Philo’s questions for me:

1. What would you love to do in your summer holidays/ break? If money were no object, go spend it on the coast in Portugal. On a more “realistic life goals” level, :) start running again. 

2. Favourite film genre? Hmm, as a genre probably sci-fi -- there are few sci-fi movies that I won’t watch at least once, and some of my overall favourites (Sunshine, Pacific Rim) are in that genre. 

3. Do you enjoy long train/ bus/ flight/ car journeys and why (not)? If I’m travelling alone, yes -- it’s like a bubble of time when you don’t really need to deal with any of the normal shit and stress in life, you can just read magazines and, on planes at least, have free wine brought to you. WHAT MORE CAN ONE ASK OF LIFE REALLY. However if I’m travelling with my kid -- no. For probably obvious reasons. :)

4. Are you the kind of person that saves money or do you tend to spend it quickly? Spend it quickly.

5. What is your favourite book (series)? I guess all-time probably Harry Potter, but last year I mainlined all of the Outlander series in a few weeks and really liked them for the most part. 

6. Last time you cried? Couple weeks ago, from general life stress. If we’re talking full-out prolonged cry-my-face-off sobbing, couple of months ago when I watched Swan Song for the first time.

7. Tell me about your best/ longest friend. I met markofcainn​ about ... ten years ago? (help me T) at the coffee + donut place where we both worked. At the time our age difference was pretty huge but we got along really well anyway. Kept in touch intermittently most of the time since,but about a year ago we were living in the same city again for awhile and reconnected. She INTRODUCED ME TO SPN (!! let’s take a moment, that one is important) and I can talk to her about literally anything which is a) completely unprecedented b) fucking awesome.

8. Do you have any tattoos or piercings or would you like any? Have one tattoo (tiny one on my foot, of my siblings’ initials); would like more but haven’t got around to it.

9. Best childhood memory? Christmas mornings probably. My parents were (in retrospect, I didn’t realise it at the time) very very very poor, but they made Christmas absolute magic. 

10. Does your family have any “traditions” (like Christmas or birthdays)? The regular stuff (for where we lived) for Xmas, tree and presents and visiting family. For birthdays we did ‘unbirthday gifts’ where the birthday kid gave little presents to the other kids. 

11. Do you believe in fate and why (not)? No. There’s a part of me that would like to. But I can’t accept that some of the things I’ve seen were fated to be; and I think it undercuts the significance and function of human decision (either as something you exercise *or* as something you have to endure the effects of).

If you could relive one moment of your life, what would it be? 3. You can make everyone you know read one book. What is it? 4. Last time you laughed till you cried, and what was it about? 5. How do you relax when you’re really stressed out/anxious? 6. You can play any extra or guest role in a TV series. Which series/episode/character? (I have some guesses as to what might be the most popular ones here ...:) but also, you know, surprise me! either way) 7. What is a ‘local delicacy’ where you live? 8. Where are you in birth order of siblings, and do you feel like you fit the stereotype for that role? 9. Can you do any stupid human tricks? 10. Do you have a favourite poem and if so what is it? 11. Most ridiculous outfit you ever wore as a kid? :)

Why Sam? Because he is a believer.

Because he thinks he’s faulty and he constantly struggles to overcome what he sees as a “disease pumping through his veins.” And in that struggle he has become a hero. But he still thinks, in a little corner of his mind, that he is predestined to be a villain.

Because he sees past himself and thinks that helping others is more natural than breathing. And he will continue to save them even when he is well past the point where he himself could be saved in return.

Because of the dream he had left behind to be with his brother and to live his brother’s life. (And because he is only occasionally grumpy about itJ). Because he wanted the white picket fence; he wanted Jess, kids and dogs; he wanted suits, commuting, organic lunches and family dinners; he wanted Christmas and Thanksgiving, and going to sleep sure that he’d wake up to see his loved ones alive and well; but he left it all behind for the cause.

Because of all the mistakes he’s made. Because his intentions behind those mistakes were always honest and good. Because he can be naive and vulnerable just like any of us. Because he can be used, taken advantage of, because he can be hurt.

Because he said “I’m sorry” million of times, and he meant it every single time.

Because he has darkness inside him, like a wild animal, caged, but dangerous, and sometimes that darkness breaks free, no matter how he tries to rein it in.

Because he could have chosen the easy path – the path of gold and power – he could have become the Boy King, he could master skills the demon’s blood gave him, he could crush and kill with single thought, but instead he stands there, in the background, patiently and quietly taking the pain and the blame.

Because of his smile and his eyes.

Because even now he can see the light.

Because he is a believer.

That is why Sam.
