Just saw your post on height. I'm 5'10" and every time I hear an author wax poetic about how tall a dude who is less than 6' is makes me snort. Like... I am average height for a guy, my fave kpop dude is Kim Seokjin from BTS and he is my exact height. It makes me wonder if these writers just like the societally enforced idea of being tiny next to a guy? I'm not even the tallest woman I know. So unless all Western kpop fans are shrimps, I think it's compensating due to negative societal messages about women and height.
hi there!! i completely agree with all of this. i think part of it is people projecting themself onto what they write, which is fine as long as they put warnings (ie she/her pronouns, mentioning reader has x characteristic) BEFORE the fic. i’m somewhat okay with that (even if i don’t like it) because i’ll acknowledge people are writing for the general population of fanfic readers and not specifically for me.
i also do think there’s a sense of negativity or at least an unserious nature to women being taller in the relationship. it’s seen as demasculating to be a man in a relationship with a taller woman. i remember seeing a tiktok that said, ‘oh well you’ll be taller and you won’t be able to wear heels and you wont feel like his woman’ and there’s just so much that’s problematic about that.
i think that women are always going to be berated or made fun of or teased or not taken seriously for any little thing they do or are. short girls are seen as cute but aren’t taken seriously and are made fun of, tall girls are taken seriously but are seen as less feminine and men won’t date them unless they’re ‘into that’ as if my height is a fetish. honestly nobody wins in this situation.
