!"

Atlantica is a musical paradise. What do humans got, a lot of sand? Well Sebastian's got a hot crustician band and he's not afraid to use it

He enjoys music, but he goes about it in a very structured and precise way. Like Apollo he's all about harmony and perfection unlike say Dionysus or Marsyas, who's approach to music in myth gets portrayed as unrestrained, chaotic and maddening.

In order to make Eric and Ariel kiss he arranges a song, while also making a point of doing a better job than scuttle.

When Sebastian has a task to accomplish, he breaks into song and and he can't help but be a little bit of a showoff about it. He's the #1 wingman just like our boy. Average is below him. He doesn't just provide music, he makes a whole show out of it and boy does he go all out!

The king's advisor - The princess's guardian

Aside from being the court musician, Sebastian is also king Triton's personal advisor (not explicitely stated in the original film, referred to as such several times in the TV series). The film implies his closeness to the king, as he rides in his chariot alongside him in the opener and it is him, Triton confides in for parental advise. He trusts Sebastian enough to task him with supervising his youngest daughter. Sebastian knows his status and revells in it, but also gets caught up in ego a little. He is the confidant of a seemingly all-mighty, moody, god-like ruler and he butters up to him quite a lot in fear of losing his position with the king. It's not just fear of getting obliterated. Sure Triton has temper, but he's never shown actually harming his subjects. And yet Seb tells him to go harder on Ariel, because he thinks, that's what he wants to hear, only to backpaddle in the finale, after this approach proved desastrous.

Still it speaks for Sebastian's character and intellect, that the king trusts him so much. Alongside Athena, Apollo is also stated to be a favourite of Zeus many times. He gets tasked with important, personal matters by the god king, like protecting a wounded Hector in the Illiad for example.

He is Ariel's supervisor, guardian and friend in one role, trying to keep up a strict facade and enforce Triton's will, but ultimately giving in to the puppy eyes. Total Apollo-Hermes dynamic.

And he's just so dramatic!

In the TV series he has a rival/nemesis called "Zeus". Just putting that out here

Horatio Felonious Ignacious Crustaceous Sebastian (who are you, a roman emperor?) has definitely some other themes going on for him. He's prominently jamaican, which majorly influenced the musical style of Under the Sea, his main arc is about choosing his own morality over fear of punishment, or loss of status and he serves as both a guiding figure and friend to Ariel as well as comedic relief, in prominent contrast to chaos bird scuttle. Albeit dramatic artist, he isn't the typical golden boy. His ego is mostly in check and he lacks many of the main traits of TOA Apollo - still I think he shares some major similarities and resonates with mythology Apollo. Perhaps soulmates is a stretch, but they'd definitely be besties and competent colleagues.

What do we stan about Percy Jackson representation-wise? His ADHD? That he is a more laidback and tender character than the genre typical hero archetype? That he's the son of a single parent, who's struggle gets realistically portrayed?

Yes, actually, all of these combined with the fact that he's poor. Not lives-in-the-streets level poor but very demonstrably not rich or even middle class. Sally and Percy live on a tight budged, they live in a small apartment. Sally works a likely low income job at a candy shop, she does not get to complete her education, or work on her book, she does not get a break away from her abusive husband, who drinks their money away.

Percy is directly effected by their financial situation, he actually suffers from poverty and not in a Cinderella or Harry Potter type of way, where the character lives in poverty, but actually suffers from abuse and active withholding of financial means, their families could provide. It also doesn't make Sally bad or abusive, their relationship is very loving and healthy, but it does not take away from the hardships a child would likely be put through under these circumstances, however loving their family might be.

And I love how much Percy STRUGGLES because of it.

