Nobody had ever actually talked about it. Your constant need to always do extreme things. Name it you’ve done it. From skydiving to longboarding down a hill in a ridiculous tempo. You had moved to LA for the waves. That’s what you told everybody. And conveniently enough, your best friend Ashton lived there, so you crashed there, expecting him to be away for most of the time. But you didn’t expect him to actually be home. The last two years he had been traveling the world, and that’s kind of what you expected him to do. It didn't last very long. You had not taken into account that he would stay in LA to write out a third album. So instead of having time to shake the stupid school girl crush off, you were left with a lot more time to fall for him.
It was a little before sunrise when you woke up. No sunrays shining through the window and no warm gust of wind flowing through the slightly open window. Regardless, you sat up in the bed and rubbed the sleep from your eyes. Swinging you legs over the side of the bed, you winced as you put them down in the cold floor. Padding over to the chair where you kept all your clothes, that were not to dirty, you picked up a hoodie and pulled it over your head. Next on was a pair of fluffy socks and grey sweatpants. Unplugging your phone from the charger you saw you already had a message from Luke.
05:10 Ready for a morning sesh?
05:17 Yup, be here in 20?
You set the phone down as you started on a simple bowl of some surprisingly good porridge Ashton usually made for breakfast. It usually was only when both of you were home in the morning. You jumped a little when your phone pinged as you set the pan to boil.
Rushing to your back porch you quickly took down your cold wetsuit and the surfboard that stood leaned up against the wall. you then jogged through the house to put it up against the wall in front of the driveway, so Luke could put it in the Jeep he drove for surfing. You hurried back into the kitchen to take the now finished porridge off the stove, and poured into a bowl and sat down on the kitchen island as you ate. When you finished you put the dishes in the dishwasher and headed to your bedroom to change into a bikini.
As you tied the string around your neck, you heard your door creek open. You turned around as you pulled the same hoodie over your head, welcoming the warmth.
Ashton spoke as your head poked free from the sweater.
You looked down at yourself before meeting his eyes. Then you realised that the olive green vans hoodie you had pulled on did not belong to you at all. You felt warmth spreading all the way from your neck and up to your cheeks. It did not help that he was dressed in only boxers.
"Sorry, did you want it back?"
He smiled at you, and shook his head.
"There is some porridge left if you want some, otherwise I have to go really soon."
Just as you uttered the last word, your phone pinged again. You looked down as you swiped it open and looked at the message.
"Actually, I have to go now."
You smiled sheepishly, and rushed out the door, Ashton following you.
He looked down on you, with a crease between his brows, his never failing curiosity showing.
"I'm just going for a quick morning surf with Luke. Fuck, hand me that bag will you?"
You spoke as you pointed to the black bag you almost forgot, that was sitting on the floor. He handed it to you and looked on in wonder as you rummaged through it to see that you had all you needed.
"Bye, I'll see if we make it back before you head to the studio."
The wave you gave him did not quite seem to be enough for him, as he looked at you with something like disappointment in his eyes.
Luke asked as you fiddled with your phone on the way to a secluded beach you had found a while a go. The waves there were not too big here.
"I guess? What does that mean?"
"Well, a few days ago Ash brought a girl home, I felt completely and utterly pathetic, it was as if the bottom of my stomach dropped to the ground."
Your phone slipped to you lap, to cover your face with your hands.
"Ash has always been to blind to see what is right in front of him, don’t stress it, he will either come around, or you will have to make the first move."
"Oh no, I'm not going to make any moves. What if he doesn't like me like that?"
The frustration in your exclamation was obvious.
"Well, if he ever brings girls over, you are more than welcome to come to my place"
There he goes again, new flavour of the evening screaming his name over and over, as you were trying to sleep. Your heart kept clenching and tears were pricking at the back of your eyes. Before you even realized completely what you were doing, you sat behind the wheel of your cheap slightly beat up pic up truck. It didn’t quite fit in on this street, but it did everything you asked it to do. So when you pulled up to Luke's driveway you quickly pulled up the hand brake, took the keys out of the ignition, and stepped out of the car.
When Luke opened the door, he was wearing a pair of flannel pants and a grey hoodie, paired with a sleepy face.
"I'm sorry, I didn't really look at the time and all, but Ashton has this chick over and I couldn’t really do-"
Luke cut off your mini rant, by pulling you into the house and closing the door behind you.
"Look, I know it sucks and all, but if you really can't take it anymore, you should try talking to him about it. Not necessarily tell him you like him, but that you don’t appreciate him bringing home girls every night."
You looked at down at your hands, before meeting his eyes over the coffee table. You knew he was right, and you could not keep on doing this to your self. Being aroud him just kept on giving you more hope, that didn't really exist.
"Okay, tomorrow after I've gone back."
You sat staring at the door, from inside you car for what felt like hours, when in reality it was probably a couple of minutes. Stepping out from the car, you walked inside silently. Going straight to your bedroom only to see Ashton standing smack dab at the centre of the room with your phone in his hands.
"Where the fuck have you been?"
To put it simply, Ashton looked angry. That was about the last drop for you.
"That's none of your business"
The words came out silently, but sharp. You really did not want to start a fight.
"Of course it's my business, you are my best friend, you can't just disappear, and not tell me"
He exclaimed as he stepped closer to you. Your stomach dropped yet again as he called you "best friend"
Defiance was clear in your voice. You stepped closer to him
"I will not watch you, what if something happens to you?"
Ashton almost sounded worried, and frustrated.
"I was at Luke's, I could't sleep."
The look in his eyes was definitely worried now.
"You could have come in to my room, i would't have minded."
"You would have minded alright, you and that chick you had over. I just can't do this anymore."
He went red all over, there was no doubt about it. But there was a questioning look to his eyes.
"Forget what i just said. I'll see if Luke has a spare room or some shit."
All the fight you had previously had in you, had now gone. You felt tired, and just wanted to get out of this house. Not Ashton though, it would seem like he had a little more left in him.
"No, you are telling me what's bothering you, you can talk to me."
And there it was, he was always the understanding, forgiving type.
"Not this one, let it go Ashton"
That ought to have hurt, you never called him Ashton, usually it was just "Ash"
He all but yelled. Thats when it boiled over for you completely, and every second thought seemed to fall away.
"Cause I'm in love with you, I'm in over my head, and I can't live here when you only see me as your best friend. I'm sorry I've-"
Suddenly, his lips were on yours, you got the same rush you get after you've caught a wave. Everything else just seemed to fall away, everything felt right. For a second. You pushed him away.
"I don't want your pity Ash"
"This isn't pity, this is love. I've been trying to push away this crush I've had on you for ages. You just hung out with Luke so much, i thought you might like him."
You felt a pang of guilt in your chest.
"Looks like we are both at fault here"
The thought that this was reality seemed a little unreal. And unlike every other romance and relation, every other thing that had happened to you in your life, this felt different. you wanted to do this differently.
"Can we just take it slow though? I don't want to rush this"
The feeling of embarrassment could not quite be shaken. Ashton carefully put a finger under your chin and lifted it up, so your eyes met his.
"Of course we can take this slow"
Nobody really talked about it now, your need to slow down sometimes, and how Ashton helped with that. He encouraged your activities and sports, but he helped you mellow it out when it was needed.
