In the 1860s, skirt sizes reached their apex due to the invention of the cage crinoline in the late 50s. This eliminated the need for many layers of peticoats to achieve this silhouette. These skirts were so large that they were the subject of criticism for the amount of space they took up in public life. Tight lacing was not practiced at this time, as the volume of the skirt made the waist seem small by comparison. The 1860s also saw a huge increase in the use of the sewing machine, especially due to the need for ready-to-wear military uniforms for the American Civil War.
