SodorGust Day 28 - Authority
Jack absent-mindedly dug away at bits of the old coarse dirt. Byron stood nearby, having levelled out the section Jack was working in.
“Make sure you get everything!” Byron ordered. “They can’t pave new asphalt over uneven terrain!”
“Isn’t that Buster’s job? Rolling the ground smooth?”
Byron glared. “He comes in after the asphalt has been laid.”
Jack rolled his eyes, and went back to clearing bits of dirt in preparation for the new road.
The belting of two horns made them both jump.
“Slow down you idiots!” Byron snapped.
“And crawl around like you do?” Max retorted. He and Monty cackled as they sped past.
“The nerve of those two.” The bulldozer growled. “Why can’t they do what I tell them? They’ll listen to Kelly, but never to me.”
“That’s because you boss us around.” Jack said, bluntly. Jack had no sense of fear, which Byron did respect in a sense. Here, though, it just irritated him.
“My only aim is that our work is done thoroughly and with precision. Not to mention, I do just as much around here as anyone else. Perhaps even-”
“Oh please not the ‘most important’ charade again.” Jack groaned. “Besides, Kelly does plenty of heavy lifting, even if they’re not always on site for a lot of the work.”
“Miss. Jenny doesn’t even put Kelly in charge, does she?” Byron continued. “They just assume the role.”
“Kelly doesn’t seem like that sort.” Jack countered. “If anything, they’re the main voice of reason around here.”
Byron huffed, and continued to sulk as Jack went about his work.
