[moire’s grand haul at the end of her search includes misha’s box of poems (acquired by full-body tackling a sophomore in the middle of picking it up), and the soft bag of bo’s baby teeth. the small box of silver and misha’s sketches is still nowhere to be found, and remains in one of the holes when it gets filled the next morning. several things happen:

@gyeolsim misha’s healing magic is temporarily reversed. any bruise moire touches gets transferred to her instead. 

@kilnkin @noahruskin @pear-otter the next few times someone says something unkind about aud, ai, or noah, they’ll be pelted by nearby items. these can include pens, tarot decks, and small lizards. 

@sorcieresque @partmetal-alchemist there’s now half an inch of saltwater in daisy and thiren’s room. it won’t leak out through the floorboards or when the door is opened.]

“Thank you,” says Val, though she doesn’t know to which books Aud’s mother refers. “I like your daughter,” she giggles, “most of the time.”

“No, she wouldn’t’ve,” says Mac, with a smile. Though Aud and her mother are extremely strange, they’re closer to his realm of understanding than most of the creatures here. “I’m, uh - not exactly like your mama here. Like Val said,” he shrugged, “not the witch. I’m an accountant, actually.”

After a hissed conversation (What did she say? She said she likes me. Yes, Aud, but what did she really say–), Aud turns her attention back to Mac. “That’s cool,” she says, though it pretty clearly isn’t. “Where are you staying? Assuming you didn’t bring your whole house with you.”

Her mother ignores Aud’s pointed tone, and the conversation she’s trying to stumble her way through. “Is this the one you cut open, too?” she asks in Russian, nodding at Val. “If they trust you with a knife, Aud, you’re doing something wrong.” She squints, amends. “Or they’re very, very stupid.”

“Mama–”

“Played doctor,” Yuliya announces, pointing between Aud and Val. She mimes slicing across her stomach with one sharp nail. She smiles, like she’s just being polite, rather than trying to stir up something painful.

Aud rubs at her eye, already exhausted. “Bad phrasing.”

val's genuinely been mothering her younger cousins As Long As She Can Remember cuz auntie was genuinely a wreck of anger and depression in like a very postpartum way (despite not actually giving birth but just like. the Ascending to motherhood concept) for quite a few years after she became auntie. the caution and the self-sacrificing tendency to always feel like she has to be a Safety Net is obvs a big factor in val's personality (this one's sad wtf mbad)

arash can handle nine out of his ten parents, but he really really really misses being rashni’s brother instead of some kind of surrogate son. she’s at such a different stage in her life now -- mid-career, high-powered, fiance he hates, the awkwardness and anxiety of adolescence/college far behind her, grief over his disappearance processed and reopened now that he’s back -- that finding new common ground has been a rocky path. they bonded a little at family week, but something still feels off; arash realizes that he’s still never asked about the aftermath of his disappearance, and is going to broach it over the summer.

Shuqi purses her lips and shrugs. “Not smart enough to pass the gaokao,” she mutters, as Lil Bean sniffs around Mac’s feet and sneezes at his knees.

"Uhh..." William looks over his shoulder, calling, "Carolyn, do you know a Tara?" The other spirit furrows their brow. "Sounds familiar... Oh! Yes, Christine's co-parent. I haven't seen her in a while. So sorry." Meanwhile, William is chasing around and baby-talking to Lil Bean.

While Shuqi’s having the epiphany of her fucking life Lil Bean is basking in the attention. When he sees the spirits he points like a hunting dog, but gives up when he sees that his owner doesn’t seem to care. He’s elderly but still willing to indulge baby talk.

"Oh, sick," Aud says, overhearing the question. She hasn't seen Tara around lately, but waves to Shuqi on her way past. "Hey, in-law!"

(Oh, she thinks distantly, so that’s the mother. Huh. Kind of young-looking, but then again so’s Tara.)

Shuqi takes off after Aud, leaving Lil Bean behind to emit a geriatric wheeze of contentment. 

“Girl! Hey girl, what’s your name ah? I’m Shuqi, don’t be afraid, last time I used to take care of Su--Tara. Has she been responsible to you?”

yeah but theres definitely a certain degree of anger that wasnt there with the rest of us. im sensing some pent up aggression. im sure my colleague, dr leblanc, could contribute some valuable insight.

“HI,” bellows Val, when she spots Thiren with her mother, then she starts to run over, but forces herself to slow down so Mac can keep up. Val is excited to meet all of her classmates’ family; she considers it a WEBly duty. “Hi,” she says to Skye breathlessly, offering her hand. “Ha-ha, my name’s Val, I was Thiren’s WEB Mentor,” she says, then she grins and asks, “Are you her sister?”

thiren rolls her eyes, but skye laughs warmly as she clasps the offered hand with a firm shake. “flattery will get you everywhere, dear. i am skye, thiren’s mother. she has told me a little about you. you help all the new students, she says. i am impressed, it sounds like a lot of work to do at the same time as schooling.” her voice is pleasant, a jumble of accents trapped in smooth molasses. “who is this with you? thiren did not mention a wheelchair friend.”
