TW: Angst (emotional whump kind of), reference to past attack
"Don't talk to me." August slammed the door as he re-entered the house.
"O-okay." Morgan flinched, staying out of August’s way as he went straight back to his room.
The house was dead silent.
Morgan went back to August's room. They knocked on the door quietly. "A-August..? I know you want to be alone... I-I'm sorry I upset you."
"I'm... I-I'm gonna go then I guess..." Morgan started back down the hall.
August's door opened. "Morgan."
Morgan turned back to August, hesitant.
"I... I'm sorry I snapped at you... I'm sorry I attacked you." August’s eyes were dull as he spoke. "... Please forgive me." Although his expression was carefully blank, his voice betrayed his regret for his actions.
August looked almost surprised.
"What? Did you expect me to say no?"
August shrugged. "Why not? It's not like I deserve for you to forgive me."
"If I only forgave people who deserve it, I wouldn't have any contact with my family." Morgan gave a small smile and took a step closer to August.
"You don't make any sense."
"You don't either. We're never going to understand eachother if we're scared to ask and be asked questions." Morgan watched August carefully to see his reaction, remembering his previous response. He didn't look upset this time, however.
"I can't answer all your questions." August crossed his arms, leaning against the doorframe.
"Why not?" It was a genuine question, not a challenge.
August hesitated for so long Morgan wasn't sure if he would answer even that question.
"... My life... My life is... not always easy to talk about."
"You've lived for a long time. I'd imagine not everything has been pleasant, but you shouldn't pretend that you can handle things on your own." Morgan sat on the ground.
"I'm not pretending. I can handle it alone."
"You're lying to yourself. You're closed off. You're angry. You look like you could snap at any moment— and you did a couple hours ago."
August was silent. "... I don't want help."
"I can't make you talk to me, but I do wish you'd let us be friends."
August looked at the ground. "Why..?"
"Why would you want to befriend me? Why do you keep trying to spend time with me? Why don't you hate me?"
"August..." Morgan stood back up, coming closer to him. "Why would I hate you? I want to hang out with you because I like you. You've also saved my life three times. I feel safe when you're around."
"I'm not a safe person! You should hate me— I'm— I've done terrible things— things I've never told anyone and will never tell anyone! I— I don't—"
Morgan hugged August, who trailed off and stopped talking.
August reluctantly returned the hug. "You don't know me... You don't know me at all... You—"
"August. Shut up." Morgan hugged them tighter. "Sometimes it's okay to just accept a hug. Does it even really matter why I like you or why I trust you? I just do. I think thats the most significant."
August didn't say anything, fighting back tears as they just accepted the embrace.
