Designing "Better Than Us"
Greetings, children of the night! Since the release of Vampire Therapist: Couples Therapy, we've been hard at work on our new revealed project, Better Than Us.
Better Than Us is a social stealth game where you'll spin a web of lies to infiltrate parties full of the wealthiest and worst people on earth. Set in the year 2200, long after the dark powers of extractive capitalism have taken their toll on the planet, you'll play a clever, charming thief with no respect for the "great" minds who have taken over the world with new extractive technology and artificial intelligence.
And trust us: these are villains as complicated as the ones you've come to expect from Little Bat Games. Watching a few people with comically outsized wealth seize control led us to explore times in history where wealth inequality was as extreme as it is now, and what we discovered were some terrifying stories of political, spiritual, and business leaders doing very bad things.
Better Than Us is a tale for our delicate time in human history, so we reached out to academics from top universities to help us untangle complex threads of influence, power, and dirty deeds going back hundreds of years. As with Vampire Therapist, we get a lot of excitement out of discovering that the stories we think are brand new have been told numerous times before. History shows us what's happened: it's up to us to decide if we're going to repeat it.
We took our design inspiration from hyper-luxury hotels in OPEC countries, resplendent with gold and pearl and cobalt blue (cobalt being a precious metal these days), and after studying long-term climate theory, we decided to take them out to sea (that's where some theorists say we'll end up when the waters rise). It helped us land on a unique aesthetic of absurd opulence and to find the comedy in extreme wealth.
This was our first concept of the big reception room where you'll start probing your mega-billionaire targets.
We found video guides like this one instrumental in our design for all the right/wrong reasons! Over the next few months, we'll be revealing more about the cast of characters drawn from history that you'll be interacting with. Yes, Better Than Us is a sci-fi game set in the future, but if we've learned anything from our work on Vampire Therapist, it's that it isn't just war that never changes — it's people, too.
And don't worry, Vampire Therapist fans... we've got a returning character in Isabella d'Este, and you'll get to meet her naughty little boy, Federico!

I've been working with Little Bat Games on their new game: Vampire Therapist! It's a visual novel style game where you give therapy to vampires and hang out in a goth themed nightclub.
