Roman flew with determination over the city. This was it. His big moment.

Or perhaps, his biggest moment. Though it would never compare to the millions of moments he had gotten to spend with his boyfriend, at least not to him. He would miss Virgil.

He glared up at the swirling mass in the sky. The local supervillain Deceit had opened it. Now, someone needed to close it before something other than rocks came out of it. Not that the rocks weren’t bad, they had damaged a lot of infrastructure and caused a few minor injuries. But there was no telling where the portal led, anything could come out.

Roman's train of thought was interrupted as he was tackled out of the sky by a purple blur. The hero stood on the roof of a building brushing off his red and gold suit before turning towards his attacker, “Virgil...” he said cautiously.

The man ripped off his mask, “Don’t Virgil me! What the fuck are you thinking” Roman looked into his eyes desperately. “Virgil I have to do this” tears welled up in the vigilante's eyes, “No you don’t” he cried, grabbing Roman's arm, “Logic is working on closing it off-site. He’s close, I promise”

Roman shook his head, “By the time Logic closes the portal, anything could have come through" Virgil tightened his grip, “that does not warrant flying into it! You could die! I can’t lose you” Virgil sobbed. Roman reached up to cup Virgil's face but the taller hero pushed his hand away.

“You can’t do that! You can’t sacrifice yourself for no good reason and act like you’re doing the right thing” Virgil argued desperately. Roman shook his head, “It is a good reason. I need to keep people safe”

Logic’s voice rang from Virgil's suit, “Anxiety. We have a problem, Deceits blocking me. This may take longer than anticipated” Virgil inhaled sharply, “Roman” he pleaded, but Roman had already wrenched his hand away.

“Fine! You can go! Play whatever role you think you were supposed to play. But why? Why did you let me love you if you were just gonna run off and get yourself killed?” Virgil sobbed. Roman looked back at the pleading man, “I’m sorry” he whispered and disappeared into the city sky.

“-Reports of a body falling when the portal closed. Law enforcement are searching for the hero’s remains for a pro-” Virgil screamed and threw the television to the ground, breaking the screen. The glass lay among shards of a porcelain mug Virgil shattered moments before. “Well that wasn’t very nice,” Logan said from his spot on the couch.

Virgil just glared at him. “Hurting yourself won't bring him back,” Logan said as kindly as he could, reaching towards Virgil's now bleeding hands. 

“I know Logic,” Virgil snapped, pulling his hands away, “He’s gone, and-” Virgil cut himself off. “It’s my fault”. he raked his fingers through his purple bangs in panic.

Logan sighed, “that is unequivocally a falsehood. You and I both know there is-” he winced “was no changing Romans mind once he had an idea. If anything the blame is mine for not stopping Deceit fast enough.”

Virgil froze, “No. I know whose fault it is” he whispered.

“Come again?” Logan said in a concerned tone. “I have to go, thanks for the drink, sorry about the TV” Virgil called as he raced from the apartment.

“Come on, work with me” The vigilante whispered as he tinkered carefully with the security system to Deceit’s fortress. “There we go,” he sighed as the panel slid up. Virgil shimmied through the vents as quietly he could, following the map in his head to Deceits quarters.

If he was lucky Deceit would be asleep and the job would be over quickly. As he passed the lab, Deceit's nasally voice caught his attention, ah, not lucky. He really shouldn't be surprised at this point.

Virgil peeked through a slit in the vent watching the villain pace back and forth, apparently delivering some kind of monologue. Virgil had to fight the urge to laugh, villains practiced their monologues. He had to tell Logan. Not that the supervillain would be around long enough for it to matter but Virgil needed a laugh.

The vigilant began working on the screws in the corners of the vent. “My portal didn’t even lead anywhere. I knew that the Prince would just have to save everyone. And look what it got me!!!”

Virgil felt a sob building up in his chest, this bitch was going to pay. He relaxed his grip on the screwdriver, now bent into an odd shape. ‘One more to go Verge’ he thought, turning back out the villain as he ranted to an empty room.

Virgil carefully placed the metal door down next to the vent as he suck out. He was behind some kind of case, presumably to hold Deceit’s suit. The villain's monologue seemed to be directed at the suit, ‘pathetic’ Virgil though. Oh well, that would make the stealth mission harder, but Virgil really couldn't care less.

