TRANSFORMERS: STRAGGLERS
Chapter 2: Welcome! We're FU-
Hot Rod is sick of working this boring, thankless job, protecting a shitty little research base and energon depot at the very edge of the universe from the Decepticon's evil shitty little research base and energon depot on the same stupid rock. He wants action! Adventure! The respect of his peers! But all he's getting now is damage control after another stupid Decepticon attack takes down their long range comms array.
When Ultra Magnus' Ship arrives out of nowhere during a skirmish, Hot Rod thinks his time has finally come, but when a stray cannon blast destroys his last ticket out of here at the same time he finds out the war is over for good, it's up to both factions to work together to return the stragglers back home to cybertron.
Transformers: Stragglers is an Original TF Fan Continuity, with chapters written as episodes in a series. Taking inspiration from TF G1, TF:MTMTE, and Star Trek: The Next Generation, this series is both a comedy and a character study of what it means to have peace after a life of war, what it means to be redeemed, and most importantly, how much can one bot take with the weight of his crew's and his enemies' futures on his shoulders?
CHAPTER 2 DESC: Hot Rod and Onslaught do some problem solving from either side of the battlefield.
TAGS: Comedy, Drama, Slice of Life, Genre typical depictions of cartoon warfare, Hot Rod is Struggling, Onslaught is Struggling, everyone is struggling.

Captain’s Log, Cycle 174 of Kilocycle 845,206, Captain Onslaught Recording.
Onslaught: … Okay. Okay. What happened earlier in the cycle was… an error in planning. The plan in question was perfect. Or it would have been, if Vortex and Blast Off could aim a falling satellite properly. We could’ve had this over and done with were it not for the tactical oversight of assuming I could trust my boys with something more complex than cleaning a toilet. Vortex? That one’s on me. But Blast Off… [sigh] I really thought I could assume more of Blast Off, I really did. [a long pause.] Those seekers though. I told them we’d be bringing the satellite down, but should it be that much to assume something might go wrong? I swear shockwave must have lobotomized the part of their processors that retains information and processes it into thoughts. Oh, yeah fellas, don’t ask your captain for the go ahead before you start a fight, yeah, that’s on me. Stupid seekers… [Rolling of chair wheels. A drawer opening.] A busted hangar could be mitigated, a ruined shuttle? We could order a new one, even with a totalled comms, we’ve only gotta wait until Swindle is back with the cruiser to tell him to shoot back out and pick one up. But that’d mean that we’d need a command to request one from. And if that big blue bitch isn’t joshing, we ain’t got no command to request anymore… I’ll have to pry some shanix out of Swindle’s wallet and take the cruiser to the outpost myself. If I can just get enough… hm. [a long pause. The sound of him standing up from his chair] click.
“You can come out of the vent now, Slipstream. Jig’s up.” Onslaught said to the room, leaning against the control panel.
The vent hatch in the ceiling clanked open, and Slipstream slithered out, her wings unfolding with a long stretch. She glared up at him, one eye more squinted than the other. “Stupid seekers huh?”
“Save it.” Onslaught snapped. He paused, his visor dimmed for a moment. Vent in, 1… 2… 3… And out, 1… 2… 3… “What do you want.”
“You act like I didn’t do everything you asked me to do today.” Slipstream spat, ignoring him. “You said ‘get the coordinates for the satellite’? I did it. ‘Sabotage the dish’? Done. ‘Recon on the new ship?’ I was on it. And what’s the payoff, huh, cap? Shot at. By YOU. I could’ve d-”
Onslaught held up a hand. “I’m not gonna apologize to ya for some shit Brawl did, you got a problem? Take it up with him.” He brushed past her and through the door of his office.
Slipstream followed, pace quickened to match his stride. “You KNOW Brawl couldn’t rub two neurocircuits together if you gave him a year’s head start! You can’t control your damn team, Onslaught, and that is your problem.”
Onslaught’s optic twitched. 1… 2… 3… fuck it. He whipped around, looming over the seeker with a blazing visor. “Great, thanks for the feedback, what do you want from me right now, champ, a lollipop and a kiss on your nonexistent booboos? If you haven’t noticed, your frame’s still intact, you’re not hacking up energon, and you’re still cognitively aware enough to be a pain in my aft.” He jabbed a digit at her chest. “You are fine, and therefore you are not high on my priority list, babe. Go cry about it if you were so scared, I’ve got a crew to get home, and the more you piss me off, the smaller your chances of getting out of here get, capiche?”
Temporarily cowed, but still seething with rage, Slipstream just curled her lip in response, processor clearly cooking up a nice long retort.
Onslaught didn’t give her the satisfaction. “Wanna talk about controlling a team, Slippy? How’s about you get a handle on those headcases you call an air team, huh?” He snapped, turning on his heel and trudging down the hallway.
Seekers.
Slipstream just slinked away, wandering off down the hallway in the opposite direction. Good. Onslaught thought to himself bitterly. He looked out through the hallway window, past the Autobot Command Ship’s wreckage and to the slightly scorched Autobot base. Both sides would be gunning for a way out soon, after it all sank in.
No war, huh? It was a sentence he thought he’d never say. He’d always wondered about it, what’d happen if they finally won. He’d never even considered that it might end clean like this. Another oversight for the tally. He was getting annoyed at how often those were cropping up in the past few days, it was becoming a pattern.
Maybe he was losing his edge… getting sloppy.
Onslaught shook his head, turning a corner and strolling down a ramp. He ducked into Blast Off’s lab and sighed a bit, letting his posture relax. Blast Off didn’t even look up from his work, hunched over the remains of the atomizer brawl had ruined. The quiet fizzle of welding tools was only slightly overshadowed by the music he was playing.
“Blast Off.” Onslaught said.
The fizzling stopped.
“Got a question for you.” He added.
Blast Off set his tools down, but didn’t turn.
“What happened up there?” Onslaught asked, trying to keep his voice even.
Blast Off was quiet for a long moment. “... Exactly what you think happened. Vortex got impatient and brought it down early.”
Onslaught’s visor narrowed. “That all?”
Blast Off angled his head, as if he hadn’t heard him correctly. “Are you implying something, On?”
“I don’t know, are you leaving something out, Off?”
Blast Off spun around. “Is this really what you’re worried about right now? We’re stranded here, even when Swindle comes back with the Horsefly, we-”
Onslaught’s engine turned over loudly. “I ain’t askin’ about Swindle, I wanna know who’s fault it is that this went wrong.”
Blast Off’s lip curled in distaste. “I think we both know who’s fault it is, I think you don’t feel like admitting it.”
“Are you implying something??” Onslaught snarled.
Blast Off’s hands clenched for a moment, a thick tension filling the room. Then the spaceship sighed heavily and turned back around to his project. “I’ll start working on comms repairs soon. Maybe I can gut the Horsefly’s engine and do something else with the parts.”
Onslaught deflated a bit. “... Yeah. Good.” Guilt dangled in the silence between them, unbearable and heavy. “... Thanks.”
“Mhm.” Blast Off answered, already absorbed in his work again.
Onslaught sighed and ran his hand over his face. Usually he liked being in the lab. It was a quiet place, even with the music. Somewhere Onslaught could breathe for a moment. He offline his optics, counting his venting again to the slow tempo of Blast Off’s boring work music. Now though, it felt like every bit of scrap and machinery was judging him.
Vision flipped back on, Onslaught wandered back the way he came, but at the doorframe he lingered for a moment. He glanced over his shoulder, as if hoping for something. All that he got in response was the fizzling of Blast Off’s tools and the dreary tune of his music.
So he left, wandering off down the hall.
Down another floor, back around a set of windows facing the same view. Across the way, he could see movement through the windows, just vaguely. Onslaught thought for a moment, planting his hands and leaning forward a bit to get a better view.
Narrowing his visor, Onslaught made his decision.
“War or no war, it doesn’t matter. I ain’t gettin cosy with a ‘bot.”

Meanwhile, at the Autobot Base
[add pep talk with Magnus here]
The hangar is completely destroyed. Comms Tower is scuttled. Minor blackening and fire damage on connected areas. Minor Roof breaches over eastern wing. In Summary: Damage mainly contained to hangar and comms tower, all remaining damage cosmetic or easily fixable.
Hot Rod sighed, letting the arm holding Tailgate’s report go limp by his side. He dragged a hand over his face and let his helm thunk back against the hallway wall. Great first impression, I’m sure Magnus is very impressed, he thought bitterly.
It was bad enough that their comms were down, it was worse that now a handful of the most important autobots to ever live were stuck on a nothing planet in the middle of nowhere. Hot Rod had begun to pace, anxiously glancing into the mess hall at the shellshocked pack of autobots gathered inside. They were all counting on him now. They’d counted on him before and he’d failed them, but now failure wasn’t an option. He couldn’t just throw his C-Team out with a shoddy Plan-B like he had earlier, they’d only ruin things for him again, but now, the stakes were impossibly higher. Sure he had a group he could depend on now, but it wasn’t as if they’d listen to him, he was just a captain. Like most people, next to Ultra Magnus, everyone seemed impossibly small.
The door to the mess hall swung open, and the hulking shape of Ultra Magnus filled the hallway in front of him. Where he expected rage, Hot Rod was greeted with a markedly concerned expression on the bot’s face.
“Captain.” he greeted with a nod. “Our teams have been waiting for your report for five minutes now, is everything alright?”
NO, you old jalopy, everything is NOT alright, we are STRANDED and I am RUINED and I’ll be lucky if Optimus even LOOKS at me again if we ever get back!! “Just pre-address jitters, you know how it is!” Hot Rod plastered on a smile. “Things are… rough… right now.” he paused for a second, a sinking feeling in his tanks. “I suppose that in such a crisis you’d uhm- You’d be assuming command? Sir?”
Ultra Magnus blinked, then his brow ridges shot up. “Hm? Oh yes, in standard practice, it would be my place to do so, however there are extraneous circumstances that must be considered.”
Now it was Hot Rod’s turn to blink. “What?”
Ultra Magnus sighed heavily. “Though I outrank you, I was given specific orders from Optimus Prime to observe your leadership abilities. And anyway, subsection 68-49b of the Autobot code states that if an Officer that has served for over 3,000,000 solar cycles and is eligible for retirement is placed in charge of at least double the crew than they were previously deployed with under the circumstances of an emergency, it falls to their judgement whether or not the next highest ranking officer should assume co-command to ensure the officer’s retirement application can be at least partially be honoured.”
Hot Rod blinked again. “... Take it again one more time?”
“I’m eligible for retirement, and you are the next highest ranking officer, meaning it falls to both of us to assume command due to the size of our gathered troops.” Ultra Magnus placed a heavy hand on Hot Rod’s shoulder. “Optimus believes you have what it takes to lead, and it’s my job to assess whether that is true.”
Hot Rod puffed his chest out. Optimus believes it, huh? He beamed. “You can count on me, Ultra Magnus, Sir!”
Ultra Magnus smiled back warmly. “Yes. I will do my utmost to guide you on your path without stepping in. My wisdom is yours to utilize, should you ever need advice.”
Hot Rod nodded quickly. “Yes, yes of course, definitely!” He turned to look at the mess hall again, brimming with confidence. Who cares if they were stuck, Optimus BELIEVED in him! Hot rod swaggered through the door, report in hand. “Alright folks, we’re in a rough state! But if we work together, I’m sure we can find a way out of this!”
The pack of autobots semi-catatonically looked back at him, then glanced nervously amongst themselves.
“With an appropriate strategy of course.” Ultra Magnus added from behind him. Hot Rod glanced over his shoulder at him. Okay… gonna listen to his address from next to him and not the crowd- weird, but okay.
The autobots seemed to relax a bit when Ultra Magnus was in front of them. Hot Rod wasn’t going to take that personally. Nope! “So! We don’t have any ships that can go off world that are salvageable, and our comms are down. Our first priority should be fixing the comms tower-“
“Nautica, you should go about assessing the most efficient use of materials in this endeavor.” Ultra Magnus cut in.
Nautica perked up a bit. “Yes of course Ultra Magnus, sir!”
Hot Rod glanced over his shoulder again, resetting his optics. But- he was- never mind, it was whatever. “Uh- yes, there should be some comms infrastructure that’s still usable in your ship, so maybe we can jerryrig something temporary with enough juice to get an SOS message out. We have no satellite, and the tower is broken, so we’ll want to find some other means of boosting our signal-“
“Perceptor, you should confer with the resident scientists on base to see what machinery we can convert into a tower or satellite.” Ultra Magnus interjected again.
Perceptor nodded agreeably. “As you command sir.”
Hot Rod’s optic twitched. “Okay! So Perceptor, you can meet with Brainstorm, and Nautica, you can go see about the comms module in the ship. You’ll-“
Ultra Magnus leaned down to Hot Rod’s audial. “She should go with a team to ensure her safety.”
Hot Rod fought back an engine revv. “I know that- Whirl, you make sure nobody gets in her way, Swerve, you help her carry anything she finds.”
Swerve grinned back in response. “You can count on us, boss!”
Whirl just stared at Nautica, golden optic round and wide, blades quivering slightly.
“Fantastic, you three can head out, Brainstorm, if you could show… Perceptor… to….” Hot Rod’s sentence slowed to a halt as he realized the jet was missing from the crowd. Of course. “Does anyone know where Brainstorm is?”
Tailgate raised his hand quickly. “Tailgate?” For an awkward moment Hot Rod waited to hear his report before remembering… his little thing. “Private Tailgate?”
“While I was doing my damage assessment I heard him in his observatory, Captain Hot Rod, sir!” The minibot barked out. Hot Rod allowed himself a flattered smile for the rarely seen respect. “He was throwing things and yelling, sir!”
Oh, awesome. Hot Rod sighed. “Okay! Well, I’ll take you up to meet him then, Perce!”
Perceptor grimaced a little bit.
Ultra Magnus leaned down to Hot Rod’s audial again. “Ratchet should be shown where the Medbay is as well. And-“
“FIRST AID!” The name came out of Hot Rod’s vocalizer a little too loud, making the bot jump. “If you could take Ratchet to the medbay please that’d be just STELLAR, thank you.”
First Aid glanced between Ultra Magnus and the captain for a moment, before nodding slowly. Oh what, do you need HIM to say it? You need HIS order and HIS permission? Oh I see how it is. THANKS, Aid.
Hot rod could hear Ultra Magnus’ intake opening for another sentence, so he didn’t give him the chance. “CHROMEDOME, if you would show the rest of Magnus’ crew around the base! Tailgate, get started on patching the holes in the base! BEACHCOMBER! Uh!” The small blue bot seemed to only tune in a few seconds after his name was called. “You…. Keep up the good work? GREAT! DISMISSED!”
Tailgate saluted quickly before rushing over to the exit, already calling a fleet of cleaning drones to follow behind him. Beachcomber strolled unhurriedly towards the enerspresso machine. The groups quickly began to shuffle towards one another.
Before Ultra Magnus could make another comment, Hot Rod trotted over to Perceptor and grabbed his arm. “GREAT to see you again buddy! You look good, you look fit, have you been working out? Let’s show you the lab huh?”
Without waiting for an answer, Hot Rod dragged the microscope out of the room and away from Magnus’ annoyingly chipper look.
>*<
Vortex wasn’t in his room. Judging by the state it was in, he had been there, but no longer. His stupid band posters were torn down, his bunk collapsed and flipped over. He had done as he always did, and ruined absolutely everything.
But if Vortex wasn’t in his room moping, he’d be moping just as annoyingly some other place. It just so happened that currently his moping place was in the gym room.
