On this Friday the 13th, I will spread more Monster High 13 Wishes propaganda. Thinking abt how 13 Wishes is thee best monster high movie again lol. The way the movie begins by introducing Gigi and Whisp, then Howleen and Twyla, and then Howleen and Clawdeen (and a hint of Cleo and Nefera). The way the mirror cracks into thirteen pieces after Gigi interferes to stop her own shadow sister. The way Howleen sees her reflection🪞 change to her shadowy shelf as she scrubs at it, before she rubs the lamp in the attic. This reflection scares her and she accidentally knocks the mirror over, cracking it. Literally foreshadowing with reflected light. Plus, it's seen as bad luck to break a mirror. There's a symmetry to the story bc, at the end of the movie, Howleen looks in the, once shattered, now pieced together mirror and sees her true reflection🪞. The entire theme of mirrors ate so bad! Also, the way the entire story is set around moon phases. The way that Howleen is at her weakest point when there's a solar* eclipse and Whisp is at her strongest. It invokes yin and yang imagery. Ofc to clarify, Howleen's moreso vulnerable bc Monster High alienates her instead of welcoming her and bc Whisp knows the feeling too well and manipulates her with it. The way Howleen gains clarity and understands Whisp bc they're alike and that's why Twyla's her ghoulfriend. The way Twyla and Whisp get powers from shadows and Howleen gets power from the moon/moonlight. Yin and yang imagery again! Additionally, the movie flips the black cat omen trope on its head and instead Catty Noir's introduction signifies a happy ending!!!! The way Catty is a black star and descends in a flying carpet wearing a shiny cracked mirror outfit design almost like a shooting star coming down from the sky (ofc shooting stars aren't technically stars but anyways I like the wish theme of it all)! Something, something, Catty being a black werecat (half black girl and half black cat in my head btw) and rejecting black girl and black cat slander and reclaiming her identity!!! Additionally, Gigi and Twyla having a very familiar and positive relationship with the shadows reminds the audience darkness itself isn't evil. The movie's emphasis on darkness/shadow positivity and agency vs being boxed in or erased overshadowed without agency. It's so beautiful like ughhhhh!!! And I'm pissed Howleen isn't on the cover of her fucking movie!!! Also, we were robbed of Howleen, Catty, Gigi, and Whisp having pink afro styles!
