Elsa was born male, but despite that fact she always knew deep down that she was a girl
She tried to explain this to her parents in the best way that she could at such a young age, but they always told her that she was a man and to knock it off
The only person to (outwardly) believe her was Anna, who looked up to her and loved her big sister
Despite being so young she understood that even though her parents said otherwise her older sibling was actually her older sister
She was even the one to give her a new name, that being Elsa, a name she came across in one of the stories they read
They would often sneak out after their parents put them to bed to play princesses, and it was the only time that Elsa felt she really got to be herself
However, one fateful night her parents caught them and became enraged that their child was "filling Anna's head with that nonsense"
Elsa became very upset and her powers exploded out, sending ice and snow around the room, with a stray blast hitting Anna in the head
Elsa was horrified obviously and started bawling
Her parents then raided the library until they found a map that lead them to the trolls, who they knew might have the power to heal Anna
They rushed there and thankfully the trolls were able to heal her, while also removing any memories of Elsa's magic
While they did that their father demanded that the trolls also remove any memories of Elsa being Elsa
The trolls had a issue with this, a pretty major one, but the king only reminded them that he could send the army to smash them into bits should they choose to defy him
So the trolls removed the memories, reluctantly
He tried to get them to do the same to Elsa, but the trolls quickly explained that they were feelings, not memories, and they couldn't do anything about those, and even if they could, they wouldn't
Grand Pabbie then gave them the whole speech that they needed love to help control her powers, but this speech explicitly giving them the actual answer was promptly ignored in favor of what Elsa's parents thought was the answer, which was locking her in her room until she could control her powers
As Elsa grew, her powers did so as well, quickly spiraling out of control
She desperately wanted to see Anna, to talk with her, to play with her, anything, but it was strictly forbidden, not only because she might hurt Anna but because she might "put those crazy ideas in her head"
They reminded her at every instance that she was a man and needed to act like it, punishing her if they saw anything that they considered to be "feminine", which was seemingly everything
I'm not gonna go into detail about the punishment, let's just say they weren't very nice
And then they would punish her whenever her powers would explode as a result of the stress and pain, only compounding the issues
Things became even worse when puberty started and her body began to acquire masculine features
She begged and begged her parents to give her puberty blockers but they refused, telling her that she was finally becoming the man she was
They wouldn't even give her a razor to shave, forcing her to craft a crude one out of ice, cutting herself many times in the process
After realizing that, she began to use that razor for... other reasons
She cried herself to sleep every night for years
On multiple occasions she considered killing them using her magic, taking Anna and running away, but quickly realized the many flaws in that plan and chose to just deal with it
She even considered killing herself, but she refused to put Anna through that
And then came the 2nd best day in her life, the day she received the news that her parents died
She cried with joy, and even more when she realized that no one was stopping her from being with Anna
She thanked every deity she could think of for saving her from the torture, and for once her powers seemed to be under control
Then she came to the unfortunate realization that they might've been right
Among the many things that they drilled into her was that no one was going to think she was a woman and that they wouldn't stand having a (t-slur) on the throne, and that they might even go so far as to kill her over it
She realized then that she had 3 choices
1.) Keep pretending to be a man and stay alive
3.) Be herself and risk death
3 was discarded, much to her dismay, because as much as she didn't really care for her own life she couldn't risk the people becoming angry at Anna
2 seemed good, but she lived in a castle her entire life with servants, she has no idea how the real world works
And even if she was able to build herself a life, she's a princess, people would recognize her and return her to the castle
That left only option 1, which she resigned herself to
She became even more depressed, not even able to go and comfort Anna, who spent hours sobbing outside of her door, begging to come in
She stayed in that miserable state for 3 years, until the day of her coronation arrived
She had been dreading this day for years
No longer could she just hide in her room and avoid the reality that she was going to have to go out and be seen as male by everyone, especially Anna
As the servants helped her into her suit, she swore that once this was over she was going to rip it to shreds with her ice
As she walked down the aisle to the altar where the priest waited, she spotted Anna who waived to her with glee, but it only expanded the pit of dread in Elsa's stomach
As the priest declared her "King **** of Arendelle" she threw up in her mouth and she struggled to hold back not only her powers, but her tears
And then came the party that followed, when she and Anna would meet face to face
It pained her so to hear Anna, the only supportive person in her life, call her by her deadname
Honestly, she's surprised that her powers didn't break out right then and there
No, that only happened when Anna came back with some guy and declared that they were getting married
That drew her out of her stupor, and she rightfully told Anna that she knew that guy for like 12 hours max, they weren't in love
From there a massive argument ensured, eventually resulting in Anna ripping her glove off and exclaiming that she couldn't live this anymore, ****!