Some would say it was Onslaught’s gym room, but hey, who really cared who’s room it was right? Onslaught growled as he heard the sound of his punching bag being mangled in the room. Stupid little one liners like ‘you want a piece of me?’ Or ‘yeah, dats what I thought!’ Echoed out into the hallway.
Onslaught leaned on the doorway of the gym and sighed. Vortex was hovering, blades whirling fitfully and destructively as he punched and kicked at Onslaught’s punching bag. There were gouges in the floor and ceiling from his blades again. He had just gotten that fixed. Sitting in the corner, shockingly quiet, was Brawl.
“VORTEX.” Onslaught boomed. His scout dropped from his hover and whirled around to look at him, visor blazing.
Onslaught pinched his nasal ridge. 1…2…3… “What’d I tell you about the rotors in the gym.”
Vortex’s plating flared a bit, steam wicking off him. “Don’t remember!” He snapped. Even still his blades folded up plaintively behind him.
Onslaught’s engine revved again, anger barely tamped down. “Sure, yeah, just like you didn’t remember the coordinates I gave you?” He said, feigning sweetness in his tone.
Vortex’s faceplates went purple. “I WAS TWO DIGITS OFF- OUR BASES ARE LIKE FIVE INCHES APART WHAT THE HELL WAS I SUPPOSED TO DO!” He whipped back around to the punching bag, slamming his shin into it. His form was still bad. It always was no matter how much Onslaught coached him.
“You were supposed to double check it when you got up there before you brought it down. You were supposed to wait five minutes to be in the right position so you wouldn’t have to steer it.” Onslaught snarled out through his teeth, stalking over to him. “And you’re supposed to use the punching bag to work on your form, not take your little hissyfits out on them.”
Vortex stopped kicking and stood still with his arms quivering at his sides. He was still in the mood for a tantrum, but at least he knew when to quit it for five seconds. It wasn’t like he was really listening anyway, but even if he wasn’t listening, at least he wasn’t abusing Onslaught’s workout equipment. “I know you’re bored on missions, and I know that, to you, being bored is worse than being dismembered, but if you just do your fraggin job right, you don’t have to waste extra time bein bored while I explain how much you fragged up, you understand?”
Vortex clenched his fists, clearly wanting to keep boxing the hanging bag. “Or you could just let up on me for a second! I did what you told me to, all you said was take the thing down!”
“No, Tex, I said ‘Blast Off will take you up, wait for his signal from me, and then bring it down.’” Onslaught sighed.
Vortex shook even more. His vocalizer clicked, then popped, then reset, then let out a shriek. He flung himself forwards, slamming his fist against the pleather.
“Listen, you’re a…” Onslaught struggled for a second, choking around a compliment. “…fine team mate. You gotta listen through my entire fraggin order, or you’re gonna frag up again and be back at square one.”
“I DO LISTEN!!!” Vortex wailed. He was pummeling the punching bag again, wheeling his arms around in unpracticed, forceless blows that barely managed to shake the thing.
Onslaught put his hands on his hips, fixing his face in a mocking expression. “Yeah? You listen? That’s why when I said ‘keep the seekers from blowing up the enemy base or we’re slagged’, you spent half the time fightin whirl?”
“You coulda just told them to lay off, I didn't even need to be there!” Vortex scoffed.
“But I did tell them to lay off, numbskull, and they didn’t hear me because someone brought our entire comms transmission setup down.” He grabbed Vortex by the collar and yanked him back to face him. “You woulda known that if you LISTENED before taking off. That’s what I’m trying to say, TEX, you don’t listen, and its makin’ ME look bad.”
Vortex was quiet for a moment, arms flailing around as he tried to decide on which pose made him look the toughest while his toes were scraping for purchase at the floor. He decided on crossing his arms and tossing his head to the side as if trying his hardest to look aloof. “Well you wanna talk about ‘made you look bad’, how about Brawl!?” He threw his arm out to jab an accusatory digit at the slightly catatonic Combaticon. “If we’d just made nice we coulda been off this stupid planet by dinner and back to work!”
Onslaught’s optic twitched. “Great plan smart guy, didja forget the part where we only found out that was an option, after we blew up his ship?”
Vortex withered again. “...still Brawl’s fault.” He mumbled.
1…. 2… They really all just think he’s some fraggin idiot huh- 1. 2. 3. Onslaught dropped Vortex, letting him stagger on his feet. “Y’KNOW WHAT, YEAH, VORTEX, YOU’RE RIGHT, IT IS BRAWL’S FAULT!” He shouted, tone incredulous and mocking. “HEY BRAWL!?” He turned.
Brawl’s visor blinked on. Stiffly he turned his helm to Onslaught. “Yeah boss?” He muttered. It wouldn’t have been audible on anyone else, but with Brawl, even a mumble was at speaking volume.
“Didja hear me when I said not to fire the fusion cannon, pal?” Onslaught asked with venomous sweetness.
“U-uhh No boss! I couldn’t even hear ya over the seekers engines, I only heard the bit where you said fire!” Brawl scrambled up to his feet.
Onslaught smacked his own head, feigning surprise. “Huh, so if, say, Vortex had done what I told him to and gotten the seekers to hold fire and get back to base, you prolly coulda heard me, right?” Onslaught put his hands on his hips.
“Yeah, I would’ve, boss!” Brawl said, banging a fist on his chest. “You know I got you!”
“Thanks, Brawl, you just stay right there.” Onslaught instructed.
“Sure thing, Boss!”
Turning back to Vortex, who was now very embarrassedly looking away with his shoulders hunched, Onslaught leaned down to meet Vortex’s eyeline. “Now, pointin fingers and sayin who’s fault it ‘really’ is ain’t gonna fix what you broke, champ… so, I’m gonna ask you a question.” He reached forwards, grabbing Vortex’s face and wrenching his head around to meet his gaze. “Who’s gonna fix it for me?”
Onslaught could see the fight going on in Vortex’s head. He’d been around long enough to know that every obeyed order for absolutely anything that wasn’t wanton violence was a knock down drag out fight between Vortex’s common sense and desperate need for constant stimulation. This fight was uglier though, a clawing scratching catfight between Vortex’s pride and his need for this lecture to end.
Sometimes a fight like this only got figured out after Onslaught beat him into submission, gave him that visceral ache that he’d practically beg for when he got bored enough. Not this time though.
“... Me.” He muttered, clearly having weighed the option of opening his faceplate and spitting in Onslaught’s eye and found it’s result lacking.
“Good.” Onslaught beamed at him icily, patting his cheek. “Now I got a job for you two, and it’s simple enough that I think you can’t mess it up, so don’t prove me wrong.”
Brawl thumped forwards, coming to a stop and standing at attention as Onslaught spoke. Vortex slunk in beside him, markedly less stiff and more full of hate.
Shuffling around in his subspace, Onslaught produced the half finished scan of Ultra Magnus’ ship that Slipstream had procured. “So if they’re this far out, they’ve gotta have some form of long range comm, right?”
>*<
“So er… I see you’ve been uhm… busy since we last met?” Perceptor offered as Hot Rod continued to steer him around corners and down hallways.
“Oh no, no, not too busy. Haven’t become a stick in the mud yet, only running the least productive energon mine in the whole universe, hah!” Hot Rod smacked Perceptor on the back, laughing at his own joke(?).
Perceptor frowned a bit more, squinting questioningly at the other mech. Hot Rod just smiled back, his teeth grinding together in his intake. “... Right. And this ‘Brainstorm’, what has he been researching?” He asked. “This planet is very lush with organic life, we saw on our scans on the way down that there was an ocean within travelling distance!” Perceptor was practically hovering, fears momentarily forgotten in the face of glorious progress.
Hot Rod allowed himself a moment of smugness. As crap as the planet was for most things, if there was anything Perceptor found remarkable on it, he could at least play to that. “Hm? Oh yeah, it’s a pretty sweet setup. Beachcomber is our head researcher on that end of things, I think.” He thought for a moment, pursing his lips. “...Dunno what he’s working on if I’m honest. Think it was something about mollusks.”
*
Perceptor blinked for a moment, quietly opening his earlier conceived ‘List of Concerns about Hot Rod’ .txt file and adding another entry.
‘5. Captain Hot Rod does not know what his head biologist is studying.’
“And… Brainstorm?”
“I’m pretty sure he was still working on our new mining droids, if he finished those he still hasn’t told me.” Hot Rod shrugged. The Captain thought for a second, before perking up. “Oh yeah, but the last thing he finished was our Holo-Gen room-” He winced a bit. “But it was pretty close to the hangar… so it might be busted.”
‘5. Captain Hot Rod does not know what either of his scientists are doing (?)’
‘6. Questionable allocation of autobot supplies(?)’
Perceptor nodded understandingly. “Ah, so he’s more of an engineer?”
“Eh… he prefers inventor.” Hot Rod said, stopping his slow Perceptor-pushing to press the call button on the elevator. “I’ve never met anyone smarter than you, Percey, but Brainstorm? He gets pretty close. Genius. Some would say… mad genius? But uhh..” Hot Rod grimaced a little, optics going vague as if remembering something unpleasant. “... He’s a character! But not a…. Not an awful fella! Some of the best drones out there, we hardly have to lift a finger for the mine to run, but his interests… are more… um how about… eclectic? Is that the right word?”
Perceptor didn’t feel very confident, even if he still stepped into the elevator next to Hot Rod. “Eclectic sounds right, given the vagueness with which he’s described.” Perceptor smiled weakly. The elevator door slid shut, and pitifully scratchy jazz flowed out of the speakers as they rose towards Brainstorm’s lab.
“He likes to keep busy. He’s always working on something or other up there, whether it’s something I asked for or… whatever else? I can never really know.” Hot Rod shrugged again, lacing his fingers and leaning his head back into them. He peeked his optics over towards Perceptor. “This whole mess should keep you both pretty occupied.” He chuckled, but the laughter felt a little grim.
Perceptor sighed a little, offering a weary smile and a thumbs up. “We’ll figure it out, Captain.”
Hot Rod laughed again, almost startling Perceptor with his sudden chipper smile. “Bet your aft we will! I’ll just get your noggins joggin together and we’ll be outta here in no time at all.” He glanced up at the floor counter. Almost there.
“... Hot Rod, it’s good to see you again.” Perceptor said quietly offering a stiff smile as the doors to the elevator slid open.
*
Hot Rod opened his mouth to reply, but as he did, a loud thud sounded from just down the hallway. He wilted a little. From the wail that followed it, Hot Rod could tell this first introduction was not going to be on the right foot. Perceptor regarded him with a look similar to a cyber-rat in a gluetrap, but Hot Rod lead him out of the elevator all the same.
“How about I go check on him first huh? You hang back here.” The captain forced a smile and gave him a thumbs up, then scampered down the hall to the source of the shouting.
“-YEARS! HOW COULD IT BE OVERRRR!!!” Brainstorm caterwalled.
The laboratory was trashed. Experiments were strewn across the floor, plans torn up and tossed like confetti, work tables flipped. And there Brainstorm was, in the midst of it all, hands clawing at his helm as he paced back and forth.
“ITS A WASTE ITS ALL A WASTE!!! DAMN YOU!!!” He kicked his stool across the room, where it rolled to a pitiful stop near Hot Rod’s leg. He suddenly whipped around and snatched up a wrench, whirling around to throw it when he noticed the captain’s presence. As if a switch was flipped, his rage simmered down into a barely contained bubble, masked over with false pleasantry. “Captain! So good to see you!”
Hot Rod blinked, swallowing thickly. “Hey, Brainstorm! So!” He glanced around. “Bit of post war remodeling?”
Brainstorm’s wings hiked up on his back. The low whine of jet engines powering on then off echoed in the high ceilinged room. “Oh just. Adjusting to the good news!” He gritted out.
“It is good news!” Hot Rod agreed, lyingly.
Brainstorm was shaking a bit. “Perfect news! Even! Fantastic and wonderful and-“ he turned around to regard the stack of blueprints that remained, “and marvelous- and- and-“ he gripped the first few papers off of the pile and began to tear them in half. “LIFE RUINING AND CAREER ENDING-“
“Now now! Let’s relax here, I’m sure you could find something else to work on, right pal?” Hot Rod offered, bringing his hands up. “Weapons are a specialty, not the only thing you can do right?”
Brainstorm warbled pitifully, falling into his chair. “BUT I DON’T WANT TO MAKE MACHINES!!! ANYONE CAN MAKE A MACHINE- DO YOU EVEN THINK THE INTRICACIES OF A GUN- DO YOU- DO YOU EVEN CARE ABOUT IT WHEN YOU PULL THE TRIGGER!!! I DO!! I’VE THOUGHT ABOUT IT!!”
Hot Rod sighed and rolled his eyes. “No, Brainstorm, I don’t think about that.”
The jet lounged over his chair dramatically. “Of course you didn’t… nobody respects the work of an artiste. You know back in my studies-“
“‘Back in your studies you were the top of your class six semesters in a row’ yes, I do know.”
Brainstorm tucked his hands under his chin, grinning with his eyes. “At least you remember what’s important, captain.”
Hot Rod grimaced an unconvincing smile and tapped his forehelm. “You know me.” He stood in the uncomfortable silence for a moment before clearing his throat. “So- not to put a new thing on your plate, champ, but the new folks need a new lab space-“
“ARE YOU KICKING ME OUT!!?” Brainstorm shrieked.
“NO!!!!” Hot Rod shouted back, resisting the urge to cover his audials. “NO, Brainstorm, I’m asking you to make a little room!!!” He swept his arms out at the mess of a lab.
“Ah yes well that would make sense.” Brainstorm smiled, popping up to his pedes. He trotted over to a small wheely table and shoved the flayed entrails of a project off it. “There. That should be enough!”
Hot Rod frowned meaningfully. Brainstorm beamed with malice. “… I’ll go get your new lab partner.”
“Take all the time you need! An eternity even! I don’t need a partner, and it’s insulting that you’d think another scientist would be any use at all! I could solve this with my eyes closed and you know it!” Brainstorm crowed after him.
Hot Rod’s engine rumbled. Stupid poindexter. He groused internally.
While it was unsurprising that Perceptor was grimacing when Hot Rod turned the corner, it still wasn’t ideal. The microscope took a half step back towards the elevator, fixing his face into an appropriately apologetic look. “Really, Hot Rod, it’s completely fine, I could just- er- I could set up in a spare room!” He offered.
Hot Rod continued to advance, plastering on an unconvincing smile. “Oh come on, it’s totally fine! There’s plenty of space, really, he’s just a bit messy, that's all!”
“I really wouldn’t want to impose-!” Perceptor added, his hand pawing around for the elevator’s call button.
Hot Rod took his hand in both of his own. “It wouldn’t be an imposition at all!”
“I-I really shouldn’t-” Perceptor tried one more feeble time, but Hot Rod had already begun to drag him.
“There’s no I in team, Percey, but there’s two in ‘Finding us a Way Home’! I need my best hands on deck for this or we’re gonna be stuck here.”
Perceptor seemed to go distant for a moment, like he was writing something in his HUD. Then he sighed heavily and followed Hot Rod down the hallway.
The captain once again stood at the entrance to Brainstorm’s lab, now with Perceptor in tow. “While I appreciate the need for a laboratory, I’m afraid this one is quite occupied!” Brainstorm, who had been proudly sulking in a wheely chair at the center of his radius of destruction, languidly spun around to face the two of them. “I’m sure you’ve had a rough day, so you can rest easy knowing that I don’t need any of your ‘help’, and put your feet up while a real genius-” He stopped, optics widening.
Hot Rod pounced on the silence. “Brainstorm, this is Perceptor, he’s the autobot’s head of STEM, he’s-”
“The second smartest mechanoid to ever be constructed?” Brainstorm whispered reverently.
Perceptor blinked. “Second?”
