Chapter 2: Don't Walk Into The Path of A Bat
They always say that babies will drive you to your limits... that almost never happened with Marinette. If she was hungry she would make a specific sound to get someones attention, and would point to her mouth with either a smile or giggle. If she went to the bathroom she would make a tuuu tuuuu kind of sound, if it was number 1 one tuu of it was number 2 two tuuus, and then they would change her diaper. The few times they ever see Marinette get upset or scared is with complete strangers giving her attention, it was weird, say a young mother to a nice grandfather she would be complete sunshine, but then there were some people Marinette would just stair at, and would start to tear up if they got to close. The other time would be if they were watching the news and they showed an image of a big-time villian. The worst reaction she had, was when an emergency broadcast informed the public that there was a bomb planted by the Joker somewhere near the center of the city, and when the Joker gave out his hint Marinette would start to cry and try to hide behind someone, but if she wasn't able to, she would grab her pacifier and chuck it at the screen, it never went far but they got the massage and would turn the TV off. Harley now assumes that it's in her blood to hate clowns.
The only villian that she doesn't react badly to is the Riddler, whenever he broadcasted his riddle Marinette would perk up a bit, and when he finished saying his riddle she would always look over to one of her moms or her aunt and just make baby sounds, it confused them at first, but she kept pointing at the screen and would smile as she talked her baby talk, they even recorded it a few times. So when Ed came over and saw this tiny baby in a highchair make eye contact with him and stop eating suddenly, he was a little weirded out. When she was done eating she was always given crans and paper, she would draw animals and things, and when Ed said jokingly "Riddle me this baby" he was expecting her to just not understand... the answer was a cat, so she drew a cat, and probably so he would know she is a smart baby, also drew a green question mark next to the cat, and smiled while giving it to Ed.
"... How the hell did your DNA contribute to this smart ass baby Quinn, Ivy I can understand, but you?" - Ed
"I have a PhD mother quacker!" - Harley
"Did- did you just child proof a curse word?! WHO ARE YOU?!?" - Ed
That made Marinette laugh, even though she was only 4 months old at the time, she could kind of understand them, she didn't get the sounds they made, but the colorful stuff around them seemed to show what they were thinking or feeling, of course only baby Marinette knew this, she thought it was normal, and that's why she never made unnecessary sounds, she thought they could see it too, considering she got what she needed, so it stuck. When she was 7 months old Ed had come over bringing puzzles for her to solve, and she enjoyed them, when there was one that confused her she would look over to her Uncle Ed and point to what she didn't understand, he would show her how it was done (and the colorful stuff also helped in understanding his weird sounds) sometimes she would just stick to the artful puzzles, but she also liked the small different colored cubes she got, and would finish them before Ed left.
"Again, how are you two related Quinn?" - Ed
"I told you how it happened-" Harley was interrupted by what she would describe as the happiest thing to happen to her (other than Ivy).
"Kuwinn...Qwwwin... Qwiiiin... Qwinnie!... Quuuwiinn...Quuwinn... Qwinn!" - Marinette said while pointing at her mom.
"Awwwwwwww, my lil' Cupcake, yuh said my name... Take dat Edie!" - Harley said with a smile as she walked over to give Marinette a hug.
"Qwinn, mmmmaaahmmaah Qwinn." - Marinette said happily as she returned the hug as best she could.
"What did I miss- Harley? Why are you crying?" - Ivy said walking over to her
"Cupcake called me Mama Quinn, I'm so happy Ivy." - Harley said looking at Ivy with a giant smile.
"I missed it?! Wheres the camera?!" - Ivy looking around for one of the cameras they strategically place around the hideout.
"I've got it!" - Selina came in with a camera and pressed record.
"Ok suguh, can yuh say it one mawh time please?" - Harley said as she held Marinette in a way so that the camera could see her face.
"Mmmmaaahmmaah Qwinn... annn mmmmaaahmmaah Ivieee, ann mmmmaaahmmaah kittennn, annn Unqwel Edee." - Marinette said their names as she pointed to them. She could tell it made them happy by the color around them, which in turn made her very happy.
