Mona Lisa Smile by Alison Marks
The artist noted for this piece, this diptych addresses the exclusion of Northwest Coast art from the canon of mainstream, Western art history. It also speaks to the prevalence of the male gaze in many iconic images of women. The mask represents land otters. In Tsimshian mythology, land otters would often take the form of beautiful women, appearing to unsuspecting men to steal them away.
