How did the ancient greeks view witchcraft ?

i had to look this one up because i had no idea lol. but i found this quote by mark cartwright on the ancient.eu site- “Magic in the Greek world was not just prevalent in the realm of private individuals, neither was it reserved for the poor and illiterate.” basically what this means is that a lot of people did it, and it was pretty widespread among greece. also, apparently greek officials would commission a witch to protect their cities from other witches. wild, right?

there’s also the goddess hekate, who is the goddess of witchcraft. this quora answer (hard link for now- https://www.quora.com/How-did-the-Ancient-Greeks-worship-Hecate) says that hekate was “...one of the main deities worshiped in Athenian households as a protective goddess and one who bestowed prosperity and daily blessings on the family.”

The thing of it is, very few people think (white and/or Western magic-practicing) witches are in the employ of the devil nowadays. This is not perpetuating any kind of harmful stereotype that’s going to hurt real people. If anything, as a modern witch in a Western tradition, you’re more likely to have to explain to people that you’re not Wiccan- if you’re not -than that you haven’t made a blood pact with the family goat.

It’s a historical movie about a historical time period that has nothing to say about witches as people. The only eventual witch we do know as a character, Thomasin, is actually quite sympathetic and driven to her fall from grace by a desire for something better than the horrible life she’s known so far. So I don’t really understand anyone taking offense at the movie on those grounds.

Thanks! I made it back in April and it’s my only complete day dress so far, so it was really the only option. I couldn’t raise my arms much above my shoulders, but that wasn’t a huge issue for this particular job.

And as I’ve said, if I were a vampire, I would be one from the 1870s. But I’m not a vampire at all, obviously. Not remotely. Nope.