Everything crashed down on her all at one, and with all the might in her chest she screamed "MY NAME IS ELSA!", with her powers also coming out
Frightened, she couldn't look Anna or anyone else in the eye as she stormed out, running to the North Mountain
Well, that could've gone better
She realized that she was kinda fucked, there was no way she could go back down to Arendelle, god they were probably organizing a mob to come kill her now
And Anna, poor Anna, god knows that they're doing to her
As she thought of Anna, her mind drew her back to the fun times they had as kids, the only happy memories she had to draw upon
She remembered how they would play princesses and imagine that they lived in a castle (which they did, but they kinda just ignored that)
Those memories unlocked something in her, and she began to build a castle out of ice, constructing something similar to what she made for them when they were kids
She even rebuilt Olaf, a snowman character who regularly appeared in their adventures
He later disappeared but she wasn't super worried, it was storming outside and the wind probably knocked him over
Giggling with glee, she finally turned to herself
As promised she tore up her suit, cackling the entire time, and eventually constructed herself a dress out of ice
It took a few tries but she eventually came up with something she was happy with
Then she undid her long hair, which had grown tremendously in the three years since her parents forced her to get a haircut on the regular, braiding it
Looking at her reflection in the ice, she finally saw Elsa, and swore that even if she were to die, she would spend the rest of her life as herself
Anna would be alright, she was a smart girl, she would find someway to disconnect herself from her and would rule the kingdom better than she ever could
She spent the next few days testing things out, like high heels, jewelry (all made of ice), even making herself an ice tiara, and just being overjoyed
But her fun had to end with a knocking at her door
She was a little down that her fun was ending already, but figured that if it was time, it was time, and reluctantly opened the door, only to see Anna
So after Elsa stormed out, Anna had to deal with a stressed out kingdom which was getting snowed on in summer, but her first priority was always her sibling? sister?
She wasn't sure, but all she knew was that she had to go after them
She decided to leave her fiancee, Hans, in charge, but before she left Hans shared his theory, that her sibling was one of those transgenders, telling her about how dangerous they were
She didn't really buy it, but as she made her way up the mountain, dreadfully unprepared, she couldn't get the thought out of her mind
They did seemingly curse the entire kingdom with an enteral winter after all
Her train of thought was interrupted when her horse dumped her, and she fell into a frozen river
She quickly rushed over to what appeared to be a cabin in the middle of the woods, only to realize that it was some sort of store
Stuff happened and she was able to convince this guy, Kristoff, to take her up the mountain
While the two made their way up the mountain, she explained what went down in the kingdom, eventually sharing what Hans told her
Kristoff was taken aback by the fact that she was even considering what he said
He admitted that he didn't know her sister, only hearing bits and pieces from his family and her, and it sounded like she didn't know that much about her either, but it didn't sound like she froze the kingdom on purpose
She was clearly frightened and she didn't help matters by yelling at her over trying to get married to some guy she knew for not even a whole day
And like, you can't categorize an entire group of people like that
Sure there might be a few bad apples, but not every transgender person is evil
She tried fighting him on the Hans point but had no defense for the other stuff
Hans' argument fell apart entirely when they came across a talking snowman
Y'know what, she's seen so much weird shit in the past day or so, she's not gonna even question it
It took a minute, but she eventually recognized him as Olaf, that silly snowman her and Elsa made years ago
It was only then she realized that if Elsa was really trying to hurt people, why would she create something like Olaf, who was a reminder of the good times they had as kids?
