Underhunt was an au I came up based on the idea of humans hunting monsters. In this au, humans had found a way to prevent monsters from turning to dust and thus made it possible to collect their "pelts" or some other grisly trophy from a monster that had fallen down. And because of this, half of the monster population have to live as their ancestors had. And those who lived a more natural life surprising cherish and enjoy it. And because of the hunters and poachers, the underground is actually experiencing a decline in the monster population, with some "breeds" facing functional extinction. Also in this au, animals have souls. But they are not as strong as human souls and somewhat hard for monsters to absorb other than being consumed as tiny fragments in the meat of the animals they hunt for food. There are rumors of animal soul fragments found in pelts that affects the monsters' behavior, but they have been dismissed as superstitious tribal beliefs. And because humans want to hunt monsters, there is no barrier in this au. But monsters can still absorb human souls and become powerful. But many fear this may make hunters more eager to hunt them down as many would rather hunt a much more dangerous creature than a normal monster. And because using magic can be exhausting for monsters, they prefer to use enchanted weapons and tools and only use magic in case of extreme emergencies. Healing minor wounds and illness is used with herbs and medicinal supplies. However, serious injuries that requires healing magic is used and performed slowly. And because of this, it's not uncommon to see monsters with scars that had not healed properly.
