Debut: Virtual Boy Wario Land
The best resolution image I could find for this enemy online was a puny 60x66 PNG file, but that is obviously unacceptable. This enemy is named “Big Blob.” If I go in expecting a Big Blob, then I want to get a big blob. Fortunately, I was able to bring peace to this world. Get a good glimpse, because at the time of writing, this might be the biggest Big Blob on the internet. I won’t stop you from making bigger blobs, though!
So what does Big Blob do? Not very much! It’s just big and blobby, and that’s really it! There is only a single Big Blob in the entire game, and all it does is block a path!
But Big Blob is big and gelatinous and can easily absorb shock damage, even from someone as big as Wario! No matter what you do to Big Blob, you can not defeat it. Only briefly wake it up!
But just because you can’t defeat Big Blob doesn’t mean that no one can! Throughout the level, there are tornado enemies with big ol’ eyes named Tornies that you can ride on top of to cross dangerous pits! Aside from doing that, however, they are able to suck up Big Blob, leaving the entrance open! The wiki classifies Tornies as enemies, but they feel like Weird Mario Allies to me, or at least Weird Mario Entities. Or maybe they are Weird Mario Enemies, but they help Wario because Wario is also a Mario enemy? Blech, this is confusing.
But disregarding all of that, this simply reminds me of one of my favorite things about the Mario universe. We must acknowledge that the Mario universe has an animal that is an immobile, sentient blob of gelatin, and its natural predator is a living tornado with cartoon eyes. The Mario universe is such a weird and silly place, and that, my friends, is why I love it so dearly.