(Harley may at some point have gotten Marinette to say Bwat Man instead of Bat Man for a awhile, but sadly she learned it was Bat Man. She was happy though that anything that seemed Joker-like, she said "Quack Head Clown")
When she was two years old that's when it got just a tad harder... if her awakening her plant powers were anything to go by. Everyone was at the breakfast table, Marinette between her moms, and her aunt in front of her. They were talking about the sky, and what Marinette thought, how she slept and then they get a weird answer.
"Well, I woke up last night with mama Ivys' plants blooming around my bed, they even sang me back to sleep." - Marinette didn't think it was weird, after all she always saw her mom talking to the plants, and she could too, as well as see their mood.
"Marinette, can you try to make this seed grow?" - Ivy then handed her a tiny seed.
"Okay." - Marinette held the seed gently in her palms, she closed her palms and imagined it was growing, when she opened her palms again, it had grown a stem, and they could see it continue to grow as a flower bud slowly bloomed... she had successfully grown her first plant. Ivy put the flower in Marinetts' hair with a happy smile, and they took a picture to remember her first plant.
When she was 5 she was already really good with plants, just like her mama. She also started to take an interest in gymnastics, she's seen her mom do cartwheels before, and she's seen the cool flips she uses in her fighting style. Again back to the dinner table.
"Mama HQ, do you think I can learn gymnastics?" - Marinette then looked at her mom with those big adorable vibrant light blue eyes, giving her the kitten look, just like Selina taught her.
"Are yuh sure yuh wanna do gymnastics suguh?" - Harley was a bit surprised she wanted to learn gymnastics in all honesty, but was also very happy she wanted to.
"Yes, I want to do cool tricks like you do when fighting, but without the fighting part" - Marinette was given a hug by her moms, and they agreed that she can learn gymnastics, as long as she doesn't do anything stupid... She pouted her lips, but agreed to their terms.
So Marinette is now 8, she is just as fun and whacky to be around as Harley, but also level headed like Ivy, and learned how to be aloof (and be a master at misdirection/slight of hand), and could put on a pretty good pokerface.
During one of her nightly runs she ran into a boy with green skin, she was wearing her silver and dark blue jacket, similar to her mama Harleys' but Silver and blue, with slight green accents on the sleeves going to her shoulder, and on her shoes. She wore a Black domino mask that had the same green accents along the bottom rim, with the top part of her mask being dark blue. Along the back of her jacket right where the two colors met, there was a heart in the center, half opposite to the color it was on.
"And who might you be, a new villian?" - Green boy
"Uhhhh..." - Crud, Marinette hadn't thought of a name for herself...
"I'll take that as a yes, I'm Beastboy, and I'll be taking you in." - Ok so now she knows his name, and he's running right for her.
Beastboy then turned into a frickin' tiger and leaped at her... now she had a few options, 1. She gives up (nope, she ain't a quitter) 2. She beats him and runs, or 3. she uses the plants that are in the roof garden 2 feet away, effectively tieing him up, and then she can talk... ok plan 3 it is.
She reach out her left hand in the direction of the plants, as she did a quick movement to the right with her hand the plants followed, and entangled Beastboy.
"Look, I'm not a villian ok? I just like free running across the roofs at night, without getting jumped by someone. Also my name's Wonder Quinn, nice to meetcha." - She said with a bright smile that surprised Beastboy for a moment.
"How do I know I can trust you..." - Beastboy
"If you promise not to beastout on me, I'll let you go ok?" - Marinette
"You promise...?" - Beastboy squinting his eyes at the girl.
"Promise." - Once Beastboy nodded to their little agreement, she stepped back a bit and slowly put the plants back to where they were. When she looked back Beastboy was staring at her, obviously trying to figure something out.
"So... Are you a night time person, or a daytime person?" - Marinette asked sitting down to show that she wouldn't attack (still close to the plants just in case though)
"... I'm a little bit of both actually, you a night time girl?" - Beastboy said sitting down himself with a smile.
