This is weird to me. Traditional smokers didn’t “develop manners”, they were forced by public health legislation out of offices, bars, and restaurants and not without a fight. My mom had a friend who ranted frequently about anti-smoking measures, and her attitude was “if you don’t like it, leave, it’s a free country,” etc. Smokers just kind of lost that fight and smoking became largely seen as uncool in general.

Save Our Signs: Celebrate All-American History
As reported by NPR and 404 Media, the Trump Administration is encouraging people to report any National Park, Historic Monument, or other related signage that is in any way negative about US history, so that they can be targeted for removal. According to the executive order, removal must be completed by September 17.
Save Our Signs is encouraging people to take photos of current park signage and upload them for preservation.

I have a disease that, if left untreated, will lead to a slow and agonizing death. It will cause me to become progressively more disabled until I die. It will cause my every waking moment to be defined by pain.
And although there is no cure, there is a medication I can take that makes me mostly okay and mostly normal. Day-to-day, the things I experience that healthy people don't are mostly inconveniences as long as I don't overdo it. I'm able to live a relatively normal life, and all I have to do is take this medication.

note that I am talking about highways/interstates where a toll is charged in ALL LANES at ALL TIMES. I'm not asking about an extra lane that costs money to access (eg commuter lane). the fee may differ by day/time and/or type of vehicle, but a fee is charged to every vehicle that accesses the road. the road can charge tolls as you get on and off, or may charge tolls at points along the road, or both.

I know this is america-specific, but I made this is because I am interested in why my friend in pennsylvania uses "turnpike" and I from illinois use "tollway." where is the boundary between word usage? also, I only get so many poll options. if someone else makes a similar poll for other parts of the world, tag me/send it to me and I'll be excited to share it too!!!
Happy Labor Day! (US)
Today is Labor Day in the US, and far too many see it as just a nice day off for bar-b-ques and hanging out with family. While those are good ways to celebrate, it's also important to remember why we celebrate today.
Unions and the Labor movement are what brought us shorter work days and work weeks, better pay, better workplace safety, better treatment from employers, and so much more. Yet, the big bosses (the owners and folks in the Executive suites) generally have never liked Unions. They mainly like profits for themselves and care little about the workers that get them those profits.
When Regan took office, a lot of the regulations that governed businesses and banks were loosened. At the same time, we started seeing a lot of anti-union propaganda, weakening the idea that unions were useful and stating that the union managers were just seeking to profit off of dues without doing anything for them. Union busters have existed pretty much since unions starting being a thing, but given how much labor unions have declined in the past thirty+ years, it seems like they got a lot more effective in the 1980s. This has contributed to a large portion of the US forgetting entirely, if they ever knew in the first place, what this holiday is about.
