TPN Theory - What’s the Reward?

Hello internet, welcome to film theory manga theory episode 1, a maybe-series where I make lots of wrong theories about TPN. I’m here to give a theory on the true reward that He (or as some call it, The One) asked from Emma.

I was super disappointed with chapter 178, with how Shirai revealed the reward (or the lack of it) to the readers and the rest of the kids. This was a crucial cliffhanger that got us waiting eagerly for a few weeks back in July, and I’m sure many people can’t be satisfied with a “there was no reward” exception. So either Emma is lying to everyone or Shirai has given up. I refuse to believe the latter so it’s probably the former.

Allow me to present my theory - it’s what I call the Deathly Hallows/Black Butler theory. Not catchy, I know, but there is a possibility that TPN is pulling something similar.

What do I mean by Deathly Hallows? Well, if you’ve seen/watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, you would know that there’s a children’s story called ‘The Three Brothers’. I won’t go into much detail since I forgot the story, but it ended with the last brother accepting Death with a smile on his face when he stopped hiding in his invisibility cloak. It could be that the reward that The One asked for was Emma since he wants the highest quality meat. But since He also promised Emma to go to the human world, He has to wait until Emma dies to take her body, and Emma “greets Him with a smile on her face”.

The other half of my theory is the Black Butler theory, which is also very similar to the previous one. In Black Butler, Sebastian the demon made a deal with Ciel that he would be Ciel’s obedient ’dog’ until their contract was up, and Sebastian would then eat Ciel’s soul. This whole theme of contracts and deals is pretty common in these fantasy mangas. If we apply that logic to TPN, the contract/deal/promise could possibly be that The One grants Emma the chance to live in the human world with her family, but her body/soul will belong to Him once her time on earth is up.

I’m not sure if I’m overanalyzing, but this makes a lot of sense to me, I would love to hear others’ thoughts on this too.

I have doubts with how everything is going so smoothly. I feel like either Emma is saying stuff to hide what the actual promise is, or maybe there's something wrong with the outside world.

I'm sure there's definitely a catch somewhere.

...that's it? Really?

That was strangely anticlimactic and I have doubts. First off, in that second to the last frame, I see Phil, Ray, Norman, an ambiguous hand, someone who is most likely Don, and someone who is either Anna or one of the younger children, but I don't see Emma.

Where is she? I'm not entirely sure I want her to have lied about the reward. This is gonna be a long wait...

So, what’s the catch? Well, I have a theory!

These are Mujika’s thoughts, not Emma’s. Look at her sad smile. Mujika won’t forget her, but what if the reward is Emma’s memories? What if she forgets everything? What if everyone forgets everything? Or maybe what’s-his-name took Emma’s family away from her by wiping their memories, leaving only Emma’s in place? That would certainly hurt Emma, and I could imagine her keeping it to herself in order to protect everyone.

Waiting the next chapter with terror here...

What’s no reward au?

It's one of the more popular TPN fandom AUs where the demon god doesn't require a reward from Emma or any of the other cattle children in order to forge a new promise, so Emma retains all her memories of the demon world when she crosses over to the human world.

So basically this scene from chapter 178 played straight. Some people might consider any scenario where Emma still gives something up but retains her memories as part of this AU if it isn't anything major that upsets the status quo of her remaining with her family, like say, her being required to stay in the demon world.

They're among my favorites because I find it interesting how fans engage with transformative fandom and at what point it becomes too far removed from the source material that it ceases to be engaging for a person.

Some people are strict canon purists and feel removing the reward cheapens the weight of the story. Others thought Emma losing her memories was cheap in and of itself because of how rushed the last arc was (the human world arc, chapters 179 to 181, more on that here) or they prefer exploring certain types of character interactions over maintaining themes when considering what happens beyond the ending, so Emma not losing her memories or regaining them all at some point either isn't a deal breaker for them or perhaps is more interesting. Lots of possibilities when everyone has their own unique limits and hills they die on.