Admittedly, a lot of his problems are mostly caused by him being a demi-god and all the mythology shenanigans it gets him into, but ultimately, he lives through experiences many children of impoverished families, who might struggle with neurodivergency or learning disabilities on top of it, live through. Percy switches schools constantly. His mother can't afford expensive tutoring or private schools or special educational programs. When Percy can not keep up with the school's standarts, when he gets into trouble, or his grades are not good enough again, all he and Sally can do is have him pack his things and switch institutions again. He doesn't have the support tools a more financially privileged child might have. He slips through the cracks. And even after the world is saved, Gabe is gone and Sally makes a living writing books, his struggles continue.

The Senior year adventures feature once again Percy getting into mythological high jinks to get into college, because of course it's a demi-god school for demi-god children and he needs a bunch of god's recommendation letters to get in. Once again his problems in canon stem from him being a demi-god and a child of the big three at that, but in meta-text it does read a lot like a kid continuing to struggle with working themselves out of the underclass society has put them in. Unlike Annabeth, who comes from a wealthy and academic household, Percy is the one working his behind off and literally risking his live to get a scholarship from the people, who are responsible for the the situation he is in, by upholding the system by which's rules he's trapped.

I like this. I like this representation and that there isn't an infinite money glitch plotpoint, that whisks Percy and Sally into wealth and luxury. They become financially more stable by the end of PJO, but never do they become rich and I think that is a much more honest ending, than having them become magically wealthy and live on the back of the system that they once suffered under, because they were granted magic superiority by genes, a dungeon full of gold and a mindest to not gaf!

Gods I hate Harry Potter's sociopolitical implications.

Thoughts on "Wrath of the Triple Goddess"

I finally got around to reading/listening to Senior Year Adventures Wrath of the Triple Goddess and these are my thoughts:

I honestly did not like this book until a rather late point in the narrative. Then I did! In parts. What did save it's grace a lot in my eyes, was again the focus on the theme of healthy relationships to one's self and others around us. This was present in Chalice of the Gods with the ultimate message of embracing aging and coming to terms with it, which was a nice thing to tell readers, assuming the audience for these books are mostly people, who grew up on PJO and are now entering, or already into young adulthood, like the gang. The second book has more of a message around listening and understanding each other, even or especially when you are forced to cohabit. That families aren't always easy to handle and even though you should not force yourself to stay in a toxic environment, giving the people around you a little more grace, respecting their autonomy, can make life easier for everyone. I think this was beautifully done in the second narrative arc with Gale. I came to understand this initially kind of annoying, unhinged menace, as a complex and sympathetic character with her own struggles and feelings. Percy and Grover's little ted talk was also sweet. Losing connection to close friends into adulthood is a common issue and anxiety of many people and deserves to be talked about. Nice.

Now what I didn't like. At all.

Percy and Grover

I said I liked their talk and I do, but I absolutely hated, how they both came off in this book. Grover eats some strawberry magic experiment, that makes him grow, destroy the house and causes the animals, they were supposed to watch, to flee. Then he spends the rest of the book in a state between panic attack and self-loathing. He is so worked up about losing the animals, he whines and belittles himself constantly, he is literally inconsolable. I get Grover cares deeply for animals. I get he is a kind and sensitive guy. I get that he was worked up, because of his friends potentially leaving soon. I get that, but he's just a mess! I couldn't stand him a few chapters in and I honestly think it's just not like him. He is sensitive, but not mentally instable, he tends to blame himself quickly, but it makes him work harder. After Thalia he blamed himself for years, but it made him be extra protective over Percy. He showed incredible dedication over his task of finding Pan, finally becomming his successor of sorts. He played a crucial role in the Titan war and later does so in the California outpost in TBM (that takes place after SYA). This guy is literally the MVP in every book he is part of the team! What happened to him?!

