Don't fear 'em? You will not survive.
First off, I'm not subtle. Secondly, people who know me know I love to live my life as the underdog. There's something about being out-matched, out-classed, over my head, against the world that just works for me. Being the favorite? The sure thing? Gross city. You have to deal with the pressure of always having to be the best. And the margin for error is so slim it's maddening. And not for me. I've even been accused of purposely putting myself in a situation where I must be the underdog. I will not confirm nor deny these claims (I totally do).
But why not? The greatest universal sports moment of forever is the Miracle on Ice (don't agree? Come up with one better). And why? Because a literal group of non-professionals were playing over their heads and beat a power house. If Russia won, not one of us would differentiate the 1980's from any other (and Russia would have won the Cold War). This list, however, will not include Miracle. Or Rocky. Or Hoosiers. Not even Mighty Ducks (2).
Top 5 Non-Sports Underdog Films
5. Eight Mile - Now I hate Eminem (Juggalo for life). But the story of a trailer-trash loser who gets boo-ed the first time he steps into a rap battle for stage fright and turns to be a rap legendis epic. Of course, you need a bad guy - a group that called themselves Free World. They do all of the standard "evil people" things. They torment Jimmy, they have spies to find out all weaknesses for rap-exploitation later on, steals his girlfriend, and beats the crap out of him in front of his daughter. It all comes down to the final rap battle. He takes on the whole crew. When it comes time to the big bad, Jimmy addressed all of his flaws unashamed and points out that his rivals are wealthy and not the thugs they pass off as (i-rony). Left with nothing to say, the big bad is literally speechless and gets boo-ed off, losing their respect with them.
4. The Hudsucker Proxy -Coens take this story of a small town business graduate who is desperate for work (Tim Robins). When he starts in the mail room of a Hudsucker Industries, Hudsucker jumps out of his board room window and plumets. Evil Paul Newman decides to pull a The Producers-style scam and promises the board to make more money if the company goes under. So he hires inept Robins in the hopes to make the company belly-up. Well Robins invents the mother-f-ing hoola hoop (yeah, that one). And clearly since it's the second greatest thing in the history of things (more on that in a second), the company booms. Now that would be underdog-tastic enough. However, Paul Newman is ev-ul. So he builds Robins up and fills him with lies and then turns him into public enemy number 1. So once again, Robins is fighting for his job and then literally his life. Due to some fantastic and quite literal deus ex machina he learns that all of the shares of the company actually go to him. So he's able to rebuild his life... oh and then he invents the frisbee (clearly the greatest thing in the history of things). Suck on that Newman.
3. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Honestly, the book is better. But the story is what matters and this is a story about overcoming the odds takes place in young Francie Nolan rising above a harsh and poverished childhood in a tough neighborhood (Williamsburg - so rejoice hipsters, you're too ironic for poor people). She gets handed, literally, nothing. She loves the man who is ruining her life - her alcoholic father who is a singing waiter (a profession that unforeseeably died out). Francie grows up working her whole way. She takes college level courses but fails the college entrance exam. Even when she meets a handsome soldier, she learns he's actually getting married. But she never ever quits. Eventually gets into the University of Michigan, contemplates falling for her tutor - that's right, the book ends with her thinking about being with him. No Hollywood ending of the two of them running into each other's arms. She's so grown that she's just thinking it. The finale of the book is her reflecting on her life and how seemingly impossible it was for her and her family to become who they are now and not a degenerate waste like they so easily could have.
2. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington -THE essential little guy beats the big guy (or "David vs. Goliath" if you're not an infant like I am) tale. Story of Jefferson Smith being picked for a Senate seat by a corrupt political boss (it was a simpler time then) because he was so naive that manipulating him would be easy. So you'd think when he started to separate himself from those people are get more into the Washington scene, the corruption would just disappear (I mean, I'm sure you don't really think that, but you know what I'm saying). And I'm sure the media wouldn't rip him apart for being a simple guy (you get I'm just dumping sarcasm now, right?). But they didn't realize who they were messing with; this is Jimmy Stewart bitches. So when his park bill ruins afoul with the people who put him in power, the evil Senate, media, and political machine quickly move to paint Smith as the corrupt one; Smith launches into a filibuster to end all filibusters (ok, not as epic of a showdown as one would think... but still cool). Despite an onslaught of opposition, Smith keeps going. He's out to prove his innocence, the guilt of others, and to pass his Parks bill. He goes on so long and gains such a following that the evil Political Machine runner almost shoots himself in the face, but instead confesses that Smith is an all around great guy. Big win!
1. Swingers - Now I'm sure you're all saying "isn't this just a movie about guys trying to get laid?" And the answer is yes. But it's more than that (granted not by much). I could be lame and say it's the story of a guy overcoming himself. And since I cannot think of a less dramatic way to say it, I'm clearly sticking with that schlock line. But there closest thing to a bad guy is Mike's ex (who dumped him before the movie ever starts). There's no evil corporation, team, gang, empire, hell there's not even an evil parent keeping our hero down. It's simply Mike holding Mike back. Classic example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZChD_Gni8U . OOOF. That hurts. I still just skip that whole chapter. And there was no evil to vanquish. It was the story of a guy beating his own demons. This is the perfect character piece for the mid-Generation X/Y, me and my feelings-centered, slacker, over medicated world. The bad guy isn't anyone or thing. It's all us. Mike has to overcome his own fears, social hang-ups, and everything else about him that was holding him down. But by the end, he's all - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC8L1c6fCrI . If that's not a wake up call to everyone to get over oneself, I don't know what is.
