The View Behind the Glass

Lukey wonders why anybody would want to be behind the glass, to be within the confines of the test tube. It's quite boring.

Day 12 of the Lukey Subathon Writing Challenge! Tbh I have two other stories in the drafts- this one decided to come out on it's own. I miss tr!Lukey......

Nobody tells you how boring it is. How it feels to be the subject within the test tube in which the Black Robes study and point at you.

The people only speak of the honors and benefits of being Corrupted and surviving the subsequent transformation of the Burden.

Mothers and fathers don’t weep when their child is covered with purple cracks, often shouting with glee that they were saved before praising the King of the Highcastle. The faithful shed tears of joy and celebrate when one of their own flock bled the turbid black, liquid from their orifices. Nobody ever cared for those that suffered the Burden. Or perhaps they once did, before the Black Robes became common.

Lukey couldn’t remember.

He was always behind the glass as far as he could recall. Floating, suffocating, paralyzed.

A compliant witness to the experiments they brought upon the unfortunate souls who managed to survive the Burden, each one becoming a husk of who they were. Castrated of emotion, soul, and humanity. They were utterly transformed inside and out.

The Black Robes came and went. Sometimes stopping by to check on his condition, never to speak, but to stare and record. He was just that after all, their rat.

Lukey was grateful though. They never poked or prodded him with the needles like they did the other folk. He was in his tube, safe in the embrace of the solution that kept him alive. No matter how bad the commotion was outside of the glass, nothing ever came in and nothing ever attempted to come near. He even considered himself their good luck charm. At least under his watch, nothing ever happened to the Black Robes like it did to those on the table.

At least not, until one day, the pattern changed.

It started off the same as always, in the tube, behind the glass. This time the room where several Black Robes usually sat and observed was empty. The table where other lab rats came and went disappeared. Only a lone Black Robe was stood in front of his tube and he could see their eyes. It was pretty. A color he wasn’t familiar with and an emotion he wasn’t familiar with.

He wanted to say hi. It was his first ever desire to do anything more than just float and watch, but he couldn’t move. So he blinked. They blinked back. Two souls separated by glass sharing a connection for the first time, Lukey wanted to remember it forever.

It’s unfortunate that nobody warns you how boring it is to be the subject within the test tube hidden somewhere in a dark empty room. There’s nowhere to learn stories of what’s happening beyond the glass. Perhaps there was nothing beyond the glass except that Black Robe that always stood before him on the dot every moment.

They always stood there, looking through with those pretty eyes. Sometimes, there was something mixed within, but Lukey could never ask. He couldn’t move or speak, no matter how much he tried. They never spoke, but they were the only constant in Lukey’s life besides the comfort of the glass and fluid.

At least until the day everything changed.

The day the glass broke. The day the fluid pushed him out and he experienced the cold and wet for the first time. The day a wailing sound that was like beast rung through his ears as red lights flooded the room. Yet, Lukey found his constant, the Black Robe with pretty eyes.

They called him Lucas. They gave him his own set of robes. They told him to run. He was confused, why did everything change?

Nobody tells you how boring it is. How it feels to be the subject within the test tube in which the Black Robes observe you. How the sight of a grotesque creature makes your skin crawl and your heart burn with hatred. How their slick bodies feel against your flesh as they pull out every thread of memory that made you, you.

And this Lukey assumes, is because there’s nobody left. His vision fades back into the dark, despair filling his body, unable to call and cry for help. For Newt. For—

Nothing.

It’s all boring here.

See, the thing about me is that I don't care if the corruption is sentient has emotions and feels lonely. I don't care if it questions its right to live as much as any other players. I'm too resentful of all it killed in the Kingdom of Null.

I feel like lots of other povs don't have the full picture of what happened to that kingdom like Lukey pov as he read in his past in the memory lane. Yes, most of them know about the calamities from the library archives, but that book is not even slightly as touching as Newt and Lukey's history. Because they are from the kingdom pov and theirs is from two civilians povs.

How everyone's life's got slowly destroyed by the calamities, the few survivors gathering scared near the kingdom castle, just trying to survive, and still having to work and fix their homes and care for their loved ones and try to build a future even with the looming treath of the corruption killing them bit by bit. How Newt, turned into a keeper and living thru milenia, still thinksand mourns what his life could've had been if it was not destroyed by an apocalypse.

How in the very last days the kingdom gathered everyone to the end raid in one last attempt to kill what was killing them. Everyone, even the children and the elderly. We know about grandma keeper. She was just an old lady and she went to the end war because she had no other options.

The corruption and it's calamities killed everyone, and what it didn't kill it trapped in the shape of keepers. So even if the corruption is sentient and feels lonely, what right to live it has in this universe after all it's done?