“Ah good, so you know each other?” Hot Rod said.
Perceptor chuckled confusedly, “I mean we haven’t met-”
“WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY IT WAS PERCEPTOR!?” Brainstorm boomed elatedly. The jet shot across the room in a whirlwind of torn up blueprints, grabbing Perceptor’s hand and shaking it hard enough to jostle his entire frame. “Perceptor, oh my goodness, it is such an honour, an absolute treat, a complete joy to meet you, sir! Your writing on organic life, while not my personal area of interest, is SENSATIONAL! AND- ahaha- your work with the central camian collegiate on Mechaneuro Drone Linkups- I’d have it carved onto the inside of my helm if I could!” He laughed giddily, still shaking Perceptor’s hand like it owed him money. “What serendipity! If I believed in any of that spectralist nonsense, I’d say it was fate that you made it out here! Terribly unlucky for you, I’d ask what cosmic entities you’d made so angry, if ANY OF THAT ILLOGICAL GARBAGE WERE REAL, AHAAHAHAHAAAA!!!!”
To Brainstorm, that must have been completely hilarious, but the other two mechs lagged behind with their halfhearted laughter. Hot Rod was certain that if the jet had a mouth, Perceptor would be completely drenched in spittle at this point.
Perceptor’s vocalizer bleeped and skipped for a moment as he struggled to respond around all the shaking. He brought his other hand up, grabbing onto the larger mech’s servo and bringing it to a stop. “Ah-ahaha- oh my! Thats uh- thank you!” He stammered, glancing at Hot Rod with terror in his optics.
Hot Rod just gave him a big thumbs up, as unhelpful as usual, and began to step out of the room.
Brainstorm beamed with his eyes, releasing Perceptor’s hand and clasping his together over his chest. “Your work already laid so much of the groundwork for my creations here, it’s like you’ve already been my lab assistant this whole time!”
Perceptor frowned, rubbing his slightly dented servo. “Your assistant-?”
“We can iron out labels for roles later, partner, we’ve got work to do!” Brainstorm gasped. “And a whole lab to tour!!! Oh- OH, Percey- Can I call you percey?- I have SO MUCH to show you!!” He squealed in excitement, grabbing Perceptor’s hand again and dragging him deeper into his lab. “We are going to do great things together, Percey, I can already tell!!”
Perceptor looked helplessly over his shoulder at Hot Rod one final time. The captain just saluted at him with a beaming smile, and disappeared down the hallway.

“So- er- in your expert opinion… like… scale of one to ten, how bad would you say the wreck is?”
Well, with the reactor essentially vaporized, and most of the thrusters scuttled, and a giant hole in the back half of the ship with fire still flickering around it? Nautica could safely say she had never seen a ‘wreck’ look any worse than this.
“Um! Well! Being optimistic, how about a solid 7.3?” She offered as Swerve peered hopefully up at her.
“Hey, Swerve, check this out.” Whirl snickered, slapping the minibot’s arm with a still steaming hot bundle of melting wires. Swerve shrieked and grabbed his arm, scrubbing at the quickly cooling rubber that threatened to peel his paint if it stuck too long.
Nautica hummed, sweeping her headlamp over another portion of dented hallway while her companions began to argue back and forth. She’d been on this mission long enough to see the extent of the stircraziness colony bots had to endure, she couldn’t blame them for bickering. She only wondered how long it’d take for her to start acting the same way.
Swerve fell into step beside her, still picking melted rubber off his arm. “7.3 ain’t bad though, yeah?”
Nautica offered him an unconfident grimace. “Uhhh… sure! I mean like- in this state- the ship isn’t gonna fly again- but!” She put her hands up seeing his hope fading, “hey! Plenty of salvageable parts for a new one! We’ll get things figured out, promise.”
Whirl leaned his head down between the two of them. “We’re going to be stuck here.”
Nautica shrugged. “For a while, yeah, I suppose.”
“When it comes down to it, we can cannibalize Magnus first. He’s got the most usable minerals to keep us from dying of malnutrition.” The helicopter added cheerily.
Swerve stepped a little closer to Nautica, boxing Whirl out from between them. “Don’t listen to him, he’s just trying to freak you out!” He said, notably freaked out.
Nautica scoffed a little. “I’m not freaked out-“
“I’m not trying to freak her out. Do you think I just say things for fun? You think talk is cheap? I charge by the word, y’know.” Whirl sneered.
Nautica ducked under a hanging ceiling panel. “Besides, you, are right, Magnus would be a good pick. Every morning he adds about half a dozen mineral supplements to his energon, you’ll see him do it.”
Swerve groaned. “Ugh, I thought he might… I swear, old models say they need the minerals for their armour, but it’s really just nostalgia for the pre refinement days when you could just stick your hand in the canals and suck up pure primal silt.” He gagged, “see, me? I could shake up a mixjon that’ll blow the paint right off any geezer still suckin down ener-sand.”
Nautica laughed, smacking a hand over her mouth. “Oh yeah, good luck getting him to drink it.”
Swerve sighed, “Tee-totaler?”
Nautica nodded. “He’s odd about nutrition, too. He says the-“
Whirl suddenly shushed the two of them, a claw coming down each of their heads.
From deeper into the ship there echoed the distant but immediately recognizable sound of a laser cutter buzzing and crackling through something. Nautica clutched her wrench a little tighter, ready to swing. Whirl’s posture had shifted, now more hunched and low. Swerve conveniently lagged behind to let the other two investigate… at a slightly safer distance.
The group plodded forward quietly with Whirl now taking the lead. Despite the tenseness of the situation, Nautica noticed his tail propellor was spinning up and cooling down repeatedly, as if he was eager for a fight.
It didn’t take long to arrive at the source of the noise. Unsurprisingly, it was also their original destination, the command deck of the ship. Through the half busted down double doors Nautica caught a glimpse of two of the gaudily painted cons from before, but she was only able to observe them for a moment before Whirl screamed and threw himself across the deck at one of them. The two bots- both helicopters judging by their blades- tumbled down a short staircase in a flurry of clangs and bleeps and cursing. The remaining decepticon, Brawl, belatedly glanced up from the datapad and after his partner, then swung his helm around to the other two bots.
The autobots froze under his gaze like deer in the middle of the interstate. Nautica’s foggy memories from basic training floated up belatedly from the bottom of her processor. She fumbled her nigh forgotten sidearm out of her holster and brandished it out in front of her at the con.
“Which bit is the comms array?” Swerve whimpered out.
“Opposite the one they’re going for-” She hissed back, nearly jumping out of her plating as Brawl began to lumber towards her with malicious intent. His footsteps boomed and shook the bridge, bouncing the two struggling helicopters like they were on a trampoline.
Swerve scrambled over to the comms array without a second thought. Nautica kept her eyes locked on Brawl, shuffling backwards to cover Swerve’s mad dash. Wait- why was she covering him?
Before she could figure that out, Brawl swung an oil drum sized fist at her. Nautica yelped and ducked, feeling her back rotor get clipped by his punch. Adrenaline clogging her logic codes, she reeled back upwards to kick him, only to drive her head directly up into his chin. The two of them both staggered backwards holding their helms.
“SWERVE PULL THE MAINTENANCE LEVER!” Nautica bellowed, clumsily pointing her blaster out at the decepticon and firing. The beam connected with his side, and instead of rending half his vital mechanisms, it just disappeared. The decepticon made an almost indignant noise, like he’d been hit by a stray dodgeball. Nautica glanced at her blaster. Stun mode. Scraplets.
“THAT FRAGGING ITCHES, AUTO- AUTO… AUTOSLAGGER!” The decepticon roared, seeming insecure of his poor wordplay.
“WHICH IS THE MAINTENANCE LEVER!!?” Swerve bleeped, pawing at the module.
Clumsily, Nautica swapped the blaster from stun to lethal. With a squawk of victory against the stupid thing, the engineer swept her arm up to take a shot, only to receive a knee to the torso that sent her flying back into the wall.
Swerve shrieked, whirling around to put his body between Brawl and the comms module. Nautica groaned and dragged herself out of the wreckage. Nothing broken? Oh- nope that propeller was RUINED- ow- Now sufficiently fed up, Nautica slammed her blaster into Swerve’s hands.
“Nautica- oh- primus- you really don’t want me to do that, its a bad idea-!” Swerve wheedled.
Nautica ignored him, reaching up and grabbing hold of the bright red lever clearly marked ‘MAINTENANCE LEVER’. She twisted, then pulled the lever up with a loud clunk. The mechanism of the comms array slid out a ways, now unmoored from the wall. “YES! Now we just need to get out of-!”
Several things happened at once then.
Now up off the floor and flying through the air, Whirl and Vortex shot across the bridge like a bullet. They did so with a force such that they punched directly through the small balcony on which the rest of the bots were located. As the two of them caused massive unfixable structural damage to the aforementioned balcony, Brawl was lurching forwards with a punch that was likely to completely crumple Swerve’s body like an accordion. The minibot screamed and pulled the trigger of his blaster haphazardly aimed at some indiscernible portion of the blur that was Brawl.
Brawl’s foot went through a destabilized portion of floor just as Whirl and Vortex’s helms exited it, smashing the two of them back down like a pair of whackamoles. Brawl tripped forwards and Swerve’s shot missed, pinging off a loose panel, then off of Ultra Magnus’ perfectly polished chair back. Somehow, it ricocheted off a steam pipe which popped loose and poured thick white steam throughout the space, and then sank into a fire extinguisher located directly next to the comms array, which exploded into a mess of thick white foam.
In the now obscured bridge, Nautica winced as she heard Brawl, Vortex, and Whirl slam into the ground with a massive thud. Dragging the now foam flecked comms array out and fastening it to Swerve’s back lift, she had no time to waste pawing around in the steam, so she shouted, “WHIRL WE’RE GETTING OUT OF HERE COME ON LETS GO!!” and began to scramble towards the exit.
Somewhere in the steam, she could hear them wrestling, then the sound of Brawl howling out in pain, followed swiftly by the front window of the ship smashing out as someone was thrown through it. Nautica couldn’t have checked if she tried. She was already focusing on trying not to vomit from the pulsating pain in her propeller, and dragging Swerve’s blubbering, apologizing aft to safety.
“I-I told you- im not good with guns they just don’t- I can’t get the hang of- I just-”
Nautica tuned him out. One foot in front of the other. Finally she was out of the steam cloud and could see the hallway hatch out. Daylight poured out over the two of them as she escaped, but she didn’t stop. Adrenaline propelled her forwards with Swerve in tow, and she wouldn’t stop running until finally she reached the Autobot base.
It was only after she staggered inside that she finally crashed. Her knees buckled under her. Energon was leaking down her back and leg in a stream, and her body was making her completely aware of how upset it was at that fact. She shoved that aside again, spinning Swerve around so she could get a better look at the module strapped to his back. There was foam everywhere. She hesitantly reached forwards, cradling the sparking, miserable remnants of her poor comms array. Maybe not unsalvageable… but it could be weeks before repairs were finished.
“...”
And then she finally threw up.

Captain’s Log, Cycle 174 of Kilocycle 845,206, Captain Hot Rod Recording… Again.
“Y’know they say that leadership is about making the best of a bad situation. And of all the bad situations I’ve been in, while this might be the worst-... [a calculating moment] uh! It’s not as if i can’t handle it! I’m exactly the man for the job. I’d say I presently AM handling it. It being the situation of course. Of course.
… So Brainstorm is sharing his lab, Perceptor was an easy sell, I don’t think he’s even realized Nautica is a part of that equation yet, but we’ll work it out. Got our comms module! Big win! But… Swerve did kind of wreck most of it… and Nautica got injured, BUT NOT FATALLY! I’d say a pretty decent success, considering we got what we needed, Whirl only was MIA for like 30 minutes, and-”
A loud thudding on the door shook Hot Rod from his logging. “I’m a bit busy-”
“This is Admiral Ultra Magnus.” The other bot boomed. “You and I should talk.”
Hot Rod wilted a bit. He turned off the recording and opened the door, as asked, putting on a confident air. “And what can I help you with, Magnus?”
The massive bot squeezed into the room, worry and disappointment clear on his face. Hot rod swallowed thickly. “I’ve taken exception with several aspects of your performance today, Captain.” Ultra Magnus said gravely.
Hot Rod frowned a bit. “Listen, things are still getting settled here, you all have just got here, I’m sure you can understand that I’m as frazzled as you are right now! I’m not at my A-Game today-”
“A-Game? Captain this is NOT a game!” Ultra Magnus Balked. “One of the soldiers you sent to guard Nautica left his post immediately, and the other doesn’t know how to fire a gun?!”
Hot Rod chuckled a bit. “Honestly we’re lucky Whirl came back at all-“
“THIS ISN’T A JOKE, HOT ROD.” Ultra Magnus boomed, making Hot Rod shrink. “Nautica was injured. You should have considered the possibilities fully before acting! I gave you the benefit of the doubt-“ Ultra Magnus sighed. “Primus preserve me… look, Hot Rod. I recognize that today may have been a bad time for a first impression, but please, PLEASE, do not disappoint me like this again.”
Hot Rod clenched his fists, staring at the ground. Shame roiled in his tanks. His whole body felt hot and angry, palms itchy like he wanted to lash out and hit him. He didn’t know what it was like to work with this team. It wasn’t HIS fault they were incompetent! It wasn’t HIS fault he was stuck here in the middle of nowhere stuck with a bunch of nobodies!
“Yes sir. It won’t happen again sir.”
You’ll fragging see.

“YOU GOT THE WRONG THING?!” Onslaught boomed. “AFTER ALL THAT, AFTER I GAVE YOU A FRAGGING CHANCE, YOU MESS UP YOUR LEFTS AND FRAGGING RIGHTS?”
Brawl was shamefully staring at his pedes, as penitent as he should be. But vortex was quivering with rage in front of him. His rotors were shaking, twitching back and forth on his back. “I'm SORRY OKAY, I'M FRAGGING SORRY!!! I’M JUST SUCH A FRAGGING IDIOT WHO DOESNT KNOW SLAG FROM SCRAP!! IS THAT WHAT YOU WANNA HEAR??” He shrieked.
Onslaught’s engine roared and vibrated in his chassis. “YOU DON’T TALK TO ME LIKE THAT, FRAGGER! YOU AIN’T GOT THE RIGHT!”
“OH I DON’T DO I? SURE SURE, YOU’RE THE ONE WHO THOUGHT THE BOTS WOULDN’T BE THERE!! DIDNT THINK ABOUT THAT DID YA!” Vortex spat back, starting to hover off the ground. His rotor drew an arc through the ceiling of the room, and Onslaught snapped. The larger con shot an arm forward, grabbing Vortex by the neck kibble and shaking him like a ragdoll.
“OF COURSE I FRAGGIN DID WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK BRAWL’S THERE FOR YOU PRICK?!” Onslaught bellowed.
Vortex warbled for a moment, visor gleaming with a chance for violence. Onslaught was unwilling to give him the chance. He threw him through the open doorway into the hall.
“GET THE PIT OUT OF MY SIGHT, BOTH OF YOU, OUT!!!” He shouted. Brawl was quick to rush off, gathering vortex up in his meaty arm before the helicopter could fly back in for a more physical fight.
Onslaught stood there, his playing steaming from anger. His engine rattled as his fans sucked in cold air. 1… 2… 3… 4… 5… The venting exercises weren’t working like Blast Off said they would. He shook his head, then shouted again, slamming a fist into his office wall with a loud crunch.