Now assured that her sister wouldn't hurt her, the three of them made their way up to the North Mountain, eventually coming across a giant palace made of ice
Yeah, that was probably where Elsa was
After steeling her nerves, she knocked on the door, and its opening revealed her sister, looking surprised
She looked completely different
Not just her clothes and hair, but the way she carried herself, it was just so much more confident
And for the first time that she can remember, Elsa had a smile on her face, albeit a very small and nervous one
Anna returned the smile and commented that she looked beautiful, before awkwardly making her way into the palace
Kristoff, sensing this was gonna be a very serious conversation, held Olaf back from going inside
The sisters nervously made their way inside, neither wanting to break the peace, until Elsa quietly muttered that she was here to bring her back, wasn't she?
Anna admitted that yeah kinda
Elsa sighed before saying that a Queen must meet her end with dignity
Anna, confused AF, goes whoah whoah whoah back up, what do you mean death???
Elsa gives a small chuckle before stating that the people were never going to stand for someone like her on the throne, she was a monster, a beast, a freak, they were probably in the streets now rioting for her death
But she was ready, she wasn't going to fight it, and if she died then Arendelle would be free
Anna stopped her there, declaring that there was no mob, no one was trying to kill her, where did she even get that idea from, she was here to take her home because she loved her and wanted them to be like they were when they were kids
Elsa again let out a small chuckle before saying that as much as she'd love that, she can't, she already hurt her, gesturing to the white strand in her hair
After receiving a confused stare in return, she explained everything that happened that fateful night, up to the trolls removing her memories, and she started to explain the things their parents told her, only for Anna to pull her into a hug
Elsa was deeply uncomfortable but Anna was nice and warm so she let it slide
Anna said that she was so sorry that their parents made them believe that, but she wasn't ugly or a monster, she was her sister, and she knows that her sister would never hurt her
The combination of love and acceptance caused Elsa to just start sobbing right there in Anna's arms
After a while, and with Anna's reassurance, she was able to calm down and agreed to go back
The two walked out and Elsa was introduced to Kristoff and Olaf (she can create life??? what the hell????) and they began their journey down to the kingdom
During their travels Elsa inquired as to what Kristoff did, and he responded that he delivered ice, which is a little difficult considering the circumstances
Elsa, confused, asked what circumstances
He shot Anna a look that asked "you didn't tell her???", before he was forced to explain that she kinda set off an eternal winter, everywhere
Elsa halted immediately, a look of terror evident on her face, before stuttering out that she couldn't fix that
Anna stepped in, saying that of course she can, she knows she can, she'll help her
Elsa took a step away from them and turned away, her mind reeling with fear
Of course she isn't going to get her happily ever after, what kind of fool was she?
