ableism is my grandmother calling me lazy for not being willing to get up to go to the bathroom for the twentieth time in under half an hour, and constantly bringing up how i can’t be doing this when i get a job
context: i have urinary retention & some incontinence (the doctor claims i don’t have retention because i managed to empty when i was there, but i know that’s not right) and i almost constantly have to go to the bathroom.
this is really embarrassing to admit but when either wearing pads or using a washcloth i tend to… intentionally have accidents because i genuinely cannot be bothered to go to the bathroom after trip number 10. it causes me more fatigue and distress to keep going back.
and my grandma is insistent that i “never had this issue before” (i did. for 4 years) and claims that i’m just being lazy when she doesn’t understand firsthand how fucking nightmarish it is to do the same thing nonstop.
This is ableism.
Still pissed I broke my new years resolution to avoid the ER on day three because my catheter got blocked.
"you have to stay hydrated"
Why? Just to piss again? No seriously, i have urinary retention, i have to piss AGAIN? are you serious?
this body armor tastes great. So hydrating.
I have to piss again????
Again???
two days til the 1 year anniversary of when i went to the emergency room with horrific kidney pain concerned about some kind of organ rupture (bc eds) and they gave me some pain meds and did a ct of my kidneys and diagnosed me with muscle strain and sent me home. i was too tired and overwhelmed from past er visits finding nothing to even tell them about the gaping abcess on my port that was causing it to show thru my skin.
about 4 or 5 days later i was admitted to another hospital to get a week of antibiotics and a new central line and completely unable to urinate on my own, leaving me with a foley catheter. that kidney pain during was because my bladder was shutting down and i was in active severe retention and extremely close to having a bladder rupture. i nearly died 🤠
A catheter can affect you physically and mentally but there are some small things you can do to reduce possible complications and to still partake in life.
This looks like it would be a good read for someone fairly new to catheter use. Still, it doesn’t hurt to have a quick look even if you’ve been around the block on this; sometimes an article like this can help crystalize some mental frameworks or provide a little hack you hadn’t thought out.
This post is presumably written by someone with a vulva. For content notes, there’s one brief discussion of condom-like catheter options for penises that links genitalia with gender.