"Yup, it's nicer at this time... sooo any reason why you were out here Mr. Beastboy?" - Marinette asked looking at his energy, he was still on edge, but wasn't going to attack unless she did something.
"Same as you I guess, just free running." - Beastboy
When Beastboy was about to ask another question Marinettes' phone went off.
"Sorry I really gotta take this... Hello... I'm fine... easy, pizza all the way... okay, Love ya, bye." - Marinette then hung up her phone and slowly got up
"What was that about?" - Beastboy asked while getting up, slightly suspicious he thought.
"It was my care taker, and they just wanted to check up on me, and let me know that I need to get back." - Marinette then dusted off her costume starting to leave.
"Maybe I'll see you around again." - Marinette then jumped off the roof and when Beastboy looked she was gone.
"... welp, time for pizza." - Beastboy then theft the roof, now in search for pizza
and that was how they met, they kept running into each other during their night runs, he would battle her, she would win, and they became best buds in costume.
Marinette was always homeschooled, so aside from Beastboy, Frank the plant was her other friend, that she had semi-normal conversation with. When she turned 9 Harley gave her a custom hammer, and she was allowed to join them on some of their environment trips, which you can imagine the horror that would strike into the people that went to work on the wrong day.
(Allow me to paint a picture of her first official family trip.) ehem:
It's a peaceful day, the workers are on break in the cafeteria room, calm music playing in the background.... when all of a sudden vines tair open a giant hole in the wall, revealing the full Siren crew (+ a child they have never seen before... guess who?) They start to tair the place apart, but since Marinette is there, they try not to kill anyone (if a piece of roof or something fell on someone due to a “miscalculation” Marinette didn't need to know...)
During the fight one of the more muscular workers tried to attack Marinette... he didn't get close before she called for a vine that rapped around his legs, holding him upsidedown in mid air.
"Riddle me this, how many lumps does an environment killer get?" - Marinette readying her hammer
"I-I don't know!" - Worker
"... Can't you try? I mean that's one of the simplest riddles I made, come on!" - She then knocked the guy out (not enough for severe brain damage don't worry) and regrouped to her moms, the rest of the workers were close to poopin their pants, because out of nowhere The Gotham Sirens show up, AND they have a mini version of them personified into a little girl, that also likes riddles! They blew up the chemical part of that facility after they moved the people out, which confused a lot of the workers, since normaly their severed limbs would be hyena chow by now... some still pooped their pants, and Marinette went back home with her family, happy they got to spend time together (a little sorry for the workers though).
She would still go on family trips, but became more of a vigilante when she started fighting wannabe villians. She would sometimes team up with Beastboy if she ran into him during a chase, or stakeout.
After about a year something changed... as in a new Robin appeared. She didn't really care about it until something happened when she was with Beastboy.
"Ok, so no powers this time, just normal sparing right? No sweat." - Beastboy doing some stretching, before getting into a fighting position.
"Says the boy that hasn't won even with powers." - Wonder Quinn
"Yeah, but you used your powers so it doesn't count!" - Beastboy
"We'll see, on three. One." - Wonder Quinn
"Three!" - Both kids then went into action, it was always fun when they fought, it was a way to let Beastboy vent. Marinette won, thanks to some flips and tricks.
"... Again, I let you win that round." - Beastboy getting ready again.
"Oh, what a gentleman." - As they started to fight again, Beastboy heard the sound of a grapple in the distance, it had distracted him, and Marinette pinned him to the roof.
"Admit defeat boy of Beast, and you shall live." - Wonder Quinn said jokingly.
She then saw the panic in Beastboys' eyes when she said that, she thought it was funny, and then she felt something hit her side knocking her off of Beastboy. Looking back she saw Nightwing and the new Robin standing between her and her friend... and from the looks of it, Robin was the one that hit her... at least his sword was still sheathed.
"The hell was that for?!" - Wonder Quinn
The slight venom in her voice made Nightwing flinch, but no one except maybe Robin saw it.
"Guys it's cool I-" - Beastboy tried to explain, but was cut off by Robin speaking.
"Was losing the fight, honesty why didn't you use your powers. You would have won against this villian if you did." - Robin said unsheathing his sword.
