headcanoning time as i'm writing.
when maleficent and diaval are off the castle entrance, why exactly does diaval tell maleficent that the guards are pulled down and that they won't get out the castle alive, if he knows they will go inside anyway? sure, he is warning her of the awaiting danger — but assuming he's been spying all these years and telling her of the castle affairs, she knows stefan's been plotting iron traps already. and say she doesn't, even taking that aside, what does he expect her to answer? why is he saying that?
sooo my sad take is that he's scared and he's low-key trying to share his feelings :( like guys :(
it's not as evident in the movie because they changed his lines to "i need you, diaval. i can't do this without you, diaval". which are good lines, because him being vain and cheeky even in the face of danger is funny, and you can go rampant with headcanons as to whether she has actually ever told him that and that's why he's teasing her and blah blah blah.
but in the book he wishes she'd say, “please come with me, diaval. we can do anything as long as we’re together.” which is similar in vibes, yes, but there's that layer of encouragement in the second sentence, you know? he prompted her to say they can get out alive, that they can do this together.
and she just ignored that prompt lol diaval baby STAND UP
