they wake screaming. they wake with a sound ripping from their throat like a knife. like a blade slipped through their chest, through fabric and gustave remembers feeling it scrape against the metal of their heart, nicking and scratching at the gears and wires and maelle's face, maelle's face --

( they remember thinking oh, there's blood there. it shouldn't be there. the wide, whale-eyed terror on her face, her eyes so blue-grey in the overcast light. they remember wondering what was wrong, things were fine, the rock in their hands slipping from the grasp and landing in a wet plop in the ground. the crackle of lightning overhead. they remember, they remember -- )

they wake screaming, the word run on their lips ( blood coating their teeth, soaking their tongue, wet and terrified ) limbs flailing and untangling from sheets. they're wet, sweat-soaked and shaking, it's raining? no, can't be, they're inside. they're inside.

it's okay you're with me. a voice snaps at them, like a whip gustave turns, wild eyed towards the source and staring with a tremor wrecking their whole body, a hand to their chest as their heart struggles to keep up with the short breaths that don't reach their lungs fully. their fingers dance along the edges of chroma, blade half-formed and distorted like they can't fully hold the image of it.

"i'm --" it comes out choked, hoarse, their mouth is too wet and gustave gags even though it's tasteless and not the salt-iron of blood, the sensation is enough. their body crumbles against the wall on the far side of the room, limbs bending like paper under too much weight and curling inward to press so small against the wall. they don't know why they want to be small ( harder to find, because what if, panic stutters their chest ), head jerking to look back up at her with that terror again, seeing but not seeing.

"run, please." there's rain on their cheeks, their eyes sting, fingers pressing desperately to their chest as if it will hold in all the blood that's not gushing out of them.

thank YOU! i love perfume and creating scent associations for characters is sooooo fun imo.

i think sophie's perfume would have notes of: cashmere, soft ambers, flushed skin, linen, fresh air, and just a touuuch of lily or tuberose some other white floral that won't overpower the perfume but offer a cooler floral edge to the otherwise warm notes.

she really aspires to being a comforting pillar people can turn to and trust. in some ways--and this is a little poetically pretentious BUT--i think sophie is something of an open window in a home, she wants to offer a chance for people to sit by her and look at a familiar landscape and just feel comforted by the softness of the familiarity beyond, the same rooftops, the same people, the world still spinning beyond. but i didn't want it to only be warmth and fresh air in the perfume, i wanted there to be some floral element in it too because i think sophie would probably like having some sort of feminine touch to her perfume (not that florals are gendered but ykwim) and white florals just feel very 'her' to me

where did we go wrong ?

they're stalled on the street, petals swirling in the breeze. it's another year, another gommage, another expedition. gustave hadn't wanted to drag themself down here, emma certainly hadn't, not after sebastian gommaged a year prior. the knowledge that she'll be the surviving member of the lavalley family has pushed her further to encourage growth. gustave can't fault her for that.

gustave can't fault her for not wanting to come down, either. it feels stupid, parading around knowing they're not losing anyone. knowing this year, at least, they are safe from the gommage. next year, though... a rock pits their stomach, the blazing 34 in the sky like an omen.

one more year, huh.

gustave pauses, sophie's voice drawing them back, and they don't know why they're lingering. they've said hello, exchanged friendly conversation as they've done every year since parting ways. they look at her, fingers twirling a flower. ( they have nobody to give it to this year, but maybe they'll find someone. sebastian always made a point to do so. maybe gustave will carry it on. )

"i don't know...." they murmur softly, finally, setting the flower down with such gentleness. "we were good together, soph. i know it's... we're just wasting time, aren't we? staying apart?"

it lingers, that knowledge, a weight dragging at their heels. they both have one more full year left here, before the expedition.

"are you still considering..." gustave shifts, gestures with their hands towards the ocean like that explains it.

she's been sitting here for three hours. come to think of it, aisling can't be sure she actually moved any part of herself since sitting on the step. somehow, the necessity of planning the days to come outweighed the perfectly human nature to move. every so often, she'd feel her muscles tense at the conclusion of one thought, only for another to replace it. school events. PTA meetings. lunches. the diner. diner events. the portal. the company. fiachra. ballyanam. it piles up, and up, and up. it all needs solutions. and somehow... she'd rather sit here in the autumn chill and come up with the answers alone than burden another with the task.

she's just preparing to choose which company member to negotiate with, when a figure crosses her peripheral, and the comforting weight of a blanket drapes around her shoulders. she doesn't even flinch. only one person moves this way, thinks this way. her gaze lifts, a small, tired smile on her lips, and she holds out a fold of the blanket, inviting her to join her on the step. " i hadn't realized how late it was getting. have you eaten yet? there's enough pasta in there to feed a small nation, whatever i was thinking... "
