How do Aja and Jim tell each other about their gender identity?

Firstly, sorry for letting this get lost in my drafts for a while *insert awkward laugh emoji I can’t find here*

Aja would probably mention theirs offhandedly.  On Akiridion-5, they’re significantly more relaxed about gender than people are on Earth.  So Aja has known for a long time that they’re the Akiridion equivalent of nonbinary.  Though, it would take them a while to realize they’d like to use they/them pronouns.  At first, Aja thought there wasn’t a significant difference between Earthling pronouns and that they all were interchangeable, but when they found out that pronouns are often associated with gender, they decided on their favored set (altho Aja also is fine with being referred to with either he/him or she/her pronouns too).  That conversation is also what led into them coming out to Jim.

At first, Jim didn’t come out to Aja.  He liked that they’d only known him as a boy.  He was scared that if she found out he’d once been something different, it would change the way they feel about him.  I think it would come up in a situation where Aja sees an old, childhood photo of Jim and ask him if he’d had a sister (excitedly - the idea of bonding with him over having a sibling thrills Aja).  Jim would hesitantly explain, and Aja would enthusiastically accept him.

Jim first figured out he was trans when he was comparatively young. His mom had left one of her medical textbooks open on the table. Jim was bored and flipped through the book. That how he found out what being gender non conforming was. The description of dysphoria matched him to a T.

The first person he told was Toby. Toby wasn't entirely sure what that all meant but then first thing he said was that Jim was his friend and nothing would change that. The two of them worked together to come up with names Jim might like. They tested them and different haircuts and styles on video game characters. But James Lake was the name that stuck. (I'm partial to the theory that James was Not actually his dad's name or maybe it was some attempt to connect with a father who had abandoned him.

The next person Jim told was his mom. Jim was so nervous. He had read stories online about how some parents reacted. He had a bag packed and left at Toby's house, just in case. Turns out it wasn't necessary. Barbara immediately hugged him, told him he loved him no matter what, and asked what pronouns he wanted to her to use for him. She did have him speak to a child psychologist just to make sure it wasn't due to some underlying trauma from his dad leaving.

The next major person to be told was Mr. Strickler. Barbara talked to each of Jim's teachers before the first day of class to make sure he wouldn't be misgendered or dead named, any teacher that resisted she would pull him out of their class and lodge a complaint. Mr. Strickler had his own experience and struggle with gender, so he did everything in his power to make sure Jim had everything he needed. Even going so far as to change his name in the course record to minimize the risk of being dead named by a substitute. Strickler also helped Barbara lodge complaints for teachers who were less supportive. The two were well known to each other by the time of the show.

Since I accidentally revealed myself in my last ask I might as well proceed to stay public xD Anygays. Imagine Jim trying to hide that he's trans but one day Spock comes rushing into his quarters while Jim's not wearing a shirt, revealing the scars on his chest. Spock freezes for a second, staring at Jims beautiful chest. He then looks up, giving Jim a warm and accepting smile before proceeding what he was doing, transforming Jims scared and anxious expression into one of happiness and relief.
