BJJ Practice #11
05/07/15
As part of warm ups we did some pummeling drills. I don’t think I’ve ever tried pummeling before but it was a bit more awkward for me than I thought it would be. The timing on going for an arm drag or a pass under to the back was challenging. I guess I might need to practice it more than once before I master it. Haha.
Then we reviewed attacking the turtle position. One I had missed was reaching under and through to the opposite arm and pushing through to turn them over. Then we worked on the knee entry to shoulder lock to arm bar to roll over and choke transitions that I learned Tuesday. And finally he showed a collar attack opening the far lapel with your far hand and then using your knee to help push your near hand in and under to grab the collar. Then put your weight on them and walk around to the front for the clock choke.
Then we rolled. I rolled with 2 different people. I took the back with the first guy and had a pretty good grip on the collar but couldn't finish the choke. I asked James about it and he said if I can just pull straight down on the other collar too it will work better. He also told the guy I was attacking not to grab the collar to defend - instead pull down on the attacking arm. My next roll was with a 4 stripe white belt and I was (finally) able to get a tap with an americana! He might have let me get it to a certain extent. James said I needed to turn his wrist like a motorcycle grip to help the lock. He also told us the escape was to pull yourself down so you can straighten your arm.
We are going to work on getting out of the turtle position next week...
