I just bound what is essentially THE Merlin continuation/ fix it fic also know as 'And Like the Cycle of the Year we Begin Again' and I am so happy with how it turned out! It’s my first time trying a keyhole cutout style cover and it was a bit of a challenge with the faux leather, but I think in the end it came together. I do wish I would have seen Beth’s Binderys video on which glue to use so that your endpapers (dye ink) don’t bleed but ohh well I still love them! If anyone has any other tips on that particular issue I am all ears!

This was so so much fun to make and combine so many different elements into one bind! As we all know from pervious experience with my binds, I took a theme and ran so this is entirely black and green for absolutely no reason. I wanted to post it in time for Halloween but I didn’t take pictures in time… boo👎 👻
My favorite things about this project was getting to finally try my hand at entirely black pages for the entire typeset and printing my art on watercolor paper for the cover! I love the texture the watercolor paper brings to the smooth cover.
My printer did eat like half a ream of paper in the process of printing the black out pages but it’s all for the love of the game 😎 since I’m coming up on my 3 year binding anniversary in December (technically that’s only when I started and I didn’t make my first book until January, but it’s coming up okay) I wanted to really start pushing some of my creative boundaries, so this was really fun!

I think of this as a 2nd edition, because while I adore mara's design, I did my own typeset and wanted to try adding a few new features and extras, such as:

the files have been prepared for printing into a physical book. this includes:
starting pages on the right-hand side
page counts for 12-page signatures
.125”/3.175mm of bleed
1”/2.54cm inner margin for ease of reading when pages are bound
after finishing GHD, I was thinking of binding it when I stumbled across @thetempleofmara’s original design, and I loved it so much - the font choices, the high fantasy style, the illustrations. the passion and sweat put into fanworks like GHD and mara's design has always been my inspiration.
as a designer, you never really make stuff for yourself that you personally like. I really wanted to design a book for my eyes, I wanted that challenge. I actually finished the typeset in a frenzy (~2 years ago), but this is my first time actually binding a book, so I worked on it off and on again until I actually got my shit together and actually finished it. I actually made 2 copies (4 books in total): a set to practice on, and the final product that you see here!
test-printing to check font sizes/spacing
after typesetting and testing, which took the bulk of the time spent on this, I printed mara's cover designs out onto paper and transferred it to the book cloth in gold foil using a foil quill. I wanted to do some custom spine designs, but at this point I was just so tired that I decided that, hey, done is better than perfect. and I really like how they turned out - I didn't expect them to be so heavy, though! xD
designer's log (warning: very long and rambly)
I did not do any editing of the original text such as spell-checking, save for deleting extra spaces and other small touches. to me, the small flaws are valuable, a visible mark of how the work was made.
I did my own typeset of the entire manuscript, removing dangling words at the beginning and end of paragraphs/pages. this makes the text much smoother to read.
all hyphens used for a pause in speech have been replaced with em-dashes (—). this is how it's done in traditional books, and my personal preference :P
in the table of contents, in keeping with the traditional, Eragon-esque high fantasy style of the book, the nsfw warnings appended to each chapter title have been changed to the fashionable and eminently stylish “dagger”.
the glossary now has a style guide. it's........... very long.
added a colophon, a traditional blurb at the back of the book that is basically about how it was made. including a colophon is a designerly sign that a lot of care and effort went into the book!
the body text is 11pt, which is on the larger side. but for a long text like GHD, I opted for a more comfortable and inviting reading experience.
changed the placement of many illustrations so they appear in the part of the story where they are mentioned.
there is exactly ONE full-spread image and I am excited for you to find it :DD
It's still Binderary! Time to share a new project, and this one was SO fun, both in typesetting and design.
I had absolutely not planned it in my Binderary projects, but it was love at first sight. If you follow my main, you probably noticed that I am enamored with @scorp2510's HSR/VLD crossover, in which Keith is declared Killed In Action. His dying body was actually found by the crew of the Astral Express, who brought him to Herta Space Station so he could be regenerated.
File Code: HSS-CR-Δ-07 is the story of this treatment (...and mistreatment), told through medical reports written by researchers of Herta's Space Station.
The design of the cover is directly inspired by the icon for readables from the game. I went for a three-piece binding, with a rather absurdly round spine to try and create the "clipboard" effect, on which I added glued pieces of perlescent paper for the "copper-like" part of it.
The inside is where the fun is, OF COURSE.
Questionnaire, handwritten notes, report headers?
This fic has it all and it allowed me to go ALL OUT with my typesetting fancies. I could go full pseudo-scrapbooking fashion.
Font-wise, I picked:
- a classic Courier New for the body, which seemed to fit the stern appearance of medical reports
- DIN for internal notes, since it's the font used in the game
- the HSR Universal Script for the titles. I made myself a font from the characters on the Honkai Star Rail wiki, so it was easier to type full words.
- Blossoming Constellation by Letterhanna Studio for Ruan Mei.
- Biro Script by ingoFont for the nameless researcher as well as the checked boxes in the questionnaire (they're V and L that I just toyed with to try and make look more natural. It only came to me afterwards that I might as well have printed the sheet and ticked things by hand. Ah well.)
- Evening Wind by Khurasan for Asta's handwriting
- the incredibly fun Redacted Script by Christian Naths for signatures
The handwritten fonts were chosen to try and match the vibe of the handwritten notes on some of the in-game readables:
For the endpages, I reused the Galra font I made for another scrapbook-like Voltron Legendary Defender project from a few months ago, in which I wrote the Credo of the Trailblaze from the lyrics of the song Interstellar Journey. It felt an appropriate way to convey the crossover: Keith is a half-Galra who becomes a Nameless. I just plastered another HSS logo on it for good measure. Since I re-drew this to have a vectorised version, I might as well make it count, right?
Overall, as usual, quite a lot of FAAFO. I can't get enough :)
