(Per the KJV Bible I was raised reading) Thomas was one of the 12 main followers of Jesus. When Jesus came back to life three days after being killed by crucifixion, most of his followers were just happy to see him but Thomas asked for proof that it really was Alive Jesus and not a ghost or another person pretending to be him. Jesus kinda rebuked Thomas for doubting, and showed Thomas the injuries he’d gotten during crucifixion, as proof.
The story is told and interpreted a lot of different ways, but one of the common ways that it was used in my life was to encourage unquestioning belief and unwavering, immediate obedience to the authority figures and their teachings.
“Doubting Thomas” was a sort of weak or villain character I was taught to not be like. Being called “A Doubting Thomas” was a rebuke, and made me feel ashamed. But, blind belief and obedience ended up causing a lot of pain and damage in my life because the authorities we followed and believed were abusive. So, today, I think it’s good to ask questions and to look for proof of things. And now I think of Doubting Thomas as a pal 😁 and that’s all the post was meant to convey: my new appreciation for Thomas and other people vilified for not following authority blindly (because, since leaving the way I was raised, I’m one of them.)