Maybe, just maybe her parents were in fact full of shit and the people won't immediately kill her, but that combined with setting off an eternal winter? She was a dead woman, not that she really cared, expect for the fact that Anna would get caught up in her mess
Anna would defend her to her last breath, and the people would think that she was apart of it and they would kill her too
But before she could run back, the sound of horses skidding to a halt make itself clear, revealing several men brandishing weapons
Leading them was Hans, who rushed over to Anna, trying to pull her into a hug, but she coldly brushed him off, moving to place herself between Elsa and Hans
Hans tried to say something but before could get a word in Anna ripped into him, asking him what his problem is
He looked confused, so Anna explained that he said some absolutely awful things about Elsa, and it was all bullshit
And she was right, she couldn't marry a man she just met, because that's not enough time to learn that he was prejudiced against her sister and thought she was some kind of monster
Hans responded by saying monster? have you seen the things he's done? He froze the kingdom, people are starving and shivering in their homes, they're without power (oh yeah this is a modern AU too), anyone would see that and call the person responsible a monster
Anna yelled that she is not a monster, she is a scared young woman whose been through so much and survived
Hans then said survived? there are people there who won't survive because of this winter, before muttering that the monster's magic has infected her as well, before declaring to the crowd that with the King being a monster freak and the Princess being incapacitated, that leaves him in charge, and he orders them to arrest the two of them for treason
The men around Hans moved to arrest them
The second one of them put their hands on Anna something in Elsa snapped, and a huge wall of ice erupted from the ground, separating the two groups
As the men made their way around, Elsa started freaking out
Anna moved to grab her hands which were currently pulling on her hair, but she was unable to
Kristoff, realizing that their biggest powerhouse was out of commission, climbed atop Sven and grabbed an icicle off a nearby tree, before telling Olaf to distract them
Olaf, not knowing what to do, went up to them and introduced himself, saying he was Olaf, and he liked warm hugs and-
He was immediately shot several times
But since Olaf is made of snow, he quickly reformed, which scared the shit of out them
One guy even pissed his pants
While they were distracted Kristoff, on Sven, rode into them, knocking them over
He quickly jumped off and knocked them out with an icicle to the face, before grabbing their guns and distributing them
A firefight then ensured, Kristoff hiding behind a tree and shooting at the men while they kept trying to advance on the sisters
The gunshots were not doing Elsa any favors as she kept pulling on her hair and screaming
Anna kept trying to calm her down in between returning fire, with none of her shots getting anywhere close bc she was a princess, what training would she have had?
Kristoff was hitting some targets, but he was running low on bullets and they were outnumbered
And Olaf was too busy shooting himself to be of any use
Slowly coming to the realization that things were hopeless, Anna decided to stop firing and chose to pull Elsa into a tight hug, telling her that if this was the end, she was proud to be her sister
Something inside Elsa clicked upon hearing those words, and she slowly let go of her hair and stood up
As Hans ordered everyone to concentrate their fire on Elsa, walls of ice formed to block the bullets and blocks emerged from the ground, throwing the men into the air
As she got closer and closer to Hans, he became increasingly desperate, shooting again and again and again until he ran out of bullets
As he went to grab another mag, he was snatched from the ground by a giant snow monster, and was held in its grasp as the five of them got their bearings
In her most authoritative voice, Elsa declared that he, Hans, was charged with attempted murder of the Queen and Princess and would be transported to the castle dungeons to await trial
During the trek back down, Anna punched him in the balls several times and he spent the entire time groaning in pain
Her and Kristoff were also joking around and maybe, just maybe, something started to be built between them
While walking Elsa suddenly realized oh yeah eternal winter, I have to do something about that
But for once, she didn't feel the chains of self-doubt
These were her powers, she controlled them, and with some encouragement from Anna, she lifted the winter
After saving Olaf and the giant, which he affectionally named Marshmallow (how does he even know what those are???) from melting, the group wandered into town
The people stared at them, unsure of what to think
The winter was gone sure, but the man Princess Anna left in charge was being dragged into town and she was standing with the one who caused said winter, and what was up with the snowmen?
Sensing the discomfort, Anna impulsively yelled to the crowd that they would be having a press conference in a few hours
Elsa looked like she wanted to murder her sister
All in all, it went a lot better than they had feared
The people seemed to accept their story, especially when Hans was brought up and admitted to all of his crimes, having agreed to do so in exchange for being extradited back to the Southern Isles instead of being executed
They also seemed to really enjoy the promise by the royal family that they would be more open with the people, even agreeing to keep the castle gates open for audiences with the Queen
The only issue was that the people seemed iffy on accepting Elsa as Queen and not King
Of course there were some outward supporters, with several LGBT+ organizations around the world celebrating her, but there were definitely critics, most problematically some of her advisors
Arendelle is an absolute monarchy, a rarity in the modern world, but the monarch can only know so much, so they had a team of advisors to advise them on certain areas, such as economy, defense, etc.