Percy in this book is, for a lack of better words, simply pathetic. Idk if Rick felt, like he should lean more into the whimpy loser protagonist trope after TOA, but I don't like it. Not for Percy. I love Apollo/Lester for being allowed to be so incredibly human and awkward, it fits his character and his narrative arch really well and made him entirely different from the previous protagonists of the Riordanverse. But that's the point, that's him, not Percy. I was genuinely confused wether I was reading Percy or Lester at times during Triple Goddess. He makes weirdly belittling comments the entire time, which sometimes don't even make sense. Trying to hold the dog and Hecate's torches, he says he's too physically weak and whimpy and that he should hit the gym more, but he is a trained fighter, having fought against monsters and gods alike, since he was 12 and he's part of his schools swim team. Sure he's not a bodybuilder, but I don't believe you, when you tell me, that guy is physically weak.

Percy pees his pants, when Hecate gives him a freakshow of her three heads. He comments on this twice afterwards. You mean to tell me, the kid, who beat the minotaur at 12, played a major fighting role in two god-scale wars, crossed Tartaros, has seen the true form of Chaos...peed his pants because a goddess got spooky with him? Not to diminish Hecate's creep-factor, but that sounds just a little ridiculous. He also constantly feels the need to remind us, that he has ADHD, like Rick forgot about that a couple of books ago and now needs to tell us all again, that Percy really is still a totes super relatable neurodivergent kid - remember he has ADHD? Just like you guys! Percy has always been chaotic, but never whimpy or pathetic. He told gods off since book one. A book ago he wrestled literal age like Herakles. A few weeks? months? after the Senior Year Adventures he shows up in The Hidden Oracle and is a total badass. He's been through it. He's seen it all and he's not dealing with your olympic bs anymore. Here take a hellhound skydrop and a sword to the head you stupid colossal statue, Percy's had it. Not this Percy though, not the Triple Goddess Percy. I don't know who he is honestly.

On a general note I didn't like the books weird affinity to gross things happening. There's lots of puking, farting, peeing of pants. Unlike TOA it felt like really cheap bathroom humor. Apollo was a pathetic guy, previous god, stuffed in a human body and totally unused to mortal physique and being in life-threatening danger/physical pain. The books did include very human body functions, but it didn't hinge on that. It never made it seem particularily funny. Why does Triple Goddess feel the need to show me these teen soldier characters dealing with the same and going "haha get it? he peed his pants, lol!"

Hecuba (cw: mention of suicide)

I honestly think, she was done horribly. Obviously she is the former queen of Troy, who broke down in hate and despair after the greeks destroyed her city, murdered all her children and took her as a slave. Understandable. In the books she goes on a rampant, terrorising greek restaurants with her army of the dead, until Percy consoles her and makes her return to Hecate by luring her in with a puppy to care for. How sweet. But like - this woman had the most atrocious things one can think of, done to her. She was so utterly broken by the death of her children, the destruction of her home, that she wanted to literally take her own life, until Hecate took pity and transformed her into an immortal hellhound. And she kind of has the mind of a dog too. She has dog instincts, she likes walks, she behaves like an animal most of the time, more so than Gale. Yet when she forces a vision on Percy, he sees Troy and her children and feels all the pain in very human complexity. She still remembers these things vividly after literal millenia, like a human!

Then Percy tells her it's fine, bc Hecate might not be perfect, but hey she at least takes care of Hecuba and they're a family now, wether she likes it or not and also here's a cute puppy, so just quit complaining and get your butt home, dog!

What the hell - Intentional or not, this reads to me, like this person, at her lowest point of literally attempting suicide, was trapped in the body and mind of a dog, forced to relive only her most traumatic memories with human complexity, while not actually having the mental or physical capacity to properly express, or cope with them for thousands of years, her autonomy stolen, treated like a pet, by a goddess, who what? felt kinda bad for her and decided she wasn't allowed to die? But it's fine because Percy gives her a puppy and the goddess is a really good dog mum. Idk it didn't sit right with me.

