A kindred soul searching for connection, tired and world-weary, far more alike to you than the outward differences. He lay his face against your thigh, looking up at you with unguarded adoration. You rested your hand on him, and his smile deepened at your touch, cheek dimpling as it tightened beneath your palm.

Joy and gratitude blossomed bright and vivid in your veins like daffodils, filling the empty spaces inside of you with spring blooms. König said he didn’t believe in fate, but you were beginning to wonder if you did. Despite all your missteps, the foolish mistakes that risked so much, the bond you shared with König had grown in ways you never anticipated, pulling you both together into something that was edging closer and closer to—

Your heart quieted in trepidation as you refused to acknowledge the word hovering just out of reach, unspoken but undeniable.

You knew what you and König shared wasn’t —

could not be —

but was beginning to feel like—

more.