Most of the current staff had been selected by her father, and the ones who had not been were picked by her grandfather, and none of them were particularly pleased with a (t-slur) ruling their kingdom
Most were not outwardly combative, but some definitely were, and questioned every decision she made
Her original plan was to just put up with it, as these men had so much experience that it would hurt the nation to lose them, but she would come from meetings so drained that Anna noticed and demanded to know what was going on
Her and Anna have a "no closed doors" policy, which applies both literally and figuratively, implemented so if something is bothering one of them they can't keep it bottled up
Anna suggested letting the worst offenders go as a warning to the others to behave or find another job, and this solution satisfied her
The look on the advisor's faces when she revealed that their services were no longer needed was hilarious
The rest of them got the hint and exclusively refer to her as 'Queen Elsa'
Ok I'm done with angst I want some fluff
So Anna, Kristoff and Olaf have formed the "Elsa Protect Squad" whose goal is to threaten anyone who misgenders Elsa with violence
If someone is being particularly antagonistic they'll pay a visit, brandishing weapons, Kristoff with a shovel, Anna with a bat (she swings both ways, violently, with bat), and remind them that Elsa is their Queen, not their King, and if they have to visit again, well, Olaf is very interested in fire these days
Olaf will then brandish some matches
Elsa does not approve and has told them multiple times to knock it off because one day they're gonna piss off the wrong person and it's gonna become a whole incident that she's gonna have to deal with, but they refuse to listen bc "its working"
Much to her dismay it is actually working
One day Elsa woke up to Anna jumping on her bed, demanding that she come outside
She was not having it and had to be dragged into the courtyard where a pile of portraits of their parents and pre-transition Elsa laid
Kristoff and Olaf were also waiting with marshmallows
Understanding the assignment, Elsa gladly accepted a match from Olaf, before throwing it onto the pile
They had a good morning putting the past where it belongs and eating smores
Soon after the incident the trolls came to visit the newly christened Queen
Grand Pabbie personally came to apologize to Elsa, wishing that he could've done more to help her and her sister
Elsa quickly forgave him, knowing that he had to look after his people
As a token of his regret, he gave Elsa some potions which were basically magic HRT that works faster and better
It wouldn't change her reproductive system but it would get everything besides that
Anna loves teaching Elsa about girl stuff and the two constantly have sleepovers
They watch bad teen girl movies, like this American one about some popular girls who all had the same name for some reason???, ate junk food (especially chocolate) and just spent time together as sisters
Anna taught Elsa about nails, makeup (why was it so complicated???), fashion, accessories
Her head was spinning trying to keep all the information in, but she was just so happy
Soon after everything died down, the sisters had a long conversation about exactly what happened during their years of seperation
Anna became so sick upon hearing just how their parents treated them that she vomited
They disowned their parents from beyond the grave, only referring to them as "sperm donor" and "egg donor"
She also made Elsa see a therapist bc as she said "girl you have some issues"
They were able to find a therapist who was willing to jump through the hoops to protect the privacy of the Queen, and she really is helping Elsa unpack the trauma she went though and helping her focus on the now
Also soon after their cousin, Rapunzel, came to visit, not having been able to spend time together bc of the incident
She brought along her partners, Eugene and Cassandra
Elsa hadn't really thought of romance too much, but one look at Cassandra made her realize that she was gay, just so, so gay
Anna tried convincing her to try dating, but in a rare victory Elsa was able to convince her that dating is kinda hard when you were the "Snow Queen" as she is called
One of her first acts as Queen was to enact a shit ton of laws protecting the rights of trans people
HRT/All gender affirming care up to and include puberty blockers would be covered by their socialized healthcare, she loosened the requirements to have gender dysphoria diagnosed, she enacted protections for trans kids, the whole shebang
Arendelle is now known as a safe haven for trans people and many of them seek to move to the country
So many that they have the highest amount of trans people per capita of any nation
She even flew a trans pride flag from one of the castle's spires
God she loves being an absolute monarch
Whenever they get to the Enchanted Forest and find their parent's ship, they are paralyzed with the thought that they might be alive
Thankfully they were dead, and Elsa had never felt more relived in her entire life
