Morgan Geyser was born on May 16th, 2002 in Waukesha, Wisconsin to Matt and Angie Geyser and grew up in the area of Waukesha Wisconsin for most of her life. She was often described as smart, capable, and relaxed up until about fourth grade. After the fourth grade, she began to act less like herself and ore immersed and obsessed with the growing popularity of the Creepypasta “Slenderman” / “Slender Man”, as well as an immense interest with suicide, she also began to believe that “Slendeman” was coming for her. At this point, her friends / classmates began to distance themselves from Morgan after she began to brandish herself with a sledgehammer and claiming that she could do whatever she wanted with it.
There isn’t much known about Anissa Weier’s childhood / background before the stabbing, only that she was born on the 10th of November, 2001 to Bill and Kristi Weier and that she also grew up in the same area of Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Morgan and Anissa met at sixth grade while attending Horning Middle School. The two became obviously, and increasingly close with both girls bonding over their shared interest in the fictional character “Slenderman”. It became easy for the two to spend significant amounts of time together and to look at “Slender Man” fanart and read related Creepypastas.
During their time at school, both girls experienced bullying and severe social alienation. Morgan was widely described as a lonely misfit and an outsider at school who had issues making friends. Before the two became friends, it was reported that Anissa was also known to be mean and/or cruel to others, even punching Morgan at their shared bus stop before they began bonding over their love of horror stories. Morgan was equally targeted by school bullies, which began to intertwine with her severe and undiagnosed early-onset schizophrenia and autism. Being neurodivergent and having unrecognised mental illness that meant she couldn’t recognise reality from fiction made her a highly visible and easy target for bullying. Peers from her school described Morgan and her small social group as “misfits”. Other classmates, particularly girls, would find her “childish” and began to weaponise her interest in fiction to mock her.
Payton Leutner was born on the 13th of February, 2002 in Waukesha, Wisconsin to Stacie and Joe Leutner. Payton was defined by remarkable academic excellence as she led a friendly and compassionate childhood, alongside this she was also known as gentle and an empathetic child who regularly advocated for alienated peers. While in the fourth grade, Payton had befriended Geyser after noticing her sitting alone, believing that everyone deserved a friend.
Payton had maintained a close two-year friendship with Morgan and even described Morgan as creative and funny despite her growing obsession with internet Creepypastas and “Slenderman”. In the months leading up to the 31st of may 2014, Payton had become increasingly uncomfortable and worried with Morgan’s fixation on “Slenderman”, despite this, she decided to stay friends with Morgan out of a strong sense of loyalty. Although Payton was not particularly close to Anissa, she accepted her presence and her growing friendship with Morgan.
Morgan and Anissa had spent five months planning the murder and establishing code words to keep their plan secret. The two girls had began to discuss their plot in public, at school, and on the school bus, deciding to only speak in whispers. The two had begun to use code words like “cracker” (as earlier stated) to refer to their weapon, and the word “itch” to refer to the actual act of killing Payton, along with the phrase “camping trip” to refer to the actual act of running away to flee to the Nicolet National Forest.
The two had expected to never have to come back home, they both packed their school bags with practical supplies which they believed they’d need to survive the trek up north through the Nicolet National Forest to find the “Slender Mansion”, they also began to gather tools to commit the crime, including the duct tape they intended to use to restrain Payton in her sleep.
Along with the in person planning and collecting of supplies, Anissa also began to actively research internet horror forums and crime stories. She explicitly looked up strategies on how to commit murder, discovering some advise which stated that it’s be much easier to successfully kill people while they were asleep, which directly influenced the choice for 2:00 AM of the initial plan.
The attack was originally meant to take place on the 30th of May, 2014 when Morgan had suggested a sleepover with Anissa to celebrate Payton’s 12th birthday. While Payton was under the impression that this was a normal sleepover, Anissa and Morgan had been plotting and scheduled this sleepover with intent to finally execute their murder plot.
Morgan and Anissa both agree on the plan of inviting Payton to the sleepover under the guise of a birthday sleepover, and to wait until Payton had fallen asleep, tape her mouth shut and to slit her throat along with stabbing her in the neck at exactly 2:00AM as they both believed that it was the optimal time to kill Payton as she would be in deep sleep. Alongside the vulnerability with being in the state of deep sleep, both of the girls had consumed a lot of media telling them that the hours between 2:00 AM and 3:00AM are heavily associated with supernatural activity, which further fuled their delusional beliefs that they could become Slenderman’s ‘Proxies’. If the original plan had failed, both also agreed on an alternate plan of luring Payton into the bathroom under the guise of getting ready, claiming that the bathroom’s floor drain would make cleaning up blood easier.