This is way too long, I didn't mean to make it this long. It also sounds like I really hate the book, which I don't. It had me seriously disappointed at the first half and then genuinely liking the second one. Sally Jackson was great. I rate it 6/10 farting polecats. I liked Chalice of the Gods better. So far I think the Senior Year Adventures are kind of cute though. They're mostly a low-stakes nostalgic callback, with the occasional life-lesson for adolescent readers. It's neat. I had a good time for the most part. I just like sharing my opinion in needlessly drawn out text walls.

The Dark Prophecy Hot Take

Commodus and probably Calypso were the only characters really justified being angry at Apolly and deserving an apology in TDP.

Calypso is mad he was against her release from Ogygia. Valid.

Jo and Emmie were mad at him for potentially forgetting about Georgina, but also for her being maddened by the dark oracle. Ok but even if he was Georgie's father (which I personally don't really believe for reasons), it wasn't his fault she ran off to the cave. Like who are you two getting mad at for bad parenting if it was your child, whom you adopted and took responsibility for, who ran from your house unsupervised, to get crazed by a dangerous, possessed oracle near you, especially since they KNEW Georgie had a fascination with it! Getting angry at Apollo for legit just a possibility of fatherhood, that was not adquately proven is just bad faith argumentation. It kind of gives "I had a dream about you doing bad things, so now I'm mad at you" vibe. What happened to "I'm not judging you, I too did bad things in the past" Jo? T-T

(yeah no I totally still love Emmie and Jo, they're really awesome characters and they were in a very emotional state of intense worry for their child)

Trophonius however, is just the worst. He has absolutely zero reasons to be angry at Apollo. He blames him for letting Agamethus die and having him go through with the horrible and traumatising task of cutting his brother's head off. But this guy is 100% responsible for ending up in this situation. Trophonius was blessed with talent by his godly heritage. He was a talented artist and architect, he was renouned and respected, he was handsome and popular and had it all and he still chose to rob the king, famous for being incredibly paranoid and protective of his wealth, instead. He acted greedy, irresponsible and selfish, dragging his brother into the scheme. What happened to him is pretty much the definition of the karmic justice so often depicted in greek myth and his brother, albeit more of an accomplice than a fully malicious perpetrator, still did go along with the robbery, knowing it was wrong, so his punishment is justified by this narrative as well. Trophonius' punishment was arguably worse than plain death, because he was the more malicious and calculating of the two. He is to blame more.

Apollo does call him out for that once, when Trophonius takes his anger out at Meg, but then goes back to being regretful about what happened and blaming himself. But he was right! Trophonius threw away every good fortune he had for a petty robbery and was faced with the consequences. He basically fucked around and found out and he does not get to pray to his godly daddy to make it better and cry about it, when his wish isn't granted. Yes, Commodus was terrible, arguably more terrible than Trophonius ever was, but with him Apollo at least made a legitimate screw-up. He enabled his violent, entitled behaviour, until he couldn't anymore, then just abandoned him without a word and later came back to quietly get rid of him, like sweeping dirt under the rug, because he was too avoidant to confront his mistakes. Awful as he may have been, Commodus was kind of justified at being angry about that. He wasn't even beyond terrible yet, when Apollo left, just a misguided teen with behavioral issues and it SENDS me, that Apollo acts way more regretful and apologetic about Trophonius?! This bitch commited malicious crime and cried about it, when his father didn't bail him out. Instead he moved on to torturing the minds of countless people including two little girls.

Commodus did all sorts of incredibly horrible things as well and I'm not even trying to defend that, my point is just, that the reason he was so vengeful is sort of understandable and the least Apollo could've done, was owning up to his mistakes in this relationship TO Commodus. Bc he does. Just only for himself. Crying in the bathroom. Later also his friends but never the guy he wronged. It would have made Apollo's redemption arc and journey of self-betterment much more fulfilling, if he would have had a more mature "look I did wrong and I'm sorry, but what you're doing is still inexcusable" approach to the whole issue. Like this, there stands nothing but guilt, betrayel and unspoken feelings between them, where there could have at least been acknowledgement.