Anger now semi-successfully channeled, Onslaught stormed out of his office rounding the corner directly into Deadlock. The con had been wandering aimlessly around the base all day like a zombie, eyes wide and buggy like he’d never seen on the worthless little prettyboy. Just onslaughts luck that on a day he thought the fucker was finally able to shut up he just had to come to bitch at him. “AND JUST WHAT THE PIT DO YOU WANT, HUH?!” Onslaught barked
The gunslinger nearly jumped out of his plating. “What-?! I was just-“
“I DONT GIVE A SCRAP, GET OUT OF MY WAY!” Onslaught snapped, shoving the smaller mech out of the way. Deadlock just blinked in bewilderment at the entire situation.
Onslaught continued to stomp down the hallway, until finally he found an exit to the higher floor’s fire escape. Pawing around in his subspace, he grabbed a box of cygarettes and flicked the lid open. Cyg successfully nabbed, he opened his battle mask and placed it between his lips. He flicked the cover off the mod in his ring digit and turned on the tiny burner at the end, sparking up the cyg and taking a long drag.
Smoke billowed from his lips and off into a cool darkening night sky.
We’re never getting off this stupid planet.
Concept: the entire Transformers franchise is one giant time loop. Every new iteration is another attempt to get it right and avert the Great War.
I wrote an entire one shot specifically for this ask. Enjoy.
Aversion at its Finest
Primus has never been pleased with the fact that his creations always go to war with each other. Thus, in an attempt to keep the Cybertronian civil war from occurring, he has chosen to periodically rebuild reality and try again with the help of his chosen. Unfortunately for Optimus, Primus is learning the ropes just as much as he is, and until they both get it right, neither can rest.
━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙ ━━━━━━━━━━━━
The skies were thick with smog. Fires burned in the distance, but only their crackling filled the void. There were no more cries. No more moans of pain or the curses of the most hardened warriors of both sides. All was quiet. Everything was gone… save for Optimus and his foe.
The hole in his chassis burned. He could feel his frame shutting down as he lay in the ash, his limbs useless now that he had no enemy to fell or weapon to hold. He would have liked to see the stars as it all came to an end, especially since he was not surrounded by friends and family as he had been during his first death. Yet, he didn’t dare turn his gaze away from the blackened skies. If he did, he knew all he would see was Rodimus’s body stabbed through with dozens of pieces of rebar and Elita torn limb from limb.
Both had fought so very hard for him. Trying desperately to buy him just a little more time. If they had only had the chance to activate the space bridge, maybe they could have brought their species to its bitter end on their homeworld rather than dragging Earth down with them. As it was… this was to be the end. The end of everything. No more games. No more laughter.
Only silence.
“We had a good run, didn’t we, Prime?” Megatron spoke up, his voice as deep and grating as ever. There was a faint tremor to it, the barest inklings of fear that threatened to peek through the persona of madness he usually wore. After so many millennia of fighting the mech, Optimus could tell that he was seeking companionship, even now as they lay waiting for their respective ends.
“Yes we did, Megatron.” Optimus replied just as faintly, his right optic flickering just enough to annoy him even with the pain of death creeping at the edges of his every waking thought. He kept his optics on the sky, not wanting to see the devastation. At least the black above was without blemish. It was solid, not filled with horrors. Merely the echoes of them.
How had it all come to this? Cybertron was restored. Their people were thriving. Optimus and Rodimus were ruling together and Galvatron left for the stars? Just how had it all gone so wrong?
A renewed war.
A plague of hate.
The Quintessons and their creations.
Unicron’s wrath.
So many little things… all of it leading them right back to where they started. War and violence, pain and anguish… without a hint of hope to be found. When had Optimus heard any of his soldiers laugh? It had to have been centuries.
“Rodimus was a poor replacement. I never did get the same thrill fighting him.” Megatron chuckled and Optimus had to fight the urge to work up the strength to throttle him to death for it. Even now as everything they could have possibly worked toward lay burning to ash, his foe was still laughing about it all. Like it was some grand game.
“He was never meant for war, and you were hardly yourself when you were Galvatron.” Optimus was unable to stop the hint of bitterness that entered his tone. Rodimus had not asked for the burden. He never deserved such an end.
“Very true.” Megatron responded with a faint huff that died down soon enough.
Silence consumed the battlefield for a while. Perhaps it was mere minutes. Or maybe it went on for years. Time meant nothing now. But eventually, as if to spite him one final time, Megatron opened his mouth again.
“You were a good rival, Optimus. Always taking me by surprise.” The comment briefly took Optimus by surprise. But the cold was already settling into frame, making his processor slow and his reactions more controlled. He said nothing, opting instead to observe the skies as he had since he fell.
“I’m going to miss this.” Megatron’s faint wish rang in his audials. Optimus acknowledged it with a soft hum, his final offer of amiability considering the circumstances. As much as a small part of him screamed that he should let Megatron suffer at the end of it all, the rest of his spark could not handle that idea. They were dying anyway. Might as well do so in relative comfort.
So many millennia of conflict… Why had they battled at all? Megatron was a power hungry villain, yes. But how did it reach that point? Why did Megatron attack him and his friends at the docks? Why had Megatron risen to power at all?
Why had it turned out this way?
His processor ached as he thought back, dredging up ancient memory and finding nothing. Had there even been a point?
“Why were we fighting to begin with? Why did you choose to do all of this?” Optimus found the question escaping his vocalizer before he could stop it. Against his better judgement, he looked over at Megatron and saw his foe grinning, but not meeting his gaze. The beam stuck in Megatron’s abdomen left him spitting up energon as he cackled.
“Come now Prime. You should know the answer to this.” Megatron’s optics blazed between flickers, his servo reaching up toward the sky as if to grasp at some invisible goal. Optimus wondered what the answer would be. Glory? Some strange ideal that he’d never seen fit to share? Perhaps to avenge a long dead loved one?
“Power of course.”
Ah.
He should have known better.
“But why? You were a state of the art model. You had the whole world in front of you, and instead you chose to burn it all down.” Anger and despair boiled in Optimus’s very core. All this death had been for some twisted power fantasy? At least if it had been due to some old rivalry or goal Optimus could have died with an answer.
By the stars… what a life he’d lived.
“I’ve forgotten.” Megatron’s response to his anguished question came soft and oddly thoughtful. Yet, Optimus could only respond with a grim scoff, a sound he hadn’t made since he was Orion Pax.
“You’ve forgotten why you killed millions?”
“You act as though you haven’t slaughtered thousands yourself.” Megatron shot back with a vicious retort before laughing. If Optimus were capable of shaking in rage, he would have. But his frame was weakening, his systems failing faster now. He simply didn’t have the energy.
“Does it really matter, Prime? Today we die. So shut up and do it with a bit of grace.” Optimus’s optic twitched in agitation. Megatron was one to talk when all he’d done was screech at Starscream and Soundwave the times he lay on death’s door.
“Never would have taken you to be a mech to go down quietly.” Optimus snarked as he sensed the Matrix going quiet. That was his sign to hurry up with his final will and testament if he’d had anyone aside from the glitch next to him to express his thoughts to.
“Normally, I wouldn’t. But I dragged you down with me, didn’t I? Ripped your Autobots apart and blasted you half to pieces.” Oh for the good of Vector Sigma-
Optimus’s optic twitched again, anger bubbling so hotly that if he’d had even the barest inkling of strength left he would have gotten up and shut Megatron up himself, mercy forgotten. As it stood, all he could do was clench his fist and rage internally.
“You are the worst.” His bitter remark was met with a laugh, one he didn’t bother responding to. Not even a few minutes later, the faint sounds of Megatron’s venting vanished, leaving Optimus alone with his fate. A bitter part of his processor cursed at his old foe for being selfish yet again and dying before Optimus could. But most of his spark was simply weary.
Anger faded into sorrow and lamentation. Strength slipped right through his digits and the only comfort Optimus had in his final moments were the memories of better times. Even those did little to ease him as his venting grew harsher.
It wouldn’t be long now.
“Elita… what would you think of this madness?” Optimus coughed weakly, an instinctual response to try and clear his soot filled vents. He knew it was useless, especially as his processor started furiously running through every memory file it had access to.
He saw his soldiers in their final moments. He saw the war at its worst and the peace Rodimus brought. He saw his first clash with Megatron after his reformat. But most importantly to him, he saw Ariel’s fair face smiling at him as she guided Orion Pax along the docks for one of their usual dates. He felt her derma against his as they danced under the moonlight, and with that memory held close, all was right with the world.
It was a pleasant vision, one Optimus clung to as his optics shut down and the rest of his frame quickly followed suit. But instead of the Allspark greeting him, Optimus found himself in a void. Formless and alone.
He had no idea how long he spent there or if it even mattered. But eventually, as thought and consciousness grew less important, a voice rang out.
“So much death…”
The chorus-like nature of the voice washed over Optimus in waves, reviving memories that had gone dormant and bringing him back to full awareness. He could not identify where the song came from or if it came from anywhere at all. All he knew was that it was powerful and demanded respect he knew not how to give.
“You were all such innocent children. It should not have come to this.”
Children? Strange.
“We will try again. We will make this right.”
What was that supposed to mean? He died. That was it. He was one with the Allspark once more. Wasn’t he?
“Who’s there? What’s going on?” He tried to ask questions, but his voice felt like a faint wisp in the wind compared to the power of the entity which spoke as if the whole universe hung in its grasp.
“Hush now. Rest while you can. Your duty is not yet done.”
Optimus’s vision was flooded with images of things he could hardly comprehend. War. Death. Fire and brutal combat. The forms of the fighters changed, sometimes thick and sometimes spindly. But through it all, there was one figure Optimus knew by spark. Gunmetal gray and built for war, he knew the frame of his foe without even having to think about it. With his blaster raised to the sky and a roar bubbling in his vocalizer, Optimus understood what was being asked of him.
The battle was not yet over. He didn’t know how or why, but Megatron was out there, and he had to be stopped. That was the only possible conclusion Optimus could come to.
“How long must I fight?”
“Till All Are One.”
And then everything faded away once more.
----
Optimus came online slowly, memory washing over him in an overpowering wave that left him shaking on whatever berth he was laid out on. There was much to sort through, but the first thing he remembered was his current identity.
He was Optimus Prime, brought to life using a protoform and trained at the Academy to serve the Autobots and guard Cybertron against their greatest foes, the Decepticons. He was raised under the belief that the war was over and that his programming defined his reality. However, he fought against both of these concepts and strove to be something more, a hero of all things.
He had friends during training. Elita-One and Sentinel. Both betrayed him, although at different times and with varying justification. Cast aside for his ‘crimes’, Optimus was allowed to keep the rank of Prime, a position that came close to equaling that of General rather than supreme ruler of the people. From there he was all but demoted and supplied with a crew to repair space bridges.
It was a simple life, but ambition and one unfortunate crash led them to Earth. Megatron and his Decepticons remerged. He made friends, growing close to his team who were so similar and yet so different all at once. He did not know a Bulkhead until now, or a Sentinel for that matter. But Bumblebee, Ratchet, and Elita? They sparked recognition in him.
Slag, his processors hurt.
“Bossbot! You alright?” A far too excitable voice prompted Optimus to unshutter his optics, coming online fully with a groan. He sat up slowly, rubbing his face and trying to comprehend his reality as he began to recall more. Looking at the bot who called him, Optimus logically knew him as Bumblebee. But half his processor screamed at him that Bumblebee looked and acted differently. Boxier, more mature in some regards, and yet playful all the same.
This Bumblebee was his, but he was wrong. All so very wrong.
“Bumblebee? What… happened?” Optimus’s optics tried to calibrate, but there was something off about it. These optics were a little different from the ones he knew. Where was his battlemask? Why was he so… lanky?
No. He was always lanky. The memories… they were not his.
“You were holding the Allspark and got a bit too close.” Ratchet put a servo on his shoulder, stunning Optimus as he stared at the medic. Slag, he was ancient. His records stated he was old, but contradicting memory indicated that Ratchet was meant to at least act a bit younger with humor and laughter. What the frag happened?
“It knocked you flat on your aft!” Bumblebee laughed, and that much at least was familiar. Optimus touched his chassis, feeling his spark pulse within as memory settled. Ancient and now useless protocols faded away to make room for data he could actually use.
“I… yes. I remember.” He was a dock worker once. Orion Pax was his name. He was shot. He was reforged. He claimed a relic his current reality did not know until the Allspark was placed within it. He fought against his enemy, Megatron. He went on adventures, made friends.
Then he lay in ash and ruin, his world shattered.
“I died.” His voice came out softer than intended as Optimus looked down at his servos. They were not covered in scars like his old ones. They did not reek of plasma, nor did his body ache with familiar pains from centuries of hastily tended wounds. He was young, and now he had wisdom.
“Yeah, but that was forever ago back on Earth!” Bumblebee tapped his arm lightly, but Optimus hardly reacted. It was difficult having two personalities settle, but purpose guided him. The voice in the void ordered that he fight Megatron. Did he have to obey?
Looking at his team, his friends… Optimus found himself leaning into the order regardless of the validity of the voice and its authority. The wisdom of the Prime he once was, or at least the Prime that existed in another time and place, would aid him in saving his own people and saving them that same fate.
He was Optimus Prime, and his mission was to stop Megatron at all costs.
“His processor is scrambled.” Bulkhead gestured nervously, earning a huff from Ratchet who began taking scans. Optimus paid him no mind, instead standing up and squaring his shoulders. The joy of his first existence was more subdued now, calmed by reawakening and determination.
“Where is Megatron?” The question came sharply, more so than Optimus intended. His voice shook as he attempted to speak with a vibrato he no longer possessed. His friends looked at him strangely, and Ratchet took the chance to quietly begin assessing his frame. Optimus allowed it, his focus elsewhere.
“In prison. We brought him back to Cybertron, remember?” Bulkhead informed politely, only earning a low hum from Optimus as he considered. Megatron was defeated. So why had the voice done this and ordered that he fight? He’d won, hadn’t he? Surely there was something missing… Perhaps another Decepticon? A Galvatron in the making? Or was Unicron the threat?
“And the rest of the Decepticons?” He could feel his spark sinking in his chassis as he considered the possibilities. If so much as Starscream managed to get away-
“Unaccounted for.” Frag.
Optimus cursed under his breath, a habit that his prior self would have never approved of. He crossed his arms, thinking and reviewing memory for a long moment until something stuck out.
Tender touches shared in the dark. First with Elita-One, and then with another. A blue visor that shone in the moonlight, the simple pleasure of digits laced together. A soothing voice and dozens of hours spent in meditation he never quite understood but engaged in anyway for the sake of companionship. The adoring glances exchanged when the others were deep in recharge or otherwise engaged…
“What about Prowl?” His spark knew the truth, as did his processor. But some small fragment of Optimus’s being needed confirmation.
“He fell in the final battle.” Ratchet’s words hit harder than expected, and Optimus couldn’t help but sit back down with a sigh.
It was never official. What he shared with Prowl was a simple companionship that walked the line between something deeper and mere brotherhood. They never used words to describe themselves because such labels were dangerous. They both claimed it would hurt more that way. And yet, as Optimus reviewed his memories of their intimate moments shared when no one was looking, he felt nothing but grief. No one knew what they had. None would understand.
It was like leaving Elita-One on Cybertron all over again. The ache would never fully fade, but it was dulled by the memories of his prior existence which diluted his affections, spreading them out over others who he had not even met in his current reality.
“I see…” Optimus took a moment to sit in silence, a grace period that even the likes of Bumblebee respected. Memory supplied him with countless battles, and from the experiences of his prior self, he had a feeling that he’d already come too late to stop what was brewing. His memory would do little when the Decepticons were already a fully trained, highly organized militia. There was no stopping it now.
“This… is not going to end well.” Optimus’s words were hardly a whisper, but they felt dooming.
His declaration turned out to be entirely correct as time wore on.
