I’m still thinking about how multiple people in the notes of this one post on the lack of utopian literature definitively stated that 9/11 was a primary factor in the overall decline of utopian literature, and like, no? I can’t say it didn’t affect the production of utopias at all but the Cold War was, by all means, a much more significant factor. I’m like kinda deep into utopian studies at this point, and not a single theorist has mentioned 9/11, like at all. I’m fighting against the urge to go back and ask, source? How was that the conclusion multiple ppl came to? Is there some post online spreading misinformation about this?
This narrative does somewhat neatly shift the focus away from the explicit ties between Marxism/ radical leftist ideologies and Utopianism, and creates somewhat worrying implications abt either a utopian reading public (again, an ostensibly leftist public) or utopian writers in general (also a bunch of socialists/ anarchists) as if rising violent American nationalism, in particular, had something to do with the decline of Utopianism (that’s not say that American leftists can’t also be nationalists, or that anti-Utopianism can’t arise out of nationalism. I would just not say that it was primarily anti-Utopianist sentiments that consequently rose out of the aftermath of 9/11, but Islamophobia). This maybe reminds me not to put too much faith in generalized statements abt somewhat niche areas of study on here. Stay safe out there

anyway remember when mutantkind was almost entirely wiped off the map and the x-men established their own nation and invited all remaining mutants there as a safe haven and it was all kind of thrown together last minute but it was still kind of hopeful and then the avengers literally just destroyed it all
the x-men: nowhere is safe for us anymore so we're making our own island. we'll be free from oppression, persecution, violence, and having our basic human rights taken away. everything on the mainland is structured to hurt us, so this has to be a safe place for all of mutantkind.
the avengers: what was that?? did you say you wanted us to invade your island to kidnap one of your kids??? yeah we can do that