Marinette saw the change in mood for Beastboy...‘Oh well now I wanna beat the sh-t outta Robin.’ Marinette weighed her options... She wasn't supposed to fight any of the Bat Birds, but before she could speak Robin charged her readying a strike with his sword. She dodged it with little effort, ignoring the slight sting of pain in her side, and just kept dodging. She managed to find a pipe just lying on the roof, when Robin took another swing, she went into a roll grabbing the thin pipe and holding it now for defense only. She saw Beastboy trying to talk to Nightwing out of the corner of her, eye, his quick look of shock and then worry as he looked over at her, was just enough of a distraction for Robin to cut her cheek.
‘F-ck it.’ Marinette then switched to attack mode, Robin wasn't expecting that and jumped back only for her to be once again taking the swings. After she knocked his sword out of his hands she swept his feet out from under him, and bolted off the roof, giving a quick wave to Beastboy as she jumped off. She ducked and weaved in and out of alleys to lose them. After she was a good distance away, she went into an old abandoned house, she then changed out of her costume, grabbing the bag she hid under the floor boards with her normal clothes. She then carefully made her way out, and back onto the streets like nothing happened. As she was waiting to cross the road she just barely saw Nightwing and Robin running in the direction she just came from. She of course told her moms what happened when she got back, they already knew she hung out with Beastboy... Ivy was applying medicine to her cut when Selina walked in.
"Kitten, how did you get that cut on your cheek?" - Selina walking in with a bag full of jewels
"... The new Robin. Honesty he's a jerk! He didn't ask questions, just attacked, who does that?!" - Marinette now with a light blue band-aid on her left cheek
"There there Kitten, most boys are like that." - Selina put her bag down and went to give Marinette a hug, only for her to wince in slight pain.
"Suguh, show me your side." - Harley then saw as Marinette pulled up the side of her shirt a big bruise starting to form.
"De mudder f-ckuh hitcha wit' his swoid, does he have a death wish I can grant?!" - Harley ready to grab her bat, causing Marinette to kind of worry for Robin
"Harls we can't kill Robin......" - Ivy said, which was a slight relief for Marinette
"But we can scare the sh-t out of him." - Ivy getting ready to go out.
"I'm in." - Selina grabbing a giant bag
"But you're in a pot." - Selina
"I'm with y'all in spirit." - Frank
"Can we maybe tawhture him Ives?" - Harley grabbing rope
"Nonononono!" - Marinette
And that's how she met Robin, after a few days of not going out, she was able to see Beastboy again, he explained that Robin was his sometimes teammate, and that he was sorry he couldn't help.
They sat on the edge of the roof, and after they talked it out Wonder Quinn heard Beastboys' stomach grumble.
"Guess I gotta go, need to feed the pit." - Beastboy said getting up from the ledge
"My moms are ordering pizza, want to join us?" - Wonder Quinn said as she also got up
"Yeah, they also want to talk to you, soooo." - Wonder Quinn pulled out her phone and sent a quick text, before putting it back.
"As long as there's pizza." - Beastboy
Marinettes' family was there, and when she went to change into her normal clothes, that's when they all questioned Beastboy, and gave him permission to be friends with Marinette. They may have also said that if he rats out her identity, his team would be down a member.
She learned that Beastboys' name was Garfield Logan, and after that they were able to hang out both in and out of costume they became joint at the hip, always joking, playing pranks, and she even met one of his friends, Rachel Roth, she was quiet most of the time, but after awhile they started talking more and more, soon becoming friends.
They started to notice during some of their group outings that Marinette was being followed by two of the bats almost every other day.
"Soooo... what are your thoughts on bats Mari?" - Garfield hinting to the bats on the roofs
"... They help with the mosquito population, and their guano helps fertalize plants, so they're good for the environment." - Marinette
"I think he meant personal opinion, not statistical ones." - Rachel sipping her smoothie
"Umm, personally, they're okay I guess. Just not when they fly into you." - Marinette said which made Garfield spit out his drink as he started to laugh, getting a confused look from Rachel who was almost hit by his drink.
