Kali: the goddess of time loops ⏳🌀(butterfly and spider symbolism)
One of the main points about Kali is not a secret for the most of us: that she is a Hindu goddess, which is beautifully shown in her very first shots, having the goddess picture on the wall behind her.
But what I personally find fascinating about El and Kali as Brenner’s numbers is that, while 11 is apparently duplication, 8 is literally —
This is just our Kali, from the show, having a hint at being connected to time loops. While Kali the Goddess literally can impact time. That is, it’s being backed up from the both sides, stressed.
Although in the show she’s been presented as the one capable of mind fucking playing, it turns out that the visual presentation of her power also has a time shenanigans reference aka the butterfly effect (screens from the post by @lilialunaa):
(Mind you, that Kali’s episode right away starts with Terry, being stuck in her dream (time?) loop.)
As for the imaginative part, that has also not come out from nowhere, but from Indiana Jones, being emphasised in 5x08 epilogue, hinting that this is exactly what happens at the end.
More on that in this post by @chromatictapestryperdition
The show introduces us to Kali by her time-loop name (8) and present her having a power of mind manipulation. Mythological Kali is a time goddess. Indiana Jones suggests the mind playing part. From the game the butterfly effect is taken, representing time once again, which in the show is depicted like an example of mind playing.
🦋 My question is: can the ability of manipulating minds and the ability of manipulating time be just one power with the common ground?
Bc in a way, affecting time also kinda changes the picture? and vice versa: showing a butterfly doesn’t exactly mean that time didn’t change at that exact moment, you could just miss it.
Which, of course, would bring us to Vecna (even without obvious visual references already in s2) as we know him as the exact person playing with minds. Is his technique different from Kali’s? Or is it the same one? Or is it the same bc Kali doesn’t (fully) exist or is Vecna? And why does Kali have different powers, not like El (if it is true) does?
We’ve never really seen powers of Kali and Henry being compared, but are they that different? Are butterflies different from a grandfather clock in the tree trunk? What about spiders?
Ah yeah. What about them?
Isn’t it interesting that aside from the charged meaning of a butterfly 🦋 that Kali shows us, another symbolical illusion that we see as soon as we meet Kali (the very first scene with her!) is also connected to Vecna? 🕷️
But moreover, it is also connected to mythology.
Illusions, interconnectedness of the universe, the cycles of the material world?
And finally, here’s a meaning of Kali’s last name
which kinda gives me hope that she indeed will address her mythological roots of being a protector, and will eventually represent herself as a gift from God, if we/the party are lucky enough.
PS. Leaving, don’t forget that butterflies have not just one meaning (illusion or the butterfly effect), but both, probably being the one. The show has this symbol here and there, and reading it from both points of view can be really helpful. 🦋🕷️
