The Last of the Imaginative Dreams
With your best friends and mine, Greg Miller and Tim Gettys, off sharing the magic of Final Fantasy XV with everyone watching on Twitch (myself included) which is now over, but I swear was ongoing when this started. It seemed like a good time to talk a little bit about my favorite experiences with the Final Fantasy series. With Final Fantasy XV getting anime, movie, statues, and a free demo and all that, it’s crazy to look back and see this franchise as anything but the gargantuan emissary for almost all JRPGs.
Final Fantasy is, for anyone that plays video games, a household name. It’s a series that has lasted nearly as long as consoles themselves have existed. For me, like with many, my intro to the series came on the Super Nintendo. I was born in ‘93, as many of you may know, so I was way too young to get into FF2 & 3, as they were known here in the states. My older brothers, four and six years older them me, loved them though, so my exposure to them was pretty much since birth. I remember helping my brother Brady figure out how to do one of Bartz commands Sabin’s Blitzes in Final Fantasy 6, and my interest in the franchise was pretty much cemented from that point on.
Come Final Fantasy VII. I really wanted to get into it, but I was still too young. Lucky for me, my mom is pretty much the coolest person in the world. She held the controller and stood by my side as we played through the game all the way through together. I wrote a whole article about this experience, it’s one of my all time favorite gaming experiences of my life. Beating Sephiroth at the end was a so-happy-we’re-crying experience for us.
But outside of that, I’ve never actually been the guy to play all the FF games. I’ve picked up and put down every single release since VII, but none have stuck, save for Final Fantasy XIII. I adore XIII, because I know what it is: a very narrative driven, linear game. Sure, it’s very different than anything else that franchise has contributed, but it’s its own thing, and I actually really love that about he game. It’s unique, I enjoy the characters, and the arc is really cool. It’s essentially the Uncharted equivalent in that franchise.
I’ve also spent a considerable amount of time with Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy 8, both of which I’ve tried to pick up and play in recent years, but have yet to finish. FF8 is something I’ll probably continue to chip away at as this year goes by, but we’ll see how far I get into it. It’s definitely... interesting. It’s no VII, which to me still has some of the best combat and mechanics of any ATB JRPG.
But hey, Final Fantasy XV is coming out on September 30th of this year, and there is a demo coming out tonight that I’m sure I’ll have some thoughts and feelings about. I’m really looking forward to it, as the only hold over until Kingdom Hearts 3 never comes out. I’m excited, and I’m sure I can get into that on another day.
Happy Final Fantasy y’all.
Today’s musical writing playlist:
Kingdom Hearts music is so damn good!
No one could ever accuse of the uncovered FFXV event of being predictable
To start, the 3d amano work
Theme tune is a cover of Stand by me by Flozza and the machine.
The car radio plays FF classics.
There’s a free 5 part chocobros anime, part one available now.
And a feature length CG film.
Lena Headey, Sean Bean and Aaron Paul are in it.
Regis is Sean Bean. We all know what that means.
Both anime and film will be released before the game.
There’s also a special edition FFXV Audi. I want it.
The ingame mini game is a cross between pinball and an old school rpg. It will be available on windows, android and IOS, out before the game.
The demo is a surrealist standalone dream piece played as a young Noctis. There’s fireworks, a squeaky hammer, you can drive around in toy cars and tranform into monsters, and its available tomorrow.
There’s a fancy yacht.
The Regalia transforms into an airship.
Square Enix. They go big or go home. I love them.