The Autobot empire fell apart in brutal fashion, with Ultra Magnus dying and Sentinel Magnus making a fragging mess out of everything. Optimus raised a militia of his own with the help of his other self’s memory, but by the time he had his people in line and Sentinel in prison, war was already upon them. Megatron matched the vision the voice shared as he burned their cities and killed their warriors. Optimus fought as well as he could, but this Megatron was far more cunning that the one his prior self knew. Not quite as vicious perhaps, but highly intelligent.
One battle after another, and Optimus watched history repeat itself. The laughter and joy of his people dimmed. Stoicism and anger set in as the Allspark failed and their war grew more destructive. It was like the great war from long before his forging, only a thousand times worse. Optimus had no words to describe it as he led his warriors onward, fighting for something even he no longer understood. He acted because that was what duty demanded. Heroism and personal agendas were irrelevant.
Vorns upon vorns of conflict, and he ended up right where he began. His warriors had all been slaughtered, with Bumblebee and Sentinel of all bots having fallen in his defense instead of Elita-One and Rodimus. His frame was slowly shutting down from yet another brutal blaster wound to his chassis, leaving Optimus on his knees. But instead of having the satisfaction of bringing Megatron down with him, Optimus sat alone amidst the rubble of their world, a blaster pointed right at his helm.
“This is the end, little Prime.” Megatron’s voice rang out, but he couldn’t even find it in himself to be angry. This Megatron was not a glitch about his victory. Instead… he seemed somewhat solemn as he lowered his weapon temporarily, allowing Optimus a chance to speak.
“Why? Why go this far?” Optimus couldn’t help but ask the question that had been burning at the back of his mind since he woke all those vorns ago, before he was bitter and scarred. His Megatron had been a power hungry glitch, insanity driving his every action. But this Megatron was far wiser. So why had he done this? Why burn it all down?
“Because your people, the society you built, are corrupt. My kind were bound in chains, told they were monsters and enslaved.” Megatron knelt down, a sign he recognized as indicating respect. Optimus released his axe with a faint cough as he clutched the wound on his side. There was no point fighting now. And beyond that… there was truth in Megatron’s words.
Reviewing the history of both his lives, he could see that there were cracks. Orion Pax had been oblivious to the hidden discrimination toward the frame types that fell out of acceptable ranges. In his current existence, Optimus could now clearly sense the lies that had been fed to him. Thousands of warframe and only warframes would not rebel without reason. They would not flee for millennia instead of blowing the planet to the next solar system. They weren’t an organization built for seeking out power.
Megatron had reasons for his violence, and that at least was a vague comfort.
“I may have had to wait millions of years, but today my people shall have their vengeance and their freedom.” Megatron’s optics were blazing, and yet offered no emotion except eerie calm. Optimus coughed as he tried to respond. It hurt so much now…
“I… I fought for the freedom of my people too. I have fought for so long.” He hated whining, but he was unable to stop the tremor in his voice as he sagged in defeat. He’d managed to fail a second time.
“And I do not blame you for your struggle. You had no way of seeing through the lies.” Megatron, in a gesture of good will Optimus would have never expected, carefully pulled Optimus to his pedes. He held the back of Optimus’s neck, keeping up the illusion that he had the strength to walk himself as Megatron guided him to stand before the Decepticon army, now reveling in their victory.
“Here stands the last of the Autobots! The only one among their number who shall die with honor!” Megatron’s voice rang out. But instead of cheering, the Decepticons stood quiet and firm. Their optics were all locked onto him, but none were disrespecting the dead. The Autobots who had fallen were laid out, gathered by lower ranked Decepticons to be put to rest respectfully. It was enough to have Optimus’s venting hitch as Megatron’s blade came to rest against his neck.
He had failed. But at least this end was an honorable one.
“You were a good rival, Optimus. Die well, and know that I have respected no other as I have you.” Optimus managed a faint laugh as he looked up, uncaring of the doom that awaited him as he once again found himself staring up at smoke filled skies.
He missed Elita. He missed Prowl.
“Till All Are One.” With his final mutter, the blade came down, and Optimus knew no more…
Until the voice rang out as it had millennia earlier.
“Too late. You woke too late.”
The chorus washed over him again, soothing and yet dejected all at once. Optimus felt a flash of anger infused his being as he snapped back, pain and anguish from both lives overwhelming reason.
“How was I supposed to have remembered earlier? I only got my memory back when I used the Allspark-” Before he could finish, the voice cut him off firmly, but not unkindly.
“It was not your fault. You fought well, my chosen.”
Optimus wanted to stay angry, but the faint comfort kept him from doing more than bristling internally.
“We will try again. Just as we did before.”
Oh.
So the voice was going to send him back again. But why? What did this thing care about so deeply?
“Who are you?” He tried to pose a question, but again the voice silenced him as it washed around him in a maelstrom of love, determination, and conviction.
“Not now. We are out of time.”
----
Once more, Optimus woke. This time however, he came online with a start.
He shot up, clutching at his chassis as his spark spun and his processor burned with new data. It was easier this time to know and to accept. This frame was built for larger stores of information, a genetic quality of his lineage. He heard others around him, but he was far more focused on the meshing of personalities that now overwhelmed him.
He was forged a Prime, rather than made into one. He was of an ancient line, but only by the standards of his current reality. By any other metric, he was still young, practically a newbuild. He had a brother, Megatron. Together they were raised by Sentinel Prime, but only Optimus was chosen to lead their people. Megatron was to be his Lord High Protector, but too many squabbles and differences of opinion led to jealousy. That jealousy boiled over into war.
Optimus led his people as well as he could, but compared to the experiences of his other lives, he was all but a child. He had strength and he had wisdom, but he lacked the necessary exposure to truly wage war successfully. Megatron was no better, and so their war waged until their world burned and the galaxy crumbled in their wake. Countless good mecha died, including close allies and companions during the battle to save Earth and reclaim the Matrix.
And Jazz… by the Allspark, they’d lost Jazz.
“Prime, slow down.” Ratchet pressed a servo against his chest, forcing Optimus to sit back down as he unknowingly attempted to stand. Only then did Optimus note how erratic his venting was, or how hard his servos shook as he tried to calm his anxious spark.
“Slaggit mech, scared the scrap outta us.” Ironhide tugged on Optimus’s arm as well, forcing him to settle. Optimus looked at both their faces and had to fight back a flinch. Ironhide looked… wrong by the standard of his prior lives. As did Ratchet for that matter. Their face plates did not exist, instead replaced by ever shifting parts to facilitate movement that he logically knew was required for proper functionality in their kind.
After a moment, Optimus’s initial fear response settled and he began to review anything of importance. Immediately he recognized the fact that he was far too late to do what the voice was asking of him. He still wasn’t entirely sure if the voice wanted him to kill Megatron or win the war. But both options were practically impossible to reach considering his situation. Their people were all but extinct as it was. Even if he won the war and ended his brother, their world was still dead.
It would be like the first life he lived. Eventually, they would all perish. Considering how upset the voice was about the death of so many, Optimus assumed it would prefer a different outcome. Slag there was so much to do. He was already too late to save what was lost. Jazz would have already had a plan-
Jazz.
His servos shook as Optimus buried his face in his servos, remembering yet another loss that weighed on him. First Elita, then Prowl, and now Jazz.
Jazz had been with him since the beginning. He was a friend during training, a comrade as Optimus found himself accepted into the ranks of Primes, and later he became something more as the war began and dragged on endlessly. His spark cried out in grief as he recalled the countless times Jazz had come to spend time with him when he was but a scientist. They shared so many moments, tender touches and deep conversations. Jazz was, despite all his joy and whimsy, a highly educated and thoughtful mech.
Many of their youthful plans had long since been discarded. But Optimus remembered talk of hatchlings. He recalled many long nights where neither of them could recharge, so they cuddled up close and instead talked about better times. Slag it all, they had made a promise to formally join their houses once the war came to an end.
Now it didn’t matter. Not only had he failed to do as the voice asked, he’d failed to save the one person he really cared about aside from his former brother.
“I’m too late.” Oprimus’s voice cracked as he spoke. Ironhide and Ratchet stalled in their attempts to comfort him. The others were likely just as confused.
“I don’t understand it all. But I know now that I’m too late to change how this will all end.” Optimus muttered more to himself than to the others, grief overriding reason. He did not understand the voice, but by the Allspark he wished he could curse it for doing this to him.
“No matter how hard I fight to end this accursed war, it always ends in sorrow.” Always in ashes. Always alone.
“Why? Why did it have to be me? Why was I chosen?” Curse it all. He should have died with Elita and Rodimus back on that forsaken battlefield. Perhaps then he could have found peace until the Quintessons inevitably revived their species as slaves once more.
“Losing Jazz hit us all hard… but we’re going to be alright, Optimus. You are going to be alright.” Strong arms wrapped around Optimus’s shoulders, drawing him into a firm embrace. Looking up, Optimus found it was Bumblebee who held him, his voice a mix of radio clips and static, but just as comforting as ever. This was a mech he recognized from all his lives. Despite all the minute differences, this was still his Bee.
“Bee’s right. You aren’t yourself. That last fight really fragged up y’er helm.” Ironhide patted him on the shoulder, offering comfort in his own gruff way. It did little to help, but Optimus appreciated the gesture anyway as the lamentations of two other lifetimes settled in his very core.
“I have to agree with Ironhide for once. Take some time and rest, Optimus. You need it.” Ratchet tried to smile, as did the rest. Unfortunately, it did next to nothing for Optimus’s mental state, even though he would have liked it to.
Battles came and went. Megatron died and was revived. The stakes continued to grow ever higher. When Quintessa came, Optimus was too tired to resist her call. He wanted to be done with it all, and if her offer of revival was what it took, he was willing to do what was required of him. Even when he broke free of her spell through Bumblebee and created a tentative peace between his kind and humanity, it was all very empty.
Megatron was unaccounted for. The Decepticons still roamed. Their war was not over… merely stalled.
There was no point in fighting anymore… at least not in this life.
“Hey Optimus.” Bumblebee called out to him as Optimus sat on a grassy hill, overlooking the landscape. He’d already made his decision, but he could tell Bumblebee sensed it.
“Bumblebee… it is good to see you again.” Optimus replied curtly, his sword resting firmly by his side. His optics were locked on the setting sun, enjoying a brief moment of peace before he tried again. The voice would surely make him fight once more, so for a mere klik, he wanted respite.
“You haven’t been around for a while. You know you can talk to us about stuff, right?” Bumblebee came to sit with him, a servo resting on Optimus’s leg in a friendly manner. Optimus regarded it with a faint hum, feeling calmer than he had in several Earth years. Such turmoil… such hopelessness. He had no idea what happened to the world when he perished and the voice took him, but Optimus hoped that those he left behind kept on living. He hoped the galaxy recovered from the war, back in his first realm. And as much as he hated the suffering of his last life, he did partially wish that the Decepticons were indeed ruling Cybertron in peace now that the Autobots were gone.
By the stars… it would soothe him greatly if his people managed to find a safe source of energon and began raising hatchlings again. He could never accomplish what the voice wanted, but his people, if they were lucky and didn’t annihilate each other in his absence, would endure.
“I know.” Optimus’s response was stalled, but Bumblebee didn’t seem to mind as they both sat there quietly. The sun continued to set, and as it did, Optimus felt his time drawing to a close. He had not had the chance in prior lives… but maybe this time a final will and testament was due.
“I’ve done this before, Bumblebee.” The words flowed easily from his vocalizer, relieving tension that had hung heavy in his shoulders since his waking. Bumblebee regarded him nervously, but did not interrupt as he continued.
“Countless battles, endless conflicts. Yet I cannot seem to complete the task that was given to me.” Looking up, Optimus was relieved further as he saw stars instead of smoke. It was going to be a pleasant deviation from his prior existences.
“What task is that?” Bumblebee questioned hesitantly, his concern evident in the way his optics cycled and his door wings twitched. Optimus felt a hint of guilt bubble up in his spark, but it was soon smothered by exhaustion. The voice would return him soon enough. It didn’t really matter.
“I… do not know. Not entirely.” He admitted his ignorance without shame. The voice had given him a duty, but that duty was vague and uncertain. “How can you do something if you don’t even know what you are meant to be accomplishing? You treat yourself too harshly.” Such comfort from one so young. The two other lives within him smiled at the offered kindness. But Optimus merely sighed.
Born too late to stop the war… This was all he could do.
“The one who gave me my purpose, the one who keeps making me fight… that being showed me a vision of my brother. The fire… the death… I felt that maybe he was the key. But he’s no longer a threat, and I do not feel complete.” More and more of the weight lifted from Optimus’s spark as he poured out his woes. There was a certain melancholy to the whole situation, but speaking was freeing.
“I think I was meant to preserve our world and our people. But I came too late to do that.” Optimus had his opinions when it came to the voice and its vision. Now that he’d lived three times and failed in each attempt he made to target Megatron specifically, he had a feeling the voice wanted something else.
But even if that were the case, there was still nothing he could do in his current state. His work here was done.
“We live and there is a chance at restoration. You did all you could. You are not to blame.” Bumblebee’s tone indicated he was more than a little concerned. However, Optimus simply hummed. The ache of loss hurt more than it should have. But Jazz had meant so much to him in this life… and the loss was fresh.
“So I’ve been told… but I know in my spark that this is not what the entity sought. I shall be forced to fight once more. Of that I am certain.” Optimus again looked back up at the skies, trying to find familiar constellations he learned while talking with Spike all those vorns ago. What would that boy think of him now? There was no joy in him anymore. At least, not the open variety.
“Maybe you should take some time off… go join Drift and explore for a while. I’m sure Sam would love to see you again.” Bumblebee offered with a nervous uptick of his doorwings. The air between them was tense, unspoken understanding radiating on both their ends. Bumblebee was doing his part, but it was clear that Optimus was going to do what he planned to, and no one could stop him.
“I shall consider it.” Offering a gentle smile, Optimus clasped Bumblebee’s shoulder and memorized his features. He hoped the voice’s next attempt would let him keep his oldest friend. He wasn’t sure how he was going to keep marching on if every time he woke, his dearest companion was always deceased.
“Optimus, I know you’ve got your own monsters to face, but please… don’t give up on us or yourself.” Bumblebee drew Optimus in for a hug, one that lasted a while. But eventually the time came for his companion to leave. Bumblebee hesitated, looking back periodically as he made his way back to base. Optimus kindly did not act until long after dark, and even then, he ensured he was far from prying optics as he recorded a final message and raised his blade for a final time.
Guilt hung in his spark as the void claimed him, but he couldn’t bring himself to care as the voice again washed over him.
“You hurt so deeply, my chosen.”
Oh so now the voice pitied him. After sending him through suffering meant for Unicron’s servants, only now did it regard him?
“You did this to me and I don't even know who you are or what you want from me.” He wanted to be angry. By the stars he wanted to rage.
“Oh dear one, we did not mean to cause you such suffering… but one of ours must bear the burden, and you who carried such spirit touched us deeply with your devotion.”
What the frag did that even mean? The voice chose him to endure life after life and seemingly didn’t anticipate that it would hurt? What a joke.
“You make me live again and again in realities that are ever changing and yet still the same. How could it not bring me pain? Why would you make me do this? I watch my people die over and over again and nothing I do seems to bring it to an end.” Grief and anger surged forward in a brief flare of rebellion. Despite that, his wrath died down all but instantaneously. Rage would earn him nothing. Not when the voice apparently commanded his reality.
“Not yet… we cannot repair what is broken yet. But soon we will succeed. You learn and we grow.”
How ominous the voice was…
“What are you?” He asked yet again, not really expecting an answer.
