One of my goals in doing this is to shine a spotlight on the Black community that's largely been pushed out of North and Northeast Portland. That hipster lounge where you're sipping craft cocktails was a successful community-based business for decades. The upscale grocery store and fancy condo building is on land that years ago was essentially taken from the heart of the Black Portland Community. . This month marks the 46th anniversary of the Upstairs Lounge arson massacre. A local gay bar in New Orleans was set on fire while it was packed with patrons celebrating #pride . 32 people died. Many bodies were unclaimed or unidentified because of the stigma of being gay or even socializing with gays. No one was ever arrested, years later many denied it even happened. It’s that time of the month again.... ART BATTLE shall commence tonight in the form of #firstfridayfaceoff Let the talent reign supreme within our walls. We strive to support the local art community through many different methods and one of the most unique ways is our series First Friday Face Off where two artists come together to paint live in the #upstairslounge with no prior knowledge of the theme and only four hours to do it!! What makes it even more interesting is the fact that YOU get to decide who wins the battle. It costs $5 to vote and voting begins at 6pm tonight and ends at 12pm tomorrow so don’t feel left out if you can’t make it this evening. Proceeds are split with the artists so they don’t go broke dueling over the chance to win a monthly gallery showing on our back wall. It’s a win win for everyone.
