Tony Adams explains why he turned down Man Utd move to stay at Arsenal

Tony Adams had the chance to join Manchester United (Picture: Arsenal FC via Getty Images)It is almost unthinkable, but Tony Adams could have been a Manchester United player in the 90s, but instead turned down an approach from Sir Alex Ferguson to stay at Arsenal. The Gunners legend has recalled the time that Ferguson tried to tempt him away from Highbury to join him at Old Trafford in what would have been a seismic move in English football. Of course Adams stayed put and would go on to win two Premier League titles under Arsene Wenger’s management, to add to the two First Division titles he won in 1989 and 91. The legendary defender does admit he was questioning the path Arsenal were on between those great periods of success, but was convinced to stay and is very glad he did. ‘Alex Ferguson came in for me but I wouldn’t leave and I said to the chairman: “Have we got ambition at the club?”‘ Adams told Sky Sports. The Gabon international has just one year remaining on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium, prompting interest from Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona. The Gunners’ inability to challenge for league titles over the last decade, allied to their delicate financial situation, has seen them lose world-class talents such as Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie. Tony Adams claims Arsenal’s players are ‘ready’ to be beaten (Premier League Productions)Tony Adams has slammed the mentality of Arsenal’s players following their defeat to Brighton and believes Freddie Ljungberg’s men look ‘ready’ to suffer poor results as soon as a game begins. The Gunners slumped to a 2-1 loss at home to Brighton on Thursday evening while the players were booed off the pitch by their own fans at the Emirates Stadium after the final whistle. In a woeful opening 45 minutes for Arsenal, Brighton took the lead through Adam Webster. The Gunners equalised through Alexandre Lacazette during a positive spell in the second half but Brighton scored the winner with 10 minutes remaining via Neal Maupay. And Adams, who spent 14 years as Arsenal’s captain, believes a lack of leaders inside the current dressing room is to blame for the club’s poor run of form. ‘I think they are looking after themselves a little bit too much,’ Adams told Premier League Productions.
