The Thanos Quest began with the first issue having a cover date of September 1990. The issue marked the first time the soul gems were called the Infinity gems. Thanos sought them out so he could kill half the universe. In the issue, he appeared to kill Champion of the Universe (Tryco Slatterus) and Gardner (Ord Zyonz). Thanos took possession of his first three gems (power, soul, and time). The issue also introduced the Nexus of Reality and saw the destruction of the planet Tamarata. In the city of Planet Znrrgax IV, the alien robbers are terrorizing the rich alien manufacturer until Powerstone (Prince Otherone, formerly known as Prince of Power) jumps in and foils the robbery. However, the poor rich alien is injured from being crushed in the car by Powerstone's surprise landing. Powerstone easily fends off the alien robbers until he meets Champion, the strongest Elder of the Universe. At the office, Thor has a meeting with Blackjack O'Hare who is now running his mercenary business. Blackjack O'Hare laments that his mercenary business is in shambles because his hired employee - Powerstone keeps messing up his job in heroics. Then, they are interrupted by Powerstone crashing into the office from fighting Champion.

When Champion comes into the office, Thor tries to keep the Elder of the Universe from interrupting them by holding him down with his Mjolnir. Unfortunately, Powerstone screws up by touching the Mjolnir with his finger that sent him and Champion crashing through several floors down to the basement of the office building. Just as Thor and Blackjack reach the basement, they see Champion is holding the unconscious Powerstone. Thor gets his Mjolnir back, only to have his wrist broken from the impact and the heavy weight, allowing Champion to clobber him. Thor summons a raindrop to wake Powerstone up and he tells him to fight Champion the another way. As Champion is distracted, Powerstone concentrates with his thinking and he defeats the Elder of the Universe by draining his strength. Powerstone is stronger than ever but Blackjack fires him from his job. While Thor manages to get his wrist healed with the Asgardian All-Power magic, Powerstone now changes his name to Apex.