“All that is and will be.”
----
For the fourth time, Optimus shot awake coughing as lingering pain from his reformat eased out of his tense and tight cables. He fell to his knees as knowledge washed over him once more. This time, however, it did not burn as it had in lives before. Knowledge was quickly filed away and understanding set in as soon as the information did. The Matrix pulsed in soothing waves, the relic finally of use in ways it had otherwise not been in prior lives.
He was Optimus Prime, formerly Orion Pax the Archivist. He was taken from the wilds while young and raised in Iacon under Alpha Trion where he spent much of his time reviewing history and taking note of corruption. He allied himself with Megatronus of Kaon, the Gladiator. Through their combined might, they eventually developed a bond and reached the High Council. Orion was chosen to be the Prime instead of Megatron, formerly Megatronus. That single decision tore them apart and sent them spiralling into war. Only when it reached its peak had Orion gone to receive the Matrix of leadership from one familiar entity.
Primus. The god of all Cybertronians. He who made them from dust and starlight. The connection between Primus and the voice was an easy one to make, and above all, it made sense. Primus, the all knowing ever patient god of their people was bound to be the entity trying to preserve lives. Why wouldn’t he? Above all, his inexperience made sense. Primus had not even been a concept in his first life, or his second for that matter. There were whispers in his third, but they were distant things.
It seemed the god that had taken him as a champion was finally beginning to change reality in meaningful ways. The story had changed to include their creator and actually make use of the relic that continually gave Optimus back his memory.
A fascinating change indeed. One that had the potential to actually turn out the way Primus intended.
Optimus followed quietly as he was brought to his pedes and returned to base. He knew what path stood before him now. Even still, Ratchet pulling him aside as soon as time allowed surprised him for a moment before memory reminded him of who the medic was.
“Orion… are you still in there?” Ratchet touched his face, feeling his now sharper features and assessing his frame for damage. Optimus smiled, nodding as memory returned to him. Anguish for loves lost still hung in his spark, but more than anything, he felt adoration as it stirred in him. It hurt to have a partner live and vent beside him, but more than that, it healed.
“I am here… moreso now than ever.” Finally, the Matrixdid something useful and toned down the emotional weight of his extended memory. If he’d had this in his prior existence, he might not have ended things so suddenly. Poor Bumblebee likely felt horrible, if he was still online at any rate.
“The Matrix, what has it done to you?” Ratchet's question was sharp, but still tender in his unique way as he looked at Optimus’s chassis accusingly. Optimus fought back laughter that he had not known since his first life.
“Memory, Ratchet. So much memory…” With a smile, Optimus pressed a kiss to Ratchet’s brow, reveling in the closeness of one he held so dear. This was what he needed. Time, composure, and connection. Primus truly was developing.
“I remember loves from lives that were not this one. I recall battles, wars and death so great the bodies coated the earth.” Ratchet held him tighter as Optimus’s field, a new addition to his biology, flared out in sheer relief and joy. For all the sorrows he endured, it all seemed less important when he was with his love, at least for this life.
“I remember the torment of not knowing… and now the grief of revelation.” Ratchet stiffened at his statement, likely running through a thousand grim scenarios in his processor. Optimus saw no need to correct him since it earned him a tighter hug.
“I’m here, Orion. I’m here.” Ratchet, in a rare show of open affection, did his best to soothe. Optimus returned the gesture by resting his chin on his dear doctor’s helm, enjoying the closeness.
“Of that, I am more thankful than I can properly express… it has been so long.” Ratchet’s field flared in concern as Optimus pulled away to look out the nearest window and out at the stars. Oh how he loved the stars…
“I now understand my design.” Primus did not wish for death. He desired life.
Lucky for him, Optimus’s memory from his current existence supplied him with countless plans for victory. If all went well, the war would come to a close in short order and he would finally be free of Primus’s grand mission.
However, unfortunately for Optimus’s grand aspirations, the war dragged on despite his knowledge. His newest Megatron was a cunning creature backed by strength and age. His followers were just as intelligent, and no matter what Optimus threw at them, they adapted. His efforts were useless when pitted against such wrath.
As the war went, Optimus felt his chances of success dwindling. By the time they got to Earth with their conflict, he was fairly certain Primus would have him try again. Even still, he managed to salvage the situation. With Ratchet by his side and his team supporting him, restoration was made possible. Optimus was even revived as he had been once in his first life to facilitate the repairs being made to their home. He took that to mean Primus was at least partially pleased with the outcome, even if Megatron was still out there lurking and Unicron cursed.
The people mourned the dead, and Optimus certainly felt weariness in his core. But the war was over, Autobot and Decepticon were coming together, and if all went well, Cybertron was to be fully functional in a few centuries. Was it ideal? No. But there was hope to be found.
“Optimus, are you coming to berth or not?” Ratchet tapped his pede impatiently as Optimus waved Bumblebee off as he set toward Earth for another diplomatic mission. He smiled, content with his situation as he responded.
“In a bit, beloved.” Watching the space bridge close was strangely calming. Millennia of war, and for once, he wasn’t about to die on a battlefield or alone drowning in grief. He’d played his part, even if the loss of life still weighed on him in the dead of night.
“Berth. Now.” Ratchet looked more annoyed than truly upset. Optimus couldn’t help but laugh lightly at the expression his dear doctor was making as he obeyed the given order.
“Very well.” Wrapping an arm around Ratchet’s waist, he guided them both to their habsuite. He settled quietly, pressing a kiss to Ratchet’s audial and watching as his love drifted off for a while. It was peaceful, a blessed relief.
As his optics closed, Optimus smiled. Megatron was still a threat, but he was finally done with his mission-
“I died?” Optimus couldn’t help but gawk as he found himself in the void once more. He tried to think about what happened, but he got the distinct impression his death was not a natural one. What was Ratchet going to think? By the Thirteen, what went wrong?
“It was not intended. But we expected it sooner or later. Your work is not yet done.”
What? Had he not restored Cybertron? It was an imperfect restoration and the war still occurred, but all was as it was meant to be.
“Why did you restore me if I was simply to die and do it all again?” He wasn’t necessarily upset this time. Just… confused. He’d had his moment of peace, but why did Primus see fit to try again? The people were happy, or at least getting there.
“We believed we might salvage what remained. We did, and you fought well.”
Optimus internally sighed. He knew how this was going to go.
“But we lament the loss of life. We grieve over what could have been. So many children… extinguished so young.”
Primus was a god, but he was, at his core, something above mortality. He had no reason to understand loss like Optimus and the rest did. Of course he grieved. To him it was likely a numbers game.
“I know what you are now, Primus. Why do you continue to strive for this strange perfection? Cybertron was restored. The people were happy. Why have me do it all again?” He tried to express his concerns, but Primus seemed to be displeased as he responded, his voice firmer than before.
“Your other half falls to our counterpart time and time again. Our children are massacred when it is not needed. If it can be prevented, then we wish it so.”
So that was how it was going to be. Perfection, or nothing at all. Optimus could already feel exhaustion settling in.
“Go. Try again. Soon… we will make things right.”
----
Waking was easier this time. The reality Primus made was much like his first, and as such, Optimus knew how to act quickly. He went straight for Megatron, charging in with all his knowledge and experience. He had no love to hold him back and his happier existence prior to his current one eased the grief enough for him to focus. Even still, the war occurred. Megatron seemed to become more intelligent every time they met in a new life. Perhaps it was an equalization factor. Regardless, war came without an end in sight.
At least until Optimus beat Megatron in a duel, earning their people a tentative peace under a Council made up of an Autobot, a Decepticon, and a neutral party. Optimus was fairly certain Primus would not be pleased despite Cybertron largely avoiding complete desolation and chose to isolate himself to keep away from further incidents. He could have ended himself, but he saw no need. He took the time to simply live, helping where he could and keeping Megatron in line when he wasn’t doing that.
He let life pass him by, at least until Windblade arrived, speaking of Titans and war. That was when he knew it was time to act, and he did so without complaint. He didn’t even mind working with Megatron. It was just like old times, like when he and Megatronus talked over revolution matters. Although, much to Optimus’s agitation, his current Megatron was beyond fond of prodding at his emotional weak points.
Despite that, there were times when he enjoyed conversing with the glitch.
“I asked once, in another life, why you did all this.” Optimus stood quietly, watching the stars just as he always did. Megatron huffed as he cleaned his blaster, the only part of his body he seemed to actually give a frag about.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Megatron snarked, his optics never leaving his weapon.
“Why did you rise up? Why did you go to war? You had the whole world before you, and you chose to burn it down.” It was a question Optimus recalled asking his first Megatron, only to get laughed at in response. His second Megatron spoke of corruption, his third was a jealous creature, and his fourth had legitimate reasons for waging war. But his current one and the first? He never really understood, even though they were technically the same mech in many regards.
“Hmm… I would think you would know the answer to this, Prime.” Optimus sighed, expecting laughter.
“Power?”
“To a degree.” Megatron’s response earned a momentary glance from Optimus, his finials twitching in mild surprise.
“I wanted the power to change the world, to mold it in my image.” Megatron, smug as ever, crossed his arms and gestured out to the planet they were now attempting to save from itself. Optimus followed his gaze, but he still found himself questioning.
“Why?”
“Because I didn’t like the way things were, or the corruption that set into our society.” Megatron huffed, clearly quite pleased with his answer. Optimus however found himself more contemplative. He knew how to see corruption after so many lives, but he still wondered…
How much had he missed?
“Was that corruption always there?” He pondered aloud, more to himself than the mech next to him as he ran through ancient memory. It was blurry now. Distant and no longer as applicable.
“Of course it was. You were just so lost in your little dock worker world that you couldn’t see it.” Megatron, either not knowing the question was not aimed at him or not caring, responded with a huff. He gestured to Optimus in a dismissive manner, and that was enough for Optimus to think back on his life, back to Elita.
Their lives were simple. Of course they failed to see corruption.
“You fought for freedom?” Optimus wondered more and more if they were truly the same mech given different paths to walk. Megatronus was similar to Orion Pax in many ways. Was that simply an aspect of his and Megatron’s relationship?
“In a sense. I wanted every mech to be able to choose their future for themselves.” That was very Megatronus of him. It seemed it was not only Primus who was learning.
“Then why were we fighting at all?” Optimus took the chance to step a little closer, remembering nights spent with his Lord High Protector in his third life. He missed his brother, even if the glitch was a pain in the aft.
“Because you were a fraggin pacifist and a weepy newbuild until I beat some sense into you. By then your Autobots were dead set on the destruction of my Decepticons.” Megatron punched him in the shoulder. Optimus simply sighed. He’d forgotten how much of a brute his first life’s Megatron could be when not otherwise engaged.
“For what it’s worth, I apologize for how our war ended. I wanted to end the needless death.” His attempt at apologizing was met with laughter, a mirror to his end lifetimes ago.
“And instead you brought more. How comical.” Megatron slapped his back in what could have been a friendly manner if not for the force behind it. Optimus internally cringed, but allowed it. How familiar this all was.
“You are the worst.” His comment was met with even more laughter, to which Optimus simply walked away.
When the time came for him to die for his people, Optimus took the burden without complaint. He was done anyway.
And just as predicted, Primus met him once more.
“You did better this time. But still not enough. Too many died. Too many children lost to war.”
Optimus didn’t even have the energy to be surprised.
“You seek the impossible, Primus. No matter what you do to me or how you reforge reality, war is inevitable.” Attempting reason was likely impossible, but Optimus gave it his best shot. Perfection was impossible, but here Primus was, trying anyway. Granted, if anyone was to aim for such a thing, it was only really plausible for a god to pursue such a goal.
“Not so. We will make it right.”
But at what price?
“I remember too late to change things if I have a relationship with Megatron. And if I do not, I hold no sway over him.” Again, Optimus put forward his objections. Anyone from his prior lives would have likely gawked at him, save for perhaps Ratchet, his ever faithful atheist.
“We know. We are learning. Soon, all will be as it should be.”
That much Optimus could attest to. It was already far easier to operate than it had been the first few times. Still, he didn’t want to do this forever. He’d had moments of peace and he wanted them back.
“I’m tired. I want to return to those I have loved. Elita, Prowl, Jazz, Ratchet… I miss them. I miss the versions of them I adored.” He sensed waves of understanding from his god, but Primus spoke all the same.
“We will give them all to you when the work is done.”
That was a pleasant promise, if nothing else.
“Stop the war. Stop the death. Stop your counterpart from falling. That is your design.”
----
Another life, another awakening. Optimus tried his best, especially since reality was again similar to his first life. But guiding and succeeding were two very different things, and war seemed to be inevitable. He wasn’t able to put a stop to it, so he simply resolved to observe as Bumblebee and Windblade worked. He did offer his assistance when the Quintessons came and the Tarn from another time popped out of the void, but more often he preferred to watch. Especially since he got humorous commentary from Megatron when they weren’t at each other’s throats.
“I’ve been meaning to ask… why is it that you’re always so-” Megatron, between sips of his drink, gestured vaguely to Optimus’s form. Optimus chuckled, leaning back in his seat a bit as he and Megatron sat observing the city. It was still on fire in places, but it wasn’t exactly their problem. They tended to cause more trouble when they did anything outside of combat.
“Aloof? Uncaring? I don’t know how to describe it.” Megatron tried to find the words for his question. Optimus politely did not interrupt as he nursed his energon, content to be since he knew his current life was a failure anyway.
“You always preach your talking points about freedom and all that, but I never see any drive in you. It’s boiled my energon since the war began.” His once foe huffed into his drink, seemingly annoyed. Optimus saw through it easily, noting the genuine curiosity there. They both had secrets, but Megatron was never one to leave them alone.
“Because for me, there is no point in passion. I failed in my only purpose long before I took the Matrix.” Optimus, having long since grown apathetic to anything and everything related to his continual existence, shrugged. “What in the Allspark are you talking about?” Megatron made a face that was worthy of the human ‘memes’. Optimus fought to keep his composure as he tried to keep it serious and failed, at least in part. He was unable to keep from smiling, despite the situation.
“I have loved and lost, Megatron. I have done all I could to try and prevent war… but I always arrive too late to change things.” Taking the chance to chug his glass, Optimus sighed in contentment. Warm energon really was the best. Living so long, one learned to appreciate the little things.
“You… what are you?” Optimus raised an optical ridge in mild surprise as he looked up at his former rival. Megatron was glaring at him, not necessarily in anger, but suspicion.
“You sense it?”
“I always knew there was something off with you. So spit it out, what are you? What happened to Orion Pax?” Well that was an odd way to phrase the question, but who was Optimus to judge. The Archivist in him probably would have asked something similar.
“He is me and I am him. Except one of us is wiser. One of us remembers realities that have long ended.” Keeping the answer as simple as he could without giving Megatron an existential crisis, Optimus put down his now empty cube and casually checked his HUD for anything important before continuing.
“One of us cannot rest until we prevent the Great War.” That was about the best way he had to describe it. Until he remembered, he was just an idealistic fool with far too much ambition.
“Unmaker cursed?” Megatron, with all the subtlety of a Titan in a city, squinted as he made his accusation only barely veiled as a question.
“No, the opposite.” Taking it in stride, Optimus kept his answer simple.
“Slag… that’s worse.” That was putting it lightly. At least he understood.
“I can know no rest until I stop the war before it can start… and keep you from falling to the Unmaker’s touch.” Optimus gave Megatron a look without really meaning to. It was more of a sidequest at this point in his long life, but he was getting tired of having to divert Megatron away from drugs or other less than pleasant curses.
“Why would I-?”
“Other versions of yourself were desperate. Far more desperate… they needed strength and knowledge, so they sought it where they could.” Instantly, Optimus thought back to his fourth Megatron. That mech was a monster in many ways, especially when high as a kite on the Unmaker’s blood.
