I'm a linguistics + psychology double major. I'm aware of what's in the corner of my eyes, what and who is around me, but judgement is not something I routinely take part in. I'm curious, but I know when my advances are not welcome. How do you think I'd do at Elsewhere? Think I'd last a year?
You spend too much money onfresh fruit – not the somewhat pallid melon and berries in the dining hall, butmangoes, blackberries, passionfruit. The juice runs down to your elbows. Theburn of summer sun blooms on your tongue. You are still hungry. You are stillso hungry. You bit into fruit once at a revel. You took care not to eat it butyou bit into it, out of curiosity, and the juice that ran down your chin wasbright and tart and sweet, and it reminded you of sunlight shifting through thetree’s canopy, the slight relief of shade in heavy sunbaked air, the whine ofunseen insects, the wash of relief in a lavender twilight. You did not eat thefruit, but you are still cold, and so so hungry, and you are beginning to thinkyou’ve made a mistake.
