TS recruited the octokittens to drag Jonny to a tea party!

Jonny is only here because they swarmed him

Well, could've been worse. At least it wasn't like... Tim or Ashes. Like out of anyone it's best that it was the Toy Soldier. Right? ...Are you sure it can even feel love?

(Ooc: this one got long, so I'm chucking a read more in to save on scrolling)

*Jonny sat looking at this ask for some time. He didn't know how to express the fact that it would have been better if it was Tim or Ashes, somehow.*

*If Tim or Ashes had sprung a divorce on him, he would have leapt on the opportunity to have some good old fashioned fun. March on down to a courtroom and baffle the poor mortal fucks, have an improvised shouting match where Jonny makes fun of Tim’s gun collection and Tim insults his snoring and they get so close to tearing each other's throats out right then and there that someone calls for security. Announce more and more ridiculous plot twists until he's somehow ended up secretly married to Ashes' second cousin twice removed, who was committing tax fraud to cover up Ashes' multiple charges of arson, but none of that matters because the real betrayal here, judge, is how they eat their breakfast, he can't handle it any longer so they have to be divorced right now.*

*Because the thing was, they could go put on a show like that, spit vitriol and fire in each other's faces for hours, and Jonny would still be comfortable in the knowledge that the moment they stepped out those doors Ashes would be silently shaking with laughter and Tim would be grinning and they'd tell the story to the others over dinner for weeks.*

*He'd know, without a fucking question, that he could crawl back into Tim's arms that night and tell him that he wanted to fight like that more often, and Tim would roll his stupid eyes and kiss him hard, and they'd both know what each of them meant.*

*He'd had centuries with them. Millennia. And sure, they weren't always together through that time - they did have actual arguments from time to time, they broke up and fought like anyone would over the span of literal eternity. But he knew, deep down, that they would always eventually find their way back together.*

*With the Toy Soldier things were... different.*

*Jonny could admit that he'd not taken well to the wooden man at first. That could be blamed on it having been recruited to replace him for a show, a betrayal by Nastya which he'd gladly spun outward into hatred for the annoyingly chipper bastard that lasted him through the next few centuries. He couldn't recall how many times hed tried to permanently lose the thing, "accidentally" leaving it behind on planets or locking it outside of performances.*

*It took many lifetimes for him to recognise how much he actually enjoyed fighting by its side, and many more for him to deign to show it. It was, in comparison to their long lives, only recently that they'd started to be what most would call friendly.*

*Things between them still felt... he wasn't going to say fragile, because he hated that word in relation to himself, but malleable. Like he was only one misplaced word away from breaking the bond they had built up, because Jonny D'Ville was many things but he'd never been kind to the things he loved.*

*And he did love it. He ached for it in the same place in his chest where he held all of them, where he tucked away the desperate possessive cloying adoration that he felt every single time he looked at any of his crew. And as much as the Toy Soldier claimed to only pretend to feel things, he'd been pretty damn certain that it loved him back.*

*He'd been surprised that it had picked him to marry, and maybe if he was smarter he would have questioned it. But somewhere in his chest had lodged itself that most insidious hope that maybe, just maybe, embroidery and polish and gunfights had managed to mend the dogshit way he had treated it for so long. So he hadn't questioned it, and now he only had himself to blame.*

*He was sure the Soldier felt love. He was now equally sure that he wasn't among those it felt it for, not truly.*

*He stared at the ask a while longer, unsure and unwilling to put any of this into words. Finally he replied.*

It can, and it isn't. But at least now I know.

Toycaptain is fun for many reasons, but one of my personal favorites is Nastya finding out and Jonny watching in horror as all his billions of years of making fun of her for fucking the ship crumble away because now she can return the favor

Ts doesn’t love, it pretends to but that’s it. Jonny doesn’t try make it love, just accepts it and continues on.

Jonny doubts his ability to love but he doesn’t have to love it, doesn’t have the pressure of trying to love the “right” way.

Thinking about Jonny going to his death, rattling off random thoughts as his execution is prepared. Thinking about the soldier being there, perhaps even the guardsman tasked with actually taking his head. Thinking about one of the random barely thought through things he said being something along the lines of “the feather looks good on ya, ya know” probably followed by some insult in a way to skirt the small amount of venerableness.
