The fact that the agent sitting next to her holds her down right before the car crash tells her he’s Roxxon too. He comes out to speak to the others while she’s recovering from the shock, and she feels she’s bleeding from somewhere because a window shattered on her but she’s fine, her brain desperately trying to find a way out. And then in a split second of hope she shouldn’t have, she empties her gun, puts the bullets in her pocket, whispers “May, stay down, attack when Fitz is out of the line of fire”, and slips out so she might be able to keep the situation under control. Fitz and Bobbi were in the car behind them and are approaching, more Roxxon people are there too, and Jemma aims her weapon at Fitz’s face. Bobbi can handle the others; she has to make sure Fitz doesn’t get hurt. 

“You are forcing my hand here, Fitzy. Did you really think I’d just walk back in a cell like a good girl, without having at the very least a gun pointed at my head every second of the journey there? Or did you think I’d care too much for you to hurt you?” her tone is mocking as she walks closer, and she can tell Bobbi would shoot her if she could. But the other Roxxon people distract the woman, instruct her to just leave, they aren’t going to kill them if they don’t have to - of course not, her mother might need them alive.

The mission is over, and Jemma is looking for Fitz; they made it, full success, but she also thought he was dead for a minute there before hearing his voice, a minute that felt like a year, and she has to see him.  And when she does, he’s smiling like the sun, her amazing, brilliant, sweet, awkward, handsome Fitz, and she’s grinning right back as she runs in, throws her arms around his neck, and without thinking kisses him right on the lips - he’s right there, and she never wants to be without him, so her body acts without prompting.

Being back at the base is weird and terrifying, she doesn’t know what the others think now that they know her assignment was really her being undercover in Hydra for months. But she also asked about Fitz and the others and Coulson said he was fine, so maybe keeping distance from her at an important time worked and she won’t ever have to leave again.  She doesn’t know what to say to Fitz about the other thing between them, but she can’t wait to see him. Jemma pictured it many times, tried to prepare what words to say, how to behave - long hugs are for tearful reunions, but arm squeeze? Keeping distance and waving? Quick hug? - but nothing has really prepared her for the way it feels to actually see him in the lab, approaching after she shows up with Morse, and she breaks into a wide smile, because there he is - and oh, he’s handsome - and for a second she forgets everything she did to him, everything she couldn’t do, and just hurries her steps to throw her arms around him into a hug, a rarer happy one if congratulations aren’t in order, and it’s warm and heartfelt and what she needed the most. “Hi.”

It’s breaking her heart to just think about it, she doesn’t know how she’ll get through this without crying her eyes out. But the girls think Fitz should know and, well, Fitz also thinks people should know when they are involved in something. To think that his mother has always been so welcoming. But then, there is also a reason why he never met her parents, hopefully never will. Fitz himself might just have been the first serious crack in their relationship, when she put her foot down and said no to them without backing down nor apologizing for it.  “Your mum is always so nice...” she starts, not sure of how to explain that hers is not, it’s not just because of him. Jemma sits up straighter on the bed, hand still over his arm, “Fitz... I have to tell you... that my parents aren’t like that and... I don’t think I’m going to tell them we are dating. Or anything else, really, but especially nothing about you.”

She has poured sparkly water for the both of them, his hand has been a bit less cooperative that day - while he has been able to deal better with words, it’s depends on the day, really, this process, and when Jemma looks at Fitz, who is looking at the clock, with the team there, she thinks of what Skye said. That maybe Fitz isn’t just nervous for obvious reasons, maybe he’s more nervous because he wonders what she’s thinking and if she’s less present because of him, because he’s not as helpful at the lab; Skye doesn’t know about his confession at the bottom of the ocean, but she might be onto something. He doesn’t know how she feels and if his brain damage even changed anything.“Come here,” she tells Fitz, to take him away from the break room and into the corridor, even if he’s clearly looking back at their friends there, because it’s almost Midnight. And then she says “I’m going to kiss you after the countdown, if that’s okay with you.” And that really does get his attention solely on her, and on the fact that she’s so bloody nervous, but also hopeful, “I really-I’d like that, if you... if you are okay with that, of course, I... I know we have a lot to talk about too, but that-that probably kind of sums it up. What I want to say.” The ten, nine, eight-starts, the new guy’s voice, Hunter, maybe loudest, and Fitz steps closer, which in turn makes Jemma break into a relieved smile, and step closer, her hands going to his face, seven, six, five, four, “Hi”, she says for no discernible reason, and three, two, she closes distance between them and kisses Fitz.It’s slow and innocent at first, but then she gets lost in it and her hands are stroking his hair, brushing his cheeks, her kiss deeper and not stopping just yet until she really has to. “Happy...” she interrupts herself to give him another quick kiss and smile “Happy New Year.”

“Her family was too powerful even for SHIELD, there was too much at stake. Her mother has a tendency to target children. And the loved ones of everyone who gets involved.” She hears Coulson’s voice before she has the energy to open her eyes, and makes sure they stay closed for now, “So Jemma had two options. Actually surrender or pretend she did to gather as much information as possible to take them down. If she said a word to you, she wouldn’t only risk your wellbeing but your mother’s. And she’d lose her chance to get closer to her mother, and find out her weaknesses. Literally: her mother has an implant in her body that allows her to detonate bombs all over the planet if she were to die. Daisy is working on it as we speak. She also has Jemma’s little sister. Well, had. May is taking care of that. Her sister, who was in her mother’s hands, and you were always her priority, Fitz. I’m sure she’ll be able to explain this better, just make sure you don’t discuss any of this outside of this room. If we are being watched, even our facial expressions count, we all have to at as if Jemma is still a traitor.” The amounts of Jemma tell her that Coulson is also freaked out, probably because now that she’s in the hospital bed it’s more obvious that she went through experiments of all sorts. Her prosthetic arm is missing, so is her eye, and a scar on her chest says that surgery might have happened there as well. But... if he’s telling Fitz all of this, it must truly be almost over. May has Cat, Daisy almost has her mother’s failsafe, and then they’ll strike. 

She opens her eye when she hears Coulson leave, turning her head slightly in Fitz’s direction. She doesn’t say it’s fine, because it’s not, she hurt him too much. But for once she also doesn’t try to push him away. “I had to protect you and your mum... like you always protected me, Fitz,” she murmurs, her good hand brushing against his fingers, “You are... you are the reason I started feeling like  real person after I left home. You are the reason I didn’t turn in some kind of monster before. You always reminded me that-that people can be good, that there is so much worth hoping for. Life wouldn’t make sense if I didn’t keep you safe. I wouldn’t even have... have had the strength of fighting, of keep fighting, if I hadn’t known you. It’s important that you know that. Because everything good in my life came from you.”
