Out of all the coincidences, breaking into a hydra facility the same day someone else had was possibly one of the last things she had expected, but Jemma had quickly decided to throw away her plans in favor of just winging it and steal back the dangerous artifact. She could have fought the old fashioned way, safer for her, but when she walked into a larger hall she found many, many agents attacking one person, she could easily guess it was either some SHIELD person attacking Hydra or a victim and there were too many to fight with a regular weapon. Either way, Jemma snapped her gloved fingers to get a flame and blasted the Hydra agents she could see far from her. Now what? She was no Daisy, she wasn’t equipped for interactions like this. “I’m not going to hurt you.” Jemma lifted her hands in surrender, except it was likely not very reassuring considering what she had just done. “I’m assuming you aren’t about to pull a hell Hydra.” Either that or he really didn’t get along with his coworkers.

“Dark is what Fitz’s life is going to be when we come back, if he doesn’t change attitude. He’s on thin ice. And so is Mack. If he so much gives me a wrong look I might decide to do some opening up without waiting for him to be dead.” Mack obviously judged her for not telling the truth sooner despite being mad at Fitz for not telling her about Skye’s secret, as if the problem wasn’t why Fitz hadn’t told her anything. Whatever. She’s mad at almost all of them. “And I cannot believe there isn’t any beer in this safehouse. What are we, muppets? Good Lord.”

Jemma doesn't go after Skye right away; there is too much still unknown, so first she asks May about Lady Sif and the Kree, the details of it, and it gives a whole different meaning to everything that has happened to her in the past couple of months. It also means she has to tell the rest of the team because they are right, they are owed that. Even though she didn't say it because she was looking for a cure, doesn't know most of them, and thought she was affected by a temporary alien mutation that wasn't infectious at least until Raina showed up like that and Trip was-well, anyway. But she didn't hide it from Fitz because she thought Fitz would hurt her and that is something she'll deal with later. For now she only wants to talk to Skye.

So she goes to the Bus, the old cage. She wonders if Skye feels as horrible as she does, her skin constantly tingling and her lungs burning. And why is it that Skye can cause earthquakes and she can feels so aware of the air around her, causes wind? Sitting down in front of her, she shows Skye her tablet. There are three files in it, three different DNAs shown there, one with the label 'Skye' and last year's date, and two clearly showing macromolecoles and other not-human components. "This is yours, the real one, from last week," she murmurs, pointing at one of them. Then she points at the very similar one next to it, "... this is mine."

She opens her arms to invite Skye to a hug, feeling truly light and genuinely amused for the first time there in Afterlife, giving a smacking kiss to her kiss. “Now, I know it’s not like snogging a pretty girl or boy, but...”

Jemma sniffs, finishing to re-bandage her hand and wiping her eyes with her other wrist after she hears someone arrives. Could be anyone, but the fact that a moment later she sees it’s Cisco is both a relief and an embarrassment. Had it been someone she had known less, she might have freaked out, so this is an improvement, but at the same time she doesn’t want him to see her acting all pathetic because of a stupid injury. And trauma, she admits at least in her head.

“I’m sorry I messed with your lab... I didn’t mean to, I’ll... I’ll clean it up.” Her ‘new’ DNA is still in the computer’s screen, but the rest of the lab has been hit with one strong gust of wind because of her, while she was trying to come up with artificial ways to help herself deal with the change. If he snaps at her, she’s going to cry more. “... I’m really sorry.”

After a first small attempt to be normal when reunited with Fitz, Jemma had found any possible excuse to stay away from him and everyone else while furiously researching a way to fix herself. She couldn’t just tell Coulson she was the Hydra weapon - not until she figured out a way to end this. It wasn’t that different from the Chitauri virus, really, if there was no solution but death, she had to know before the others so they wouldn’t waste time. She was hurting Fitz, she was hurting everyone by keeping distance without explanation, but she was terrified out of her mind, especially when she had the chance to see her own blood samples. Not a virus now, but a mutation. And of the worst kind.

So when the inevitable fight breaks, because she ends up alone with Fitz in the quinjet during a mission and her hurry to leave it looks bad enough that he comments on it and she tries to tell him it’s not because of him, Jemma is at her limit. “That’s not why I left! And I’m not avoiding you because you have-because you are-” the things he said are just reminding her of how much she ruined his life, even more so now that she knows he believed she had left because of his brain damage. She made it worse by being there and by not being there, and the reason she can’t find the right word to use is not because she can’t bring herself to face reality but because she can feel the way the air around her is changing, the way it’s not going into her lungs the way it should, and she gasps. And then she gaps again and again, quick erratic gasps from the lack of oxygen instead of longer panicked breaths, her hand going to her throat, “Oh God... no...” she rasps out, throwing herself towards the button that will open the quinjet so she can run out, even if the team hasn’t finished fighting the Hydra agents yet. But what if she sucks the air out of the quinjet and chokes Fitz again? Or sets things on fire again? It hurts, the inability to breathe in, nothing is filling her lungs as her biometric watch beeps constantly - so much for giving her a warning.
