hey i wanna talk to you about my world building vocaloid & vocal synth headcanons today (threat). don’t expect any of this to make sense

i imagine that all vocal synths are idols or musicians of some kind. they’re like their own niche of performers within their universe like j-pop or k-pop idols and such are.

i also interpret vocal synths to be their own species: human-ish but not fully androids either. they‘re just their own thing and possess over non-human traits such as not aging, being presumably immortal and having magical powers (though that last part is still kind of ambiguous at this point). 

another notable thing about this species is that it’s manmade, and with that, the outlier among the usual species that exist within this universe such as humans, elves, vampires and different kinds of human & animal hybrids.

the vocal synths are "developed" by a company called "vocal center" which i imagine to have been founded by dr. dareka & nurse robot_type t (who, within this storyline, are not vocal synths themselves even though they like. actually are utaus in real life)

all vocal synths used to be of a usual species (usual species in this context equate to any species that *aren’t* vocal synths) and after getting accepted through passing a typical idol audition, they need to go through development which essentially means that they get put in a capsule. now, this sounds batshit (and it is) but this is kinda just common knowledge among the auditioners. it’s part of the grind if you will …

the development process doesn’t change the person in appearance besides a few small things. it mainly gives the idols their immortality, makes them unable to physically age beyond whatever age they are at that moment and gives them odd powers that are still being studied. well, and obviously the voice changes as well.

(this is what this wip i shared a while ago was about! and i still didn’t finish it…)

the process is a mix of technology and magic. the magic stems from a type of crystal called "sonarite" (or, sound stones), which are a magical kind of rock that have many mysterious legends attached to them. there is no one specific place where you can find them and when you hold them up to your ear, you can hear faint music and nature ambiance from them. these crystals are needed for the capsules to complete the process of development.

one strange ability vocal synths have is that they’re able to teleport to a parallel universe. it’s a very nature-y place with a town in the center where all the synths live. as of now, i call the world "synica", but this may be changed.

also, cause i didn’t know where to put this: my headcanon world is called "idol untold" and i tag it a lot on here, so that’s what that’s about :P

i‘ve daydreamed about this being a comic for a good while, but i have only so much clue about how the plot goes. i chose the name idol untold since it obviously features idols, music & performance and the untold part because i enjoy the idea of a theme of the story being to look at what the personal lives of the idols are like, how they got to their current points in life, what they feel about their career behind the scenes and the non-idol related parts of their lives. the "untold" parts, so to speak. it revolves a lot around the relationships and passions of everyone along with their journey finding what they truly are.

also! a note about the pictures of my black & white sketches i used: i drew these very quickly on my notes app and lost everything on the app a while back so i had saved them as pretty poor quality pictures. i used the ibispaint super resolution feature to make them look a bit clearer so they have this weird ai blur on them. i hope it doesn’t look too ugly ^^'

✦ UTAU & vocaloid drawings ✦

So a few days I wanted to draw more vocal synth fanart and ended up with this unhinged page XD.

First I drew a comic of Gumi coming home to her slacker roomates. Do I hc Gumi, Gakupo and Lily as all being romates in a crappy apartment cuz they're all from the same company? maybe... with that said Una and other internet co. synths live in different places.

Then I drew Lily and Ritsu interacting cuz I hc them as besties who are constantly being bitchy to each other. I like to think they started off on bad terms, because Ritsu bragged about being a better singer then Lily online (starting internet beef between the two) but then, circumstances lead to them interacting and learning they actually have a lot in common! So now they're friends and, hang out to go clothes shopping and shit talk everyone.

next I drew Ruko gambling (because that being a hobby of theirs is funny to me so of course I keep it for my hc's) and a Momo cuz she's great.

and lastly I drew Gakupo and Kaito messy making out and unfortunately making it Gumi's problem...

Also I know a few of these synths also have synth v vb's and Ritsu also has a deep vocal VB but calling this utau & vocaloid drawings was just easier for me :P

kasane teto headcanons since i have a very specific portrayal of her

for context, chimera (in the way im going for here) are a type of japanese demons that take a form similar to humans (with the exception of wings and a tail) and are known for their mischeviousness. teto is part chimera from her father's side.

teto x miku is used in here, and ted and teto are siblings, ted being the older one by 6 years.

UTAU Teto (15):

Sapphic. Likes girls. A lot.

She was a kid with an attitude and never smiled in photos if she was asked to, only if she wanted to. She also usually can’t look straight into a camera and looks away.

Teto developed a crush on Miku when she quietly sang for her for the first time, and was completely mesmerized by her voice. Miku was her inspiration to pursue singing.

Speaks English very, very badly and has an extremely strong Japanese accent. She usually has Miku translate things for her, but not even Miku is that great either.