The night of the 30th of May, 2:00AM had arrived and Morgan (who was agreed to be the one to actually kill Payton) had found herself unable to go through with the original plan, and she later told police that she “wanted to give Payton one more morning”. After the initial plan had been compromised, Anissa had suggested that the three should wait until the next morning and to take Payton to play hide-and-seek at David’s Park, arguing that the woods would make it easier to hide the body and also escape easier.
They had planned to kill Payton then immediately flee the scene and walk roughly 300 miles (or 480 km) north to the Nicolet National Forest where they genuinely believed the fictional “Slender Mansion” was located. Despite packing survival supplies like granola bars, water, and extra clothes, the girls had no real concept of the distance, potential weather issues, and terrain. They had believed that “Slenderman” would immediately protect them and provide for them once they arrived.
On the morning of the 31st May, the three girls went to David’s Park, where Anissa had suggested that the three should go to play in the heavily wooded area adjacent to the park for a better and more intense game of hide-and-seek. Once the three were ready to play with Morgan as the ‘seeker’, Anissa had told Payton to cover herself with dirt and leaves as part of the game, to hide better. While Payton was under the impression that Anissa was going to hide somewhere else, Anissa had actually gone to urge Morgan to initiate the attack by whispering another code, “Go berserk.”. Morgan had managed to find Payton and pulled out a five-inch kitchen knife out of her backpack and tackled Payton before stabbing her 19 times in the arms, legs, abdomen, and chest.
One of the stab wounds had narrowly missed her heart by less than a millimetre (when measured it was missed by the width of a human hair), while one of the other stab wounds had penetrated her liver. While Payton was screaming and crying, Morgan and Anissa had told her to lie still and be quiet because she would loose less blood that way. Both Morgan and Anissa had promised that they were going to eave to get help, while in reality, they were already planing to flee the scene and begin making their way to where they believed the fictional “Slender Mansion” was located.
Roughly after 5 hours, Payton had managed to crawl out of the woods and drag herself to a nearby asphalt road where Greg Steinberg who was bicycling spotted her lying in the grass, heavily bleeding and struggling to breathe. He immediately called emergency services. Payton was taken to a hospital less than four miles away, where surgeons operated on her for six hours.
Anissa and Morgan walked about 4.9 miles (7.9 km) from the scene before being found and captured. The Police found the girls near a Steingafels furniture store, off Interstate 94 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. They were still carrying the weapon in their backpack, they had completed less than 3% of their intended journey. The arresting officers noted that both Morgan and Anissa appeared calm and “kind of meek”, completely lacking and of the panic and remorse they would expect. When approached by the Waukesha County sheriff’s deputies, they did not resist, instead they completely complied with officer’s demands and orders and allowed the officers to search their bags where they found the weapon.
Both girls didn’t hesitate to confess, though both Anissa and Morgan seemed willing to confess, Anissa expressed feeling more torn about the stabbing, “The bad part of me wanted her to die. But the good part of me wanted her to live.”, while Morgan plainly admitted “We were trying to kill her.” The girls waited approximately 3 years and 4 months after initial questionings due to their defence attorneys repeatedly appealing the case in hopes of having it moved to a juvenile court. Since Wisconsin law states that children as young as 10 charged with severe crimes automatically start in adult court, the judges spent the time between questioning and the first trial reviewing psychiatric evaluations.
Anissa Weier was tried first and her case went to a jury trial in September 2017, 3 years and 4 months after questioning, where she was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Morgan Geyser was scheduled for a trial in October of 2017, however she reached a plea agreement in September 2017 to avoid a jury trial, which led to her being committed to an institutional facility.
Both were sent to Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Geyser was sentenced to 25-years maximum commitment, while Morgan received 40-year maximum commitment. Anissa spent 3 years in the institution, complying with psychiatric treatment and slowly showing stability and in 2021 she successfully petitioned the court for community release, and today she lives with her father under supervision along with a GPS ankle tracker while still receiving psychiatric treatment. She is also required to submit to continuous state oversight until her sentence ends in 2039.
Meanwhile, Morgan’s initial 3 petitions for release were denied by judges who deemed her schizophrenia treatment incomplete. In 2025 she received a conditional release, where she was moved into a highly supervised group home in Madison, Wisconsin. On the 22nd of November 2025, Morgan cut off her electronic monitoring bracelet and escaped the group home with another member. The next day she was captured by the police at a truck stop in Posen, Illinois. In December 2025, Morgan was sent back to her institutional psychiatric care to serve the remainder of her 40-years term. Under Wisconsin state guidelines, she cannot petition for release again until mid-2026.
