The people that want cis people to use different pronouns for them than they want trans people to use for them. It’s so confusing and honestly kind of bigoted. I really hope it’s just a tumblr thing and not IRL. Although it weirds me out on tumblr too.
How do you propose how to tell if someone is cis? Do you think you can tell if someone is cis or trans by looking at them? What about people who are trans and stealth? Do you want them to out themselves? What about people who are trans and closeted? Do you want those people to out themselves? What about cistrans, cis nonbinary, and other complex identities where someone can be both cis and cisn’t? Do you even know that that exists?
The only way this can get worse is if someone wants “TMAs” and “TMEs” to call them different pronouns. Which, yup, I saw that too. Excellent way to broadcast “I am not safe for nonbinary people or intersex people”.
The blog I’m talking about said that only TMAs could use it/its for her. Which… huh? Does she think only TMAs can reclaim that pronoun set? Like, I’m as TME as they come. At least by the metric most of these people use to determine whether someone is affected by transmisogyny (AGAB and nothing else *insert eye roll*). I guarantee you that people have referred to me as an “it” to degrade me before. Trans women are not the only people that that happens to.
This is transphobia and varsexism.
You cannot tell who is cis or trans. Cis people can have any appearance due to being varsex, and trans people can have any appearance. Also, being closeted, as you say.
By assuming who is and isn't cis or trans, you're basically reinforcing stereotypes. What if that "trans" person you're talking to is cisgender and intersex? What if the "cis" person you're talking to is transgender non-binary? What if the "trans" person you're talking to is cisgender gender non-conforming?
And some people are both cis AND trans, due to being varsex, multigender, multitransitional, plural, etc. I wish the queer community would grasp this by now.