“Have you told anyone else about this?” Megatron, with a surprising amount of concern evident in his tone, crossed his arms as he leaned back in his chair. Optimus regarded him quietly for a moment, unsure if he should respond. However, after a klik, he concluded there was no harm in it.
“No. Even if they believed me, there is no stopping it. When I die, Primus shall restore me to life in another time and place to attempt to stop the war… to stop you.” Saying it out loud was… rather depressing. The air grew heavier in response, and Optimus almost regretted opening his mouth.
“Sounds lonely.” And then Megatron came out of nowhere with a strange amount of sympathy.
“It is. But I take comfort in lives like these… ones that are lighter on my spark.” Trying to stay positive and not think hard on the grimness of his situation, Optimus smiled. Megatron didn’t seem to buy it, but played into it anyway.
“How about you tell me about the other versions of me out there. Get it off your chassis for a while, eh?” Bless him, he was kinder than the rest.
Life went on after that, with things changing and Cybertron being saved a few times. Eventually, Optimus got tired of it all and let an assassin get to him. But his return to the void created a whole new set of problems.
“You did not use this life wisely.”
And there came the disappointment.
“You sent me too late. I cannot work with nothing.” Too tired to be upset, Optimus mentally projected a shrug. He wasn’t sure if it went through, but he hoped it did if only for his amusement.
“It is your duty to do this work. We give you wisdom and opportunity. Why do you struggle so?”
Oh to be a god and not understand mortality.
“I share next to nothing in common with Megatron. I cannot stop a war if I cannot relate to its leader. I certainly can’t kill him when we are always near equal in strength. We are too different… and even with knowledge, it means nothing if I can’t make him see reason.” Optimus expected exactly nothing from his attempt at reason, but to his surprise, Primus paused. Things went quiet for a while, long enough that he momentarily wondered if his god had up and chosen a new champion. Then, Primus’s voice returned with renewed energy.
“We have never rewritten the world in such a way. Your counterpart was always meant to be so. Different, unique.”
By the thirteen, he’d managed to make Primus see some reason.
“We can come from the same roots and still have a chance to be different. Please, if you want this war to end before it can start, you must put me with him when we begin. I need time.” Internally crossing his digits, knocking on the organic substance of wood, and praying to every version of the thirteen he knew of, Optimus threw out his request.
“Then it shall be so. We have eternity to complete this work.”
Fraggin yes.
----
Waking was no longer a stressful thing. Optimus came into being, knew he was fragged, and waged war as usual. The shared origins helped, and he did his best to make the most of it, but Primus was a fickle being on a good cycle, and Optimus knew this was a test run more than anything else. Being a miner had sucked, but it gave him and Megatron connection that finally manifested itself vorns upon vorns later on Earth when, in a grand middle finger to every other Megatron, Optimus managed to convince his foe to side with him.
It was brilliant, and for the first time in forever, Optimus was outwardly joking and having a fantastic time as he waited for the end. Sure, he probably could have been doing more, but he didn’t feel the need to. He’d tested his theory. Shared origins were perfect. Now he just needed to get the Matrix and his memory at a better time.
Until he kicked the can, he was more than happy to watch as Primus’s newest additions to reality bounded and played, goofing off with their human family. Optimus personally found it odd and wouldn’t have made the choice himself if he were Primus, but it wasn’t exactly his problem. Wait, watch, observe, step in if need be, and wait to try again.
But of course, waiting was boring without company, and it had been many vorns since he’d taken a lover of any variety. He considered Elita, but his version was too different from the one he knew from his first life to really sit well with him. Instead he went for a thrill in Starscream of all mecha.
Quite frankly he enjoyed the wild card attitude, especially when they were attempting to be domestic.
“I don’t think I’m going to have to fight for much longer.” Optimus remarked as he fiddled with his ration. He almost wanted to poke holes in it for fun, but the older and more bitter aspects of his personality shut that idea down quickly.
“Oh really?” Starscream snarked from across the table, likely thinking about their current affairs. Optimus smiled fondly as he pulled out his favorite tactic to mess with mecha aside from using human tech incorrectly for fun.
“You will not understand… but Primus has learned. He’s setting the pieces right. Soon I expect he will give me the proper setting to do as he desires.” Letting his voice drop an octave, Optimus leaned into the ominousness of his time as the archivist. Starscream was unimpressed and threw a spoon at him.
“Stop talking like you are right out of the fragging Covenant. What are you trying to say?” Ah, Starscream was so refreshing.
“It may not be in this life or the next, but sometime in the near future, there will be no war.” Optimus lost a bit of his jesting attitude as he fiddled further with his ration. So many lives lived in rage and confusion… soon it would all be over. How strange that feeling was.
“Sure Optimus. Keep dreaming and using your emojis.” Starscream rolled his optics and chugged his drink before sauntering over in a familiar demand for intimacy, one which normally began with threats of violence.
“Now are you going to eat that or should I?” Optimus smiled, letting Starscream drape himself over his shoulders like a makeshift cape. Things could be worse.
He just had to wait.
And wait he did, until the time came for him to give his life to open the space bridge back to Cybertron. It was an easy choice to make, and Optimus went with a cheery whistle.
“Almost. My design improves once more.”
Primus’s voice was more composed than it had been. His intentions seemed clearer, his emotions less out of sorts.
“So you are singular now?” Optimus noted the change in interest. Primus had gone through some changes, and so had he it seemed.
“I have grown, my chosen. Through your optics I have seen, and with your aid, I now know what I must do.”
So it had all been worth it. That was… relieving. The memories of toil and struggle from his first few lives eased dramatically in the back of his mind as Optimus considered. If Primus had things right… then he would soon rest.
“You promised me my loved ones. Will I have them this time?” It was hopeful and presumptuous, but he had to ask.
“Yes. The world is changed once more, and now all is as it should be. Act swiftly, my chosen. For the time to end this great war is upon us.”
Optimus’s spark flared in sheer determination as the first real confirmation of anything he’d had since his mission began. This was his chance then. No more waiting. No more wars. No more long agonizing realities where all he had to do aside from suffer was perish.
“When my work is done, do I have to remember all of this suffering? All the pain I have endured?” Part of him didn’t want to forget the few moments of joy he’d experienced, especially in his time as the archivist and onward. But the rest of him was tired. So very tired. He laughed and joked in recent lives, but that was more to cope.
He was done with all of this.
“No. Once the threat has been averted, I shall take from you the torment you have endured for the sake of my progression.”
At least Primus was kind enough to offer him that much for his service.
“Will I see you again?” He doubted he’d miss the mission or the void, but there was a certain comfort in Primus’s presence. He did not wish to simply cease being at the end of it all.
“My chosen, I have always been with you. That shall never change.”
Worries he had not known eased into nothing and Optimus found himself calm as the cycle he’d first been forged. Everything was going to be alright now.
“My thirteenth Prime… my chosen champion… go now and complete this great work.”
Primus’s voice washed over him, firm and adoring as the void faded.
“You have served me long enough.”
----
Wakefulness came in a flash, and it settled quickly. Optimus shot toward the surface, fueled by Primus’s intervention and the Matrix’s power. When he landed, he locked optics with the one mech who mattered most for the sake of his success. Megatron, his eternal foe and rival.
They clashed, but wisdom guided Optimus to victory. As Megatron fell to his knees in defeat, Optimus was quick to pull him up and into a hug. Memory from his current life urged him on, encouraging him to hold his closest companion tight. D-16 was a kind spark, and he did not deserve a life of violence.
“You’ve done enough. I’m sorry I could not stand with you when you needed me most.” The mech in his arms tensed, rage etched onto his features as he pulled away, albeit with reluctance.
“How could you? How could you defend him?!” Megatron shook, gesturing toward where Sentinel’s body lay. Optimus was unphased. He’d seen far worse versions of D-16. He knew that the mech before him still had a chance.
“I was scared for you, Dee. I do not wish to fight you. Please, don’t make me.” The words came easily, emotions of all his lives imbuing his every glyph with honesty. Never once had he wanted war, and that fact had not changed.
“You betrayed me.” Megatron bristled, clutching at his damaged arm. Optimus took the chance to step forward, reaching out with all the kindness he could muster. This mech, his Dee, was just a scared newbuild. He’d been exposed to too much all at once.
He needed rest and support.
Those things Optimus could offer him.
“Perhaps I did… but no others need to suffer because of the sins of our ancestors. Let it end here, with us.” He hesitated a moment, considering if this was going to be the moment he messed it all up. Would he have to live again? Another life in another reality? What would Primus think of him if he failed here? Would he be alone?
A thousand thoughts raged, but ultimately, Optimus found the will to grasp Megatron’s servo firmly, but not so much as to be seen as a threat. It was a symbol of peace, one he hoped his companion saw.
“Let us stand together as one.” More hesitation, this time from Megatron. But as Optimus watched, he saw how those vicious red optics eased into orange, then back to a calm yellow. Silence followed as D-16 considered. Optimus could almost feel the whole world weighing on him as he waited with a baited vent.
Then, blessedly, D-16 squeezed his servo back.
“We will talk.” Sheer joy flooded Optimus’s spark as lives upon lives of relief washed over him. In his excitement, he drew D-16 in for another hug, clutching at him almost desperately. Finally, finally, he was going to be free.
“Thank you.” Releasing his hold after a moment, Optimus smiled as he had not in eons and parted his chassis plating so that the Matrix shone clearly. D-16 regarded him suspiciously until Optimus took the Matrix in his servo and grabbed D-16 with the other. Guiding his brother in arms to grasp the ancient relic, Optimus raised both their arms to the skies, a symbol he hoped conveyed unity.
The masses watched in awe, the High Guard stalling in their attacks. In that brief moment, Optimus sensed confirmation from deep within his being. Locks began to settle into place. Memories dimmed.
“You have done well, my chosen.”
At last, his mission was complete.
'"You're going to break into the Decepticon Headquarters and take the Third In Command from his place of work during work hours so that he will have a nap," stated Ravage incredulously.

Jazz had noticed it was getting steadily colder. He wasn’t too concerned at first. It’s how the day cycles went: they started cold in the mornings, heated up slightly by midday, then cooled off again at night. But that cycle it never warmed up. It kept getting colder.
Thicker clouds rolled in. They were so dark it was difficult to tell what time of day it was.
Jazz swore when he saw dark clouds gather more and more on the horizon. One of the major downsides of the planet's lack of any presence was the absence of weather prediction systems. Or any other satellite.
Jazz could only assume there was a storm coming. He couldn’t even be sure that it was going to hit them. But it was always best to prepare for the worst. This planet had severe weather. It was just unfortunate that what looked like a serious storm was rolling in while they were visiting.
Jazz pinged Chromedome’s short-range comms. He sent a quick message off telling the other mech to head back to camp soon. Chromedome responded with a short confirmation.
Jazz headed down to the shore. He wanted to get his time-lapse cameras. They only had so many of those, and he didn’t want to lose them to a storm. The winds were starting to blow harder, and he pressed his plating in tightly. He revved his engine in an attempt to get heat to circulate better.
It worked, but the biting cold was uncomfortable.
He grabbed their remaining seaside equipment and started to leave. The waves crashed harshly against the shore. The sky was starting to grow darker as the planet's sun was covered with thick dark clouds.
He could practically feel the cold burrowing into his plating.
Jazz looked out toward the water. In the distance, he could see the storm getting closer and closer. The clouds were moving aggressively toward the direction of their camp. Jazz frowned.
He saw a flash of blue-grey. It was the larger mer. Jazz let himself stay still for a second as he watched the creature dip its head out of the water. Instead of hopping onto the rock, like it and the other Mer normally did, it turned around to look out at the open ocean. It seemed to look out towards the clouds. It ducked back under the water quickly. It never came back up.
“You got the right idea, buddy,” Jazz whispered to himself, “Hope to see you again soon.”
Jazz turned to leave.
He climbed back to camp. He walked quickly and carefully. It was starting to snow. It was making the stony outcropping even slicker than it normally was. Jazz’s climb was slow and careful. He didn’t want to slip on his way back to camp. He pushed himself up and over the ledge.
The air around him was dropping rapidly in temperature. The snowfall was picking up and falling heavier. The dark clouds were pushing inland. The sky was growing darker and darker. He walked through the fresh snowfall back towards the remains of the settlement.
He made it back to their little claimed building. He faintly saw a light shine through the small window. It flickered as something crossed its path. Jazz vented in relief.
Chromedome had been wandering off more and more. Or it had seemed like he had. Jazz had caught the mech staring off at nothing for small periods of time. Chromedome definitely seemed distracted by something, but Jazz had no idea what it was.
Jazz wanted to find out.
He hoped the mystery was going to be something to keep him busy. At least it was something to keep him entertained while they waited the storm out in the tiny building. Jazz fought off the dread at not knowing how long the snowfall would last.
There was a chance it could last for the rest of their time on this planet. He just hoped that wasn’t going to be the case. It would make their extraction horrible. It would delay their pickup window. If that happened, they would have to start rationing fuel. Not to mention how short the documentary would be.
Jazz winced and just hoped for the best.
The door to the building they had claimed resisted as Jazz pushed it open. The fresh snow was already making the mechanism lock up again. Jazz felt the slightly warmer air rush over his frame as he managed to push the door open. Jazz entered quickly and shut the door behind him. Bits of water dripped off his frame as the ice and snow that had clung to it rapidly melted.
“That storm looks pretty nasty,” Chromedome said.
The other mech stood up and greeted Jazz at the door.
“Felt pretty nasty too,” Jazz joked.
Chromedome’s visor dimmed for a split second, “Any idea on how long it’s going to last?”
“No way to really know,” Jazz admitted. “No satellites, and no way to predict the weather pattern.”
Chromedome vented harshly. He slowly walked over to their small pile of supplies and sat down next to the heater. Jazz followed suit. The inside of the building was warmer. But not nearly enough for it to be anything close to comfortable. Jazz was already starting to feel the cold again.
The silence was already starting to drag on.
Jazz reached into one of the boxes and pulled out an Energon ration.
“You find anything interesting in that abandoned comms building?” Jazz asked. “Before I came in?”
Chromedome tapped a digit against his forearm. The other mech looked like he was deep in thought.
“That's a no?” Jazz asked.
Jazz sat down on the ground and pushed himself close to the heater. He slowly and casually sipped on his ration. He made himself look cool and collected. He didn’t want Chromedome to think he would have a negative reaction if the other mech did find something.
Jazz was just too curious. He had to know.
Chromedome’s shoulder armor dipped down.
“No, I might have found something,” He admitted.
Jazz was just excited to hopefully have something to talk about. He had only just met Chromedome. He hardly knew anything about the mech outside of what he had put in his bare resume. Jazz knew he worked as an enforcer, but that was the limit of it.
Chromedome reached into his subspace and slowly pulled out a data pad.
Jazz widened his optics underneath his visor. He had only seen a few models that old. All of them were in the central archive in Iacon, and were fiercely protected by the archivists there.
“That thing is ancient. Does it still work?” Jazz asked.
“It turns on, but I haven’t been able to get through the encryption on it; whoever owned it made their own algorithms.”
Jazz’s systems were itching with excitement. He was going to tear into that thing and find out what exactly was on it. It was probably something boring, maybe city plans or communication logs. But even that would be such an exciting glimpse into the elusive history of Gelu.
“Can I?” Jazz asked, “I have a buddy who shared a few things with me on this type of thing.”
Chromedome hesitated before offering the data pad to Jazz.
“Just be careful; it’s a miracle this thing still boots,” Chromedome said.
