ok really excited for a new feature i’m adding to the cores—rumbles.
lemme explain. i’ve had this idea for months and im finally talking abt it, so stay w me for just a sec while i Dinosaur Nerd to walk you through my thought process (also take this explanation w a grain of salt bc i’m obviously not an expert, i just think dinosaurs are Neat)
so t. rex, like other dinosaurs, did not roar, because it did not have a larynx/voice box. and a lack of a larynx isn’t exactly a problem the cores have, but i bring t. rex up bc the scale of the animal is what got me thinking abt the cores. while t. rex didn’t have a larynx, we can gather from crocodiles that they likely could have made very low frequency sounds. now, there have been times where tigers, which have very low frequency rumbles, have caused their prey to literally be paralyzed in place bc of how low the frequency is and it makes them so physically terrified, they cannot will their bodies to move.
picture a 40ft t. rex. instead of announcing itself like in jurassic park, you would feel a t. rex before you saw it. you might not even hear it. can. you. IMAGINE how terrifying that is. within 2-3 miles, you know there is a t. rex but you can’t see it—and if it was Right There—the Effect that would have on you? TERRIFYING. here’s some examples of what we think it might’ve sounded like:
now,, take that 40 ft t. rex, and scale it up to a 100ft giant. picture that. low rumbles, carrying for miles and miles across wide, open wastelands; from a distance, you might not even notice it, but as you get closer, something just doesn’t sit right—you can’t put your finger on it, you just feel panic. unease. as you get even closer, you begin to notice your chest is vibrating. and then, standing before this already very physically intimidating giant, the ground, the objects around you—your entire body, shaking, and it dawns on you the giant is the source of the vibration. not their footsteps—them. they’re making sound. and it’s so intense, so low, your body is rooted right where you stand—you couldn’t move if you wanted, forced to take in the sight in front of you.
it’s just a great sense of scale in the gtms universe—the giants make t. rex noises. i love it. expect more posts abt it bc i’m obsessed
