why do so many YA novels feel compelled to add some hetero romantic subplot when it doesn’t have to be there? ugh. i’m not against romance, like at all, but if you’re going to write a romance have it mean something. give the characters actual chemistry, have their interactions be engaging and fun even when it isn’t a romantic scene, make we want to read about the two of them engaging, have the romance change something, whether it’s advancing the plot or a character arc. if it’s not doing any of those things, then why is it there.

#i swear to god #i didn't even hate the idea of the two characters in the book i'm talking abt #but like #it didn't have to be there...#it felt kind of out of nowhere tbh #at least from the pov of one of the characters #and it didn't add anything to the plot #other than 'oh i guess they're in love now'#like UGH #uuuuugggghhhhhhhhh #idk man #idk #if it had been more gradual and the two of them were actually like #particularly fun to read about together #then that'd be one thing #but they're? not?#it would have been better if they'd just stayed friends and the romance in the final 3rd of the book was replaced with them growing closer #as friends #and coming to understand each other #and then the following books in the series explored a romance #that would have been much better??#but idk the half-assed romance cheapened the growing understanding between them #in my opinion #lmao
