Beforan Karkat invented “Vantas” as a last name. He refused to show his hue, but he needed something to put on the paperwork if he was going to keep flying under the radar.

Kankri was given the last name “Vantas” when he was hatched, whether by jade record keepers or Feferi directly noticing the connection. Kankri knows very little about his ancestor, and that’s intentional. Beforan Karkat’s mutation was outed posthumously, against his will, and Kankri is a little mad that he knows even that much, because it compromises Karkat’s agency. He never thinks to drop the name, though, it just doesn’t occur to him.

Few people knew the Signless’s true name, many presuming quite reasonably that he had none. For years, I tended to write him as only going by “Kankri,” and either adopting Maryam as his last name or using no last name. There had to be a reason for that few people to know his hatchname, and I figured it was for safety, that knowing it meant that you had attained such a level of trust within the movement that it could serve as almost a password.

But if there was one name that the Signless stole from the universe before to be his, and I do like that headcanon, it’s way reasonable that the name he would See Kankri called all the time was

And the name and the shackles both become incredibly well-hidden, Sufferist cues that mean “help this person if you find them.”

Aight, so we know Signless is Troll Jesus, right? Jesus died and arose three days later. So technically that means Signless would have done the same, right?

Does... does that make him a rainbow drinker? I mean, the Vantases are all blood players, so... it would make sense, in a way