Has a bit of a “chubby”/round face. Didn’t grow out of her baby-face.

Her hair naturally curled into a drill-like shape once she put her hair into ponytails, and now she chooses to exaggerate their shape by using a curling iron.

Despite not liking stereotypical pop music, she secretly likes girls who listen to it as she is into girly girls. (ahem, miku)

She doesn’t like to have her hair down, she’s embarrassed by how she looks with it and was forced by her parents to wear it down as a kid. 

Cusses a lot when comfortable to. She is often horrible with manners and being “proper”, unless in a traditional Japanese setting. Otherwise, she gives zero fucks.

She has one of the most impressive singing voices and very beautiful control over her pitch, but doesn't like to sing in front of people due to stage fright.

Avoids eye contact. A LOT.

Her birth certificate lists “Chimera” as a sex by mistake from the issuer, and she is actually female. She sometimes identifies with it to mess with people and make them confused/frustrated.

As full chimeras age slower, Teto is often called a “31 year-old” despite being alive only 15 years. This is not true, as she ages normally due to being half human, and mistaking her to be older makes her angry. Unfortunately, she’s often called 31, or a “held back student” by her classmates.

She camouflages her tail as a belt, but it is very much so a real tail. She hates it being touched. In general, Teto hides any of her chimera features as much as possible in fear of being seen as a monster. If comfortable, or angry enough, they tend to come out on accident.

Miku is the only outsider that has ever seen Teto's chimera form because she trusts her. (Miku thought her wings were the coolest thing ever!)

She believes she's extremely unlucky, considering she was born on April Fool's Day, and has had nothing really go right in her life, especially in regards to bullying as a kid.

Definitely has sharp teeth. Gotta tear into that bread somehow!

Used to pull on Ted's hair and scream at him when she was a kid. To this day, she doesn't know why. He has nicknamed her "demon" for a while because of this.

Ted is quite overprotective of Teto and encouraged her to try her best to sing, even if Teto's singing was... quite bad as a kid.

She and Miku split up when they were kids due to a major argument and didn't speak again until Teto saw Miku on social media performing on stage. This is what drove Teto to become an "Online Idol" on niconico to regain the attention of her and hopefully get back in contact with her. It was just Teto made it very obvious she was being a Miku ripoff (hence the outfit).

Family doesn't like singers. They encourage every member of the Kasane family to pursue an instrumentalist career, but they never made it big, and so they had to resort to the "shameful" career of making ramen. Teto is the only successful musician AND singer in the family.

Synthesizer V Teto (late 20s):

MUCH more mature. Rarely curses, and tries to stay mannerable and quiet. She also has better control of her chimera form.

Doesn't mean she won't be bratty or snooty at times. That's just Teto naturally.

Hair reddened with age as any older Teto iterations prior to SV had her with pink hair. It's a chimera trait to have red hair and red eyes.

Is the one that handles all of Miku's (30-ish, NT) events and concerts, and likes to make sure that she's not overworking herself.

Now underneath a professional talent agency, Teto left behind her "copping Miku's style" thing behind and now dresses in something more like her style. She likes the military-chic look a lot.

Her and Miku don't get much time to hang out anymore, but they still keep in contact despite their hectic music careers.

Her and Miku are a married couple. You know how celebrity marriages are, except this one has no drama and they aren't public about it.

Teto's English is much better now and she can hold a conversation. Her accent is still quite thick though.

Just an older, more mature version of UTAU Teto. (I'll make a seperate post for her because this is getting LONG.)

i feel like sukone tei and defoko are two sides of the same coin, as in, defoko could very easily become similar to tei under the right circumstances, and vise versa tho I think I might be a bit harder, they would never realise this how much they have in common because they hate eachother...most of the time anyways, and would never want to admit it willingly

with my vocal synth headcanons, I like to make redesigns of them & their original outfits (what I consider their on stage/performance outfits), but also give them a casual outfit to show what I imagine them to dress like on their own time. I do plan on shading these soon

continuing this headcanon series with more characters, this time with my four all time favorite vocal synths! these guys are essentially the face of everything i make, so it's probably good for my followers to know some of my headcanons on them. if you know these characters and have ever thought "why do they look like That" about any of my fanart of them, here is the explanation (⁠ ^▽^ ⁠)

as i've said here, dex's isn't done yet and will be redrawn and probably also slightly redesigned. i also want to draw sprites of my designs with their original outfits on (the designs that I currently only have as sprite edits), but i only have blake so far (which i shared on here before). if drawing unshaded full body transparent background drawings was a competition i would win

i don't know who needs this written out but with polycule i mean i enjoy all combinations of ships between these four except the siblings. just making sure i don't get accused of incest idk