He prepared himself for his reveal when another voice filled his ears, a very familiar voice, “they’ll come for me” the voice protested angrily. “Oh honey,” Deceit said walking up to what Virgil now recognized as a torture table, “they all think you’re dead, No one is coming for you”.

Virgil stepped out of the shadows. He wordlessly sent two bullets into Deceit's skull and moved to unstrap Roman.

The Prince screamed as the shots rang out, but was soothed by Virgil's hands. “Verge” Roman gasped, “you’re alive, oh god you’re alive” was all the vigilant could say as he carefully undid Romans bindings.

The second Roman was free he collapsed into his boyfriend's arms, “I’m so sorry- I should have listened to you” Roman sobbed as Virgil held him. “Shhh, it's ok love. You’re ok” Virgil reassured. He threaded his fingers into Romans's hair, still trying to convince himself that this was real, Roman was real.

“I’m never letting go of you again” Virgil whispered tears running down his cheeks. Roman nodded pulling Virgil into a searing kiss, “I’m not going anywhere”.

Bro I've been obsessed with this concept for ages and I'd love to hear your take on it.

Victim Roman and U!Janus, with Janus being Roman's manipulative and toxic ex. But then also with Virgil being Roman's current boyfriend.

Ooooo I love some good Roman angst, so thank you for this

-When they first started dating, Thomas still didn't know about the "dark sides", so Janus suggested they should keep their relationship a secret. Roman agreed since the whole forbidden lovers thing seemed pretty romantic to him, even if he did want to be able to spend time with Janus in public

-At first, everything seemed perfect. Janus was caring and devoted and he always knew exactly what to say to make Roman feel better. Sure, he did always insist that they meet in his room and never came down to see Roman. And sure, Roman had to plan every single one of their dates since Janus never suggested anything first and yes, Roman was always the one getting presents for Janus and never the other way around. But that was all fine! After all, it was his job as the romantic side to do all of that. At least, that was what Janus always said

-Overall though, their relationship was fine. Except for the lying. Roman didn't mind it when it was small things and he didn't mind it when it was obvious that the other was lying. After all, what else could be expect from the deceitful side? No, the problem came in when Roman couldn't tell whether Janus was being honest or not. When he said things in a certain way that left Roman confused and laying awake in bed for hours trying to figure out what he had meant. Sometimes, it turned out he had been telling the truth. Other times, he'd been lying and Roman wouldn't find out till days or weeks later. And he couldn't just ask him either. If he ever tried, Janus would immediately get upset and accuse Roman of not trusting him. It was rare at first but then it began to happen more and more. Eventually it got to the point where he had trouble trusting anything Janus said, where every little compliment seemed backhanded and filled with unseen meaning.

-Janus broke up with him soon after this, saying that Roman was simply to suspicious and paranoid for their relationship to ever work

-Cut to a few years later when Ro and Virgil are together. Roman still hasn't told anyone about his and Janus's relationship, but he figures Virgil deserves to know so he tells him. Virgil's not sure how to feel about this at first. It isn't that he minds Roman having dated other people. It's that he knows what Janus can be like and he worried about what might have happened in that relationship. So asks Roman a bit about it, careful not to push too much.

-And as Roman reveals more and more he starts to get angry, because how dare Janus treat Roman like that. He tries to explain to Roman how abusive that relationship was and at first Roman refuses to believe him. Because he's the romantic side for gods sake, he knows what is and isn't a good relationship. Eventually though, he starts to realize Virgil is right

-When Janus reveals himself to Thomas, Roman isn't really sure how to handle it. He begins to doubt himself again, doubt if maybe Virgil's wrong and what happened before was his fault. Virgil comforts him after that first meeting, holding Roman as he just talks and cries about everything that happened. From then on, Virgil refuses to let Janus so much as look at Roman again, and if Roman does have to talk to him for some reason, Virgil makes sure he's by his side the entire time

Look I get the appeal of all the Dark Sides being like bffs until Virgil leaves and then Janus and Remus being the Chaotic Duo together afterwards, and I know that that is practically canon, (if you count the incorrect quotes video as canon) but consider this:

Janus has been manipulating them the entire time. From the start. Pulling strings and acting, as he does, to be their friend only to betray them the moment their partnership does not become useful. And he feels no remorse over it. Janus got what he wanted, who cares if he had to step on some others to get it? All that mattered in their relationship was Janus, and Virgil and Remus didn't even have a clue.

Not a theory, just an angsty headcanon my brain likes to torture me with