Jazz nodded. He gently wrapped his digits around the data pad. He traced along the seams and found a connector port. Jazz carefully relaxed a seam in his arm and pulled out a cable. He connected to the device.
Jazz still had some less-than-legal algorithms installed in his systems. Even some Orion had made before he was prime. They were useless to him. He never worked with data like Orion did. But he kept them around as a reminder. Whenever he missed Orion, he just thumbed through every little program his friend had ever shared with him.
Jazz tilted his helm as he got through the first screen. The login page used old, outdated algorithms that were easy to bypass. After that, though. There were more complicated custom programs.
Jazz was impressed. If the mech who owned it wasn’t already dead, he would have loved to hear about how such a complicated algorithm was running on such a simple piece of hardware.
The thing was, it was simple hardware. Ancient. It could only encrypt something so well. Even with the impressive custom encryption, it would have a hard limit on what it was capable of. It would have been amazing to see what this colonist could have done with more modern systems.
Jazz worked through the encryption slowly. Trying a few different programs. He started with lower-level, simpler scripts. Jazz was familiar with cracking some impressive encryption for the work he did for the primacy. He wasn’t able to bypass it.
Jazz switched to some of his more aggressive programs. Lines and lines of code that were created to dig up encrypted dirt on the Senate. Jazz let some of those programs attack the device. It was still holding out pretty well. But he was happy to see it making progress.
The lock screen disappeared. Jazz smiled. Files started to fill up the screen.
“You cracked it?”
“Yeah, impressive for an ancient piece of hardware,” Jazz said.
Chromedome looked impressed, but he mostly looked curious. Jazz was eager to dig into the files. It wasn’t Jazz’s find, though. He could wait a bit to dig into it. He offered the data pad back.
“You want to take the first look at the files?”
Chromedome stared down with a brightened visor at the offered data pad. He slowly moved his servos to grab it, and Jazz let him.
Jazz watched eagerly as Chromedome scrolled through the files. Chromedome was silent as he slowly scrolled down. Jazz leaned back against the wall and waited.
“I think this was a journal,” Chromedome said. “Some data logs are running back before the colony; the earliest entry is definitely reading like a journal of some sort.”
“What’s it say?”
“Talks about how he was assigned to the colony without his partner. At least initially, he talks about starting an appeal process.”
“Sad,” Jazz muttered, “Wonder if the mech ever got here before the colony fell?”
Jazz looked up at the ceiling. He finished his Energon ration and placed the empty cube at his side.
Chromedome looked slowly over to Jazz. The motion was unnerving. Jazz pretended not to notice.
“I don’t know what would have been worse,” Chromedome said, “I think if it was me I would have wanted to be here. Even if I knew what was going to happen.”
Jazz’s face pulled into a slight frown. It was a dark thought he didn’t want to linger on.
“Anything else in the first entry that was interesting?” Jazz asked.
Chromedome tilted his helm as he read.
“Sounds like it was a bit more of a relationship than work partners, officially; that’s what he’s calling him, but it seems like it was more than that.”
“Must have been different castes,” Jazz said sadly, “Colony was established right around when the caste system was starting. They might have been afraid to rock the boat. Easier just to say they were work partners.”
“Maybe,” Chromedome said.
“You got anyone waiting for you back home?” Jazz asked.
Chromedome was still reading through the data pad. He didn’t pause in his scrolling.
“Not really. I don’t really remember anything from my last vorn. I was in a work accident. I tried reaching out to old coworkers, but they said I transferred out, wasn’t particularly close to anyone there, but if I had someone I got close to in the last Vorn, they haven’t reached out.”
Chromedome didn’t sound very bothered by it. Or at least he didn’t on the surface. He was a strange mech to read. Sometimes his emotions were easy to pick out, but he had noticed times where he just went completely numb in his inflection and actions.
“That’s rough, mech,” Jazz said sadly. It was mostly genuine.
He stopped himself from digging deeper. As much as he wanted to. He wanted to know more about whatever Chromedome was reading.
“What about you?” Chromedome asked.
“Me?”
“Yeah? What? You asked first.”
Jazz frowned. Chromedome looked up from the data pad.
“I’ve got a few mechs I’m close with, not a Conjunx or anything though. I was too busy to really ever think about even finding someone.”
“Same,” Chromedome said, “If the right mech came around, though, I don’t think I’d mind.”
Jazz had been too busy fighting behind the scenes with Orion for so long. He never really had time to think about stuff like that. He was always more concerned about his allies' safety. It wasn’t something he needed to worry as much about anymore.
“Yeah, I don’t think I’d mind either.”
The two of them lapsed into an awkward silence for a while. Chromedome was wrapped up in whatever the data pad was telling him. Jazz was curious to hear about what the mech was reading. But he was willing to be patient. He at least trusted Chromedome to bring up anything he deemed interesting.
Jazz privately hoped to get his own turn digging through the old files.
Maybe if he were lucky, the last owner stored some photos to show his partner. It would be interesting to see what the colony looked like when it was still standing.
Chromedome’s vents kicked into higher gear. He leaned forward. “Interesting,” He muttered.
“Find something good?” Jazz said eagerly.
“Maybe,” Chromedome said.
“He’s talking about how a mech went missing,” Chromedome said quietly. He adjusted his hold on the data pad and placed a servo on the underside of his helm.
“How’s that interesting? It’s sad, but the conditions here are pretty harsh. Easy enough for one mech to slip into the ocean.”
“The data pad’s owner said the mech was acting strange, muttering to himself. One morning, he just never showed up to complete his assigned tasks.”
“Does it say what happened to him?”
“I’m looking for that,” Chromedome said.
Chromedome started to scroll faster.
“This is bizarre,” Chromedome said, baffled.
“How so?”
“He just starts casually mentioning the missing mech again. Three cycles later, no mention between then and this entry about them finding him. If anything, he complains about a pile-up of work even though they had all been working overtime.”
Jazz tilted his helm. That didn’t sound normal.
“Huh.”
“Weird,” Chromedome muttered, “It’s almost like he forgot he was gone.”
“Maybe he wasn’t missing for that long?”
“No, he mentions him explicitly going missing; Rewind even mentioned being concerned about it. Then it shifts a few logs later to the mech being back like nothing happened. If he was that concerned, I would have assumed he would have left a note about him being found. He even mentions the same mech getting a virus the next cycle and missing his shift.”
“Freaky,” Jazz said.
It rang true of rumors he had heard from Optimus. About some of the shadier Senate activities. Rumors about bots having things done to their processors. The strange behavior some poor bot who crossed the Senate would have after mandatory therapy. It was a horrible thought to think some of that might have come from here.
Jazz already knew strange things happened here. The technorganics alone made it easy to assume other experiments could have been run even on the bots living in the colony at the time.
“These entries just get more bizarre the further along I go,” Chromedome muttered.
The storm raged outside. The sky had long since gone dark. The wind howled, and he could hear the snow and ice pelt the side of the building. The only light source they had was the data pad and a few scattered lanterns. That and the biting cold left the atmosphere of their little shelter feeling grim.
If Jazz was a weaker mech, he might have even been scared. But he was more interested in what could have happened. Anything that was done to the bots that were here couldn’t happen to them. The ones messing with the colonists had gone offline when the rest of the colonists vanished.
“The mech used images initially, but sometime after the third week, they started getting sparse before disappearing altogether. Then the logs kept getting shorter and shorter. At the start, they were multiple pages; where I am now, it's maybe a few paragraphs.”
“Could have just gotten busier, maybe,” Jazz suggested. “Always lots of work to do for a small colony like this one was,” Jazz wasn’t completely sold on his own theory yet.
Privately, he thought this was bizarre. He was going to report this back to Orion for one of his contacts to look deeper into.
Chromedome tapped a digit against the data pad’s screen, “Something about it just doesn’t seem right to me.”
Jazz wasn’t sure either. It sounded weird to him. If one of his old buddies had started acting like that, it would have been suspicious no matter the workload.
“I mean, it’s already pretty well known this colony was doing some shady science; who knows what they could have been doing to the mechs that lived here. Could have even messed with their processors.”
Chromedome was silent. He kept his visor so firmly on the data pad that Jazz wondered if there was something wrong with him.
“Chromedome?”
The mech remained silent. His visor dimmed. Jazz slowly stood up and walked over.
“Chromedome? You alright?”
Jazz pushed himself up. Chromedome still didn’t move. Jazz took a few steps until he stood over the other mech. He remained still. He remained silent. The only sound Jazz could hear coming from his frame was the quiet running of fans.
Jazz slowly reached a servo out.
“You alright?” Jazz asked.
Still no reaction. Chromedome was still stiffly staring down. Unmoving.
Jazz placed a hand on Chromedome’s shoulder armor and gently shook him.
“Hmm?” Chromedome snapped his helm up toward Jazz. “Sorry, I don’t’-”
Chromedome used a free servo to gently scratch at the back of his helm.
“I must have gotten a little lost in the reading,” Chromedome said flatly.
“You must have gotten really lost in it; I don’t even think I’ve seen my archivist friend zone out that hard at a data pad,” Jazz said.
“Do you want to take a look at it?” Chromedome asked.
“Are you at the end already?”
“No, but I think I need to take a break from it for a bit; I might try to recharge.”
Jazz took the data pad from Chromedome.
“I’ll give it back to you after you come out of recharge,” Jazz promised.
“Okay,” Chromedome still sounded flat.
There wasn’t any emotion or variation in his vocalizations. Jazz decided to just assume he was strange for now.
Chromedome adjusted his position against the wall, and his visor dimmed. His frame sagged against the wall as Chromedome entered a recharge cycle.
Jazz sat back down in his own little corner. The space was small, cramped, and dark. It brought up memories of harsher cycles for him on Cybertron.
Jazz flicked his gaze down at the data pad. The last entry Chromedome was looking at was a short one. The owner of the data pad, a bot that called himself Rewind, left a short message. He had gotten communications from Cybertron that the next transport to the planet would have his partner on it. But it was Deca-cycles away from even leaving for Gelu.
There were sparse records publicly available for this planet. But Jazz knew it didn’t last very long.
“Dominus, I don’t know if you were lucky or not,” Jazz mumbled to himself.
He didn’t think Rewind ever got to see his partner before he went offline.
An arachnid, a bee and a warlord

Arachnus never thought he’d end up like this.
Nor does he knew how this had happened, other than being betrayed and joining the decepticons because his so called ‘best friends’ had left him behind.
And now he happens to be the warlord’s best fighter (and lover) the decepticons have ever seen.
That fact made the mech’s smirk curl… but he’s not satisfied, no.
The spider prime wanted something more… but what? He’s tried everything, he tried to experiment, he tried training, heck!
He even tried searching for megatron when he was missing and the slagging allspark fragments! But nothing, the spider mech feels… what is he even feeling?!
He went through more rigorous training in order to get his mind off this estranged feeling.
But the more he did the more this feeling lingered, getting stronger and stronger with every slash and swipe. After some time, he felt someone trying to sneak up on him, he swung his axe and it was suddenly caught.
Aracnus’ optics meet with the warlords, this interaction made megatron chuckle.
“Almost took my helm clean off.” He jokes, making the arachnid prime huff before relaxing his frame. “Almost.” Arachnus parrots, standing down before the leader. “If you’ve come to spar, I’m not in the mood.” He confirms, walking past the warlord.
“Is there a problem, arachnus?” He finally asks, arching his optic at his conjunx. “Nothing, my lord.” He mutters, putting his primary weapon away.
He was about to walk out of the room, until he was suddenly picked up and placed on the tyrant’s palderon space. “Wha-?! Hey!!” He shouts, kicking and scratching the armour as megatron strides out and down the hall.
Arachnus hissed and growled, the unbothered decepticon walked onwards towards his resting quarters and put the spider prime on the berth.
“There. Now we’re alone.”
Megatron interprets, placing his servos on Arachnus’ palderons as he leans down to his height. “Will you tell me what’s wrong now?”
Arachnus hissed silently, before finally giving in. “… I feel strange.”
“How strange, my love?” He asks once more, letting his go to let him yell it out. “I feel… ugh! Can you not?! Y’know I hate this!” He shouts, turning away from the warlord. The tyrant all but sighed and sat next to his spiderbot.
“Y’know as well as I do that bottling this up doesn’t suit you.” He told Arachnus.
“It’ll keep on pestering, keep on growing until it bursts… don’t do this to yourself.” Megatron placed one servo back on his palderon. “Let it out.”
He waited… and waited… until he finally got that sigh in defeat as his lover’s beautiful four optics finally stared back at him.
“…. I feel empty.”
“Empty?” He asks in shock, Arachnus now suddenly in his lap and helm against his chassis.
Something unlike Arachnus unless it comes with sparing, play fighting and playful banter on both sides.
“Yes, I don’t know how this had started… but that’s how I feel.” He says, placing his servo on his own chassis before moving to the warlords.
“I see… do you think you can retrace your memories to see when you didn’t feel like this?” He asks. Arachnus… never thought about that before.
For quite a bit his mind went back to where he didn’t feel like this.
There was that Halloween night when he didn’t feel empty and when he fought elita- 1, he felt hurt… but not empty.
Then that time when they battled once again, he didn’t feel empty then.
And of course that time with the dinobots too, emptiness didn’t show up at all… maybe elita was making him feel this way…?
No. Arachnus felt empty when she faced him alone… it must be something else.
“… i didn’t feel that way when elita faced me, but when I faced her alone….” He paused, already feeling more emptier than before. “I understand.” Megatron nods, careful to not dwindle further into his past.
“Maybe it has something to do with the other bots.” He muses, Arachnus’ many optics widened at that. Megatron was right!
When he was captured the ninja and cadet bot for bait, he felt something!
“Mind pulling up the autobot files! I wanna see something.” He says suddenly, megatron shrugs and did as he’s told. (Tell. No one.) and Lo and behold, the autobot files he had got from shockwave.
Arachnus swiped passed swiftly through everyone’s profile- only pausing at sentinel’s to hiss at it- Arachnus finally managed to bring up elita’s crew.
Swiping through them for at least 5 seconds before moving on to another.
Arachnus took a good long look at the ninja bot profile before shaking his helm and moving onto the next one.
The spider stared at it for another long while… actually, he stared at that one longer than the ninja. Megatron took notice of this after 29 minutes, the leader shook Arachnus out of his daze and the spider stared up at the mech.
“Are you alright Arachnus?” He asks, the half-organic nodded before looking back at the minibot once more. “I know what I want now.” He says, turning off the device megatron used prior before turned towards him.
His main limbs wrapped around the warlord’s neck guard, both bots stared face to face, he then said something very unusual… but not unwarranted.
“… I want a bitlet. And I know which one I want already.”
Megatron chuckled at the request, he might know just what to do with a simple request like that. “And it shall be done… when the time is right.”
Arachnus perked up with surprise by the warlord’s answer.
“Have you… thought about having sparklings?” His endurae asks, hesitant but hopeful of a positive answer.
“Not at first….” He admits, gently holding one of Arachnus’ extra limbs. “However, an organic scientist may have activated my parental protocols on accident, might as well put them to good use.” He answers
With Arachnus now happy with the answer the two decepticons sat there making out, Arachnus’ hands on his faceplate while his servos on his waist.
There are many reasons he chose Arachnus to be by his side as such.
But the biggest reason is thus…
He likes the way the half- organic thinks.

… yeah I think we all know where this is going.
Here we have another megop with Arachnus prime and some kidnap to adopt sprinkled in there. Why?
… I got inspired by the Arachnus stuff that I saw, both the art and the fanfics and thought this is the perfect way to illustrate an evil megop and their autobot son the surprise adopt!
And also I needed to write more megop in the long run cause I haven’t done a single one-.
Anyways! What day y’all think?
