Hello, beautiful! I hope you’re doing SPECTACULAR!!! Can I request a Tmr! Newt x GN! Reader, whereas Newt avows to look after everyone and fore sakes himself. Even so, the Reader avows to look after Newt through the means of caring for him. He notices it. Thank you!
Hi! I AM doing SPECTACULAR!!! How about you?
The moment you came up in the Glade, you noticed it. How could you not? It was practically staring you down. Newt was overwhelmed. But then again, could you blame the poor boy? He had taken it upon himself to make sure everyone else in the Glade was comfortable and happy- no matter if that meant stretching himself thin.
As he gave you a tour of the Glade, you could see it clear as day. Throughout the day, people kept calling on Newt, asking for his help. Frypan wanted Newt to go see if the Slicers had pork he could use. Gally needed to approve a new building. The track-hoes were wondering what to do with their overflow of tomatoes. Then, as he led you closer to the maze, a runner bolted out, asking if he’d seen a person named ‘Minho’. Newt had pressed a finger to his temple and answered his question with a, “No, I’m showing the greenie around.”
Later at the bonfire Newt slumped down next to you, smiling sloppily. He handed you a mug of a drink that was absolutely disgusting before striking up a lovely conversation. But you could hardly get far before someone whisked him away with a question. It was at that moment when you vowed to take care of the boy.
You don’t know why you wanted to make sure Newt was okay, but something about him drew you to him; whether it was his adorable smile or his kind nature that looked out for everyone. But he didn’t look out for himself. Officially or unofficially, that would be your job.
It started off simple: making sure he got to meals on time, putting an extra blanket on his hammock if it was a cold night, and if you saw too many boys coming up to beg him for help, you would intervene and direct their attention to you, helping them with their problems, ergo, taking the stress out of Newt’s hands. However, you would say the most important thing you did to alleviate Newt’s anxiety was giving him a tight hug every day before bed.
Newt noticed. He noticed your reminders that lunch was in ten minutes, the extra blankets, the way the boys left him alone whenever you came along, and the loving hug you gave him every night.
He just didn’t know what to think of it.
One night at the bonfire, Newt was staring into the flames, contemplating what to do. Should he tell you to stop? But he liked your attention. Should he ask why you did it? But then you might get embarrassed. Did you know he knew about you helping him? Did you want to know he knew about you helping him? Did he want-
“Hey Newt.” Minho clumsily sat down next to him. “What’s up? You seem…. Preoccupied? Overthoughtful? Distracted? Distant. The word I want is distant.”
“I’m just thinkin’ about Y/n.” Newt took a gulp of Gally’s drink.
“Why?”
“Uh… They keep doing things for me. Almost like they’re looking after me. Why? Can I not look after myself?” Newt wondered, staring off into nothingness.
“Go talk… Why don’t you go… Talk!” Minho drunkenly stumbled for words, gesturing nowhere in your direction.
“That’s a good idea.” Newt stood and shuffled over to you. Noticing, you patted the space next to him and he complied, sitting down.
“You aren’t drinking.” He noted.
“It’s still terrible. I don’t know how you put up with it. What’s up?”
“Um, well, I’ve noticed some things… I wanted to ask…”
“I’m looking out for you.” You nodded, knowing exactly what he wanted to talk about the moment he started. Clicking your tongue, you said, “And you wanna know why. I just noticed that you were overworking. You always wanted to make sure everyone was okay and satisfied, but as you were doing that, you weren’t caring about yourself. You needed someone to look out for you because you weren’t doing it for yourself. And I took that upon myself. I’m sorry if it’s weird, but I just wanted to make sure you were-”
Newt cut you off, “No. I like it. Thank you. I guess I kind of needed someone to look out for me, whether I knew it or not. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
You both shared a smile before you leaned your head upon Newt’s shoulder, both of you resting for the first time in a long while.
