U.C. Workers Strike on All 10 Campuses

The walkout involves nearly 48,000 unionized academic workers at the prestigious public university system.

Academic workers from four different bargaining units at the University of California are taking part in the largest strike in the U.S. since 2019 and the largest strike in U.S. higher education ever! On day 2 of the strike, the UCs have continued to refuse to bargain in good faith--TAs have not bargained since last Wednesday.

If you live near a UC campus, show your support by joining us on the picket line! If not, consider donating to the strike fund or signing a letter of solidarity to UC President Michael Drake.

so glad that instead of actually negotiating, our provost is busy writing indignant letters to the editor of the LA Times chastising the editorial board for expressing support for our strike and explaining that the university’s generous offer is $24k to $30k a year for graduate teaching assistants:

It feels like every elected California representative in the State and US legislature has come out in support of WORKERS ON STRIKE AT UC, and yet the UC is like "fuck you, take your crumbs. We don't take cost of living into account settings wages."

Every other labor federation and trade union in the state is respecting our picket line and supporting us, but UC is like "you are just children throwing a tantrum in a grocery store" (actual quote from a chancellor!)

Our Secretary of State has come out in support of us!

And! The UC! is THREATENING US ILLEGALLY and then crying to the LA Times that they are *being soooooo legal and nice why won't these ungrateful graduate students stfu*

What will it take?!

One day more. One day more.

If you have friends who are current undergrads at UC, make them ask their professors why they aren't supporting their TAs.

If you live near a UC, bring a food delivery one day.

If you live in state, sign the letter and write your own: https://www.fairucnow.org/support/

If you're outside California but in the US, write a letter to your local newspaper editor in support of university researchers and TAs and adjuncts getting paid a living wage!

Just FYI: 48,000 grad students, post-doctoral fellows, and academic researchers across the 10 UC campuses are currently on strike for fair bargaining practices, marking the largest academic strike in history.

This strike is incredibly important for setting a precedent. I have seen first hand how overworked and underfunded my colleagues are; they are the backbone of the university and the academic system as a whole. They deserve better, and I am in full support of their efforts

My alma mater UC Berkeley beat Stanford in the Big Game today, but I wanted to give a shout out to the Stanford Band for supporting UAW in their strike to earn a fair wage for grad. student workers and researchers throughout the UC system. I stand behind the UAW and wish them the very best, so it's nice to see support from whoever is willing to show it, including our historical rivals!

Striking University of California workers – 48,000 strong — rallied throughout the state on Monday, Nov. 28.

Workers are demanding higher wages, improved parental leave and childcare support, reduced housing costs, and support for international scholars. The strikers are “graduate student workers,” who work for extremely low wages and provide important services for corporations and the general public.