"Why is that so funny?" - Rachel looking at a dieing Garfield and the little mess he made
"Inside joke, when we were out on a roof, I walked into the path of a bat and it hit my face, one of its claw gave me a cut on my cheek. He wouldn't stop with the bat jokes for a week after that." - Marinette said before finishing her soda
"I'm so sorry you had to deal with that... his jokes can be really bad." - Rachel
"What kind of f-cking luck is that?" - Red Hood
"I don't know, Bats just wants us to see if she's the girl or not." - Nightwing
"But still, I have never run into a bat before... except B but that's-" - Red Hood
"... do you think she meant Demon Spawn." - Red Hood
"How should I know, she said it was an inside joke!" - Nightwing
After Garfield was done laughing, they went to the dog park.
"I still don't get how you ran into the path of a bat." - Rachel
"Right?!" - Red Hood on the roof
"Shhhh! I'm can't hear them!" - Nightwing next to Red Hood
"I don't know either- " Marinette was then hit in the side of her head by a robin.
"Hehehehe, birds of a feather-" - Garfield
"Don't finish that joke Gar." - Marinette rubbing her head.
They continued through the park, and Marinette, poor Marinette wasn't having a lucky day, she got pounced by a german shepherd, stepped in poop, and fell into the fountain after a dog chasing a cat made her trip.
"I think I'm jinxed." - Just as Marinette said that a black cat came up to her and sat on her slightly wet pants
"... it's a cat-tastrophe I tell you!" - Garfield
"... how have you not lost your sh-t yet?" - Rachel
"... I have no idea." - Marinette then started petting the cat as it purred.
…… On the roof across the park ……
"... ... ..." - Red Hood / Nightwing
"I believe the ‘she ran into the flight path of a bat’ now." - Nightwing
"There is no way in hell she's that unlucky!" - Red Hood
Just as he said that they heard laughing over their equipment, they looked through the binoculars, and saw a robin sitting on Marinettes' head, and a raven on her left shoulder.
"She's frigin cursed." - Red Hood
"... Lets go home." - Nightwing
But she wasn't really, as everyone thought of it as bad luck, really it was good luck, because after that the bat birds stoped following her, but she gained two new followers... the cat, and raven.
"Again, why are you wet, and have a cat and raven following you?" - Selina
She wasn't able to officially keep the cat or raven because of Bud and Lou, but they still came to visit her. They soon named the cat Merlin, and the raven, well Raven, Merlin was mostly fond of Marinette, while Raven liked Rachel.
A week before Marinette was to turn 10, she ran into Robin, this time with Red Hood. Beastboy was on a mission, so she was alone when they talked to her.
"Wonder Quinn right?" - Red Hood
Marinette nodded her head, not saying a word.
"You're under arrest." - Red Hood then pulled out some cuffs.
"And why am I bein' arrested Mistuh Red Helmet?" - Marinette talked like her mom, and in a slightly higher pich, so they wouldn't know her real voice.
"..." - Red Hood didn't think that far ahead
"An' what did I assault little bird, yuh pride?" - Marinette then crossed her arms
"Look we know who your working for ‘Wonder Quinn’." - Red Hood
"I doan wawhk fawh no one, maybe a tempawhary team up, but I wawhk fawh myself." - Marinette
"... Don't make this harder than it has to be, and we know that's not how you really talk." - Red Hood pulled out his gun with his free hand as Robin got into a fighting position.
Marinette was thankfully prepared
"Fiiiiiiine, since you asked nicely." - Marinette lifted her hands, and in one quick motion, she threw down a spore bomb that her and her mom came up with, it effectively blinds the target with a type of plant poison that only lasts for 5 to 10 minutes, but since she is immune to all poison, she has plenty of time to get away.
"Sorry about this, the poison'll wear off in about 8 minutes or so, have a nice day!" and with that they lost her. Some people on the street could see the blue cloud of spores on the roof, and most just ignored it.
Now all that was left to do, was go back home and relax...
"Riddle us this... why are the bats on a city wide search for you?" - Uncle Ed
